a epic back stab on the soshi  9 bond or Was Jessica demanding too much? 

 

The Golden era

The year is 2014, SNSD are the undisputed  girls on top.

Still the reigning  number 1  Korean girl group, while successfully completing their 3rd Japanese tour.  

SNSD was the golden standard of korean girl group with their popularity with the public and massive album sales.

 

Sones proudly boasted about the Soshi bond, and the eternal 9.

 

The Bomb drops:

September 29 2014 Jessica drops a bomb on her weibo account

 

Then the following reply by the account was added to the post.

 

People through it might of been a hacker especially since all 9 had  renewed their contracts in the previous month

But as more hours ticked by with no statement form SM, and only 8 snsd members arriving to china for the fan meet. The silence was deafening

it became clear quickly that  Jessica had beat SM and anyone else to the punch to reveal she was no longer a snsd member. Sending sones and general kpop fans to a melt down trying to work out why they kicked her out. What about the bond of 9!

 

SM version of events:

 30th September, SM Entertainment made an official statement regarding Jessica′s leave from the K-Pop idol girl group:

We are offering our position on the words posted on Jessica's Weibo today.

This coming spring, due to her personal situation, she notified us she will halt her team promotions with the release of one [more] album.

Despite Jessica's sudden notice, the agency and the Girls' Generation members tried our best and tried to figure out a way that Girls' Generation's activities can continue in the best possible direction.

However, in the midst of insufficient negotiations regarding conflicts of differences in priorities and interest, Jessica started her fashion business. Due to this, despite ongoing talks, it has come to a point where the team could not be maintained.

Thus, the agency had no choice but to pull up Girls' Generation's activities as 8 members earlier than planned, and in the midst of while working out when to announce this, Jessica had posted her words early this morning.

From here on, our agency will continue to support and manage the 8-member Girls' Generation and Jessica's individual activities."

According to SM, Jessica requested to leave SNSD after 1 more album, which was agreed by the company and the other 8 girls.

However after  "negotiations regarding conflicts of differences in priorities and interest Jessica started her fashion business" and the 9 remembered snsd team could not been maintained. Most fans interpret this as Jessica not being able to commit to her snsd schedule due to  her fashion brand. Hence why SM decided to make Jessica leave SNSD now instead of later but still manage her solo activities. 

However this explanation did not sit well with many.

Counter Arguments : Why could Yoona/siwon  go do a few dramas and still be part of their groups but Jessica cant have her own time to for her business?Especially if its just for 1 more album. SM did not refute that Jessica was forced out, just that she was going to leave SNSD  anyway.

 

The Tyler Kwon rumour.

Around this mess, articles and rumors begin to fly that Jessica is dating Tyler Kwon, and was due to the married the following year.

even thought its not what SM ever said,  articles with "insiders" claimed  this was  the reason why Jessica is leaving. source.

It is also revealed that Tyler is a  major financial supporter of Jessica blanc. They were spotted by dispatch  on the same plane leaving new york on the 29th sept.

Korean Public opinion shifted to Claims that the  real reason Jessica left snsd was so she could get married and start the  blanc and eclare  business.

While it was later confirmed they were dating, and lasted a few years,  the couple never married

 

Jessica version of events

After SM statement, Jessica released an update to the media in the form of a letter which read:

I was given a notice of departure from Girls' Generation by the agency on September 29, and I cannot hide my shocked and upset heart about this, so I'm here to reveal my position.

I have always put Girls' Generation's activities before my business or personal life as a member of Girls' Generation. However, despite my efforts for the team, I have been asked to leave the team by the agency.

While I was planning my business that I've had a lot of interest in since before, I had sufficiently consulted SM as well as the members about my preparation many times and asked for their understanding.

Up until the beginning of August when I was launching 'BLANC', I had received agreement and permission from SM, and congratulations from the members as well.

However, in early September, after only a month since the launching, the members suddenly changed their position and held a meeting, and told me to either quit my business or leave Girls' Generation without any justifiable reason.�

I explained that I had already received permission from the agency, that I had never neglected Girls' Generation's activities, and that I could not suddenly halt my business due to my contract with my business partner after a month.�

Ultimately, I pleaded that it was unjust for me to have to make a choice. Becoming a Girls' Generation member was the best thing in my life, and I had never thought about quitting.

Shocked about this, I had met with the agency CEO on September 16 to convey my position, and once again confirmed their permission for carrying out my business.

However, on September 29, I was given a one-sided notice asking me to leave Girls' Generation. Due to this, I was also unable to attend the fan meeting in China on September 30, and I have also been excluded from following Girls' Generation activities.

I have received great pain and cannot hide my sadness that I was asked by the agency and fellow members, whom I've spent 15 years with putting in all my passion and effort, to leave Girls' Generation just because of the reason that I'm starting a business.

I also want to apologize for causing concern to all the fans. Please understand that this situation is not at all what I had wanted, and that I've always treasured Girls' Generation, and that I will continue to do so. Thank you for always supporting and loving me.

Jessica points:

- From the start She had permission from SM to make the business and the initial approval from the other members when she launched  blanc and eclare.

- always put SNSD activities above all else and never thought about quitting.(no clear examples of her missing any SNSD activities)

- It was fellow SNSD members who changed their minds and suddenly  gave her an ultimatum to either quit SNSD or stop her business (which she couldn't stop due to contracts etc)

-After confrontation with members, SM confirmed with Jessica that she had  permission to continue with the business.

- on the 29th sept, she was given notice to leave snsd affecting immediately starting with the Chinese fan event the next day.

- after giving 15 years of her life to snsd (training included) to be kicked out just because she started a business, is extremely upsetting. 

Conclusion: she heavily implies that it was fellow SNSD members not SM, who had an issue with Jessica owning a business since she stresses twice SM had no issue with it. Jessica makes it clear it was not entirely company decision. She posted on weibo the same day she got told, so it was a raw emotional reaction her initial post.There seems to have been a disagreement for a while between Jessica and the other SNSD members but she was harshly told  she was out of the group when she though SM was initially on her side.(IMO). 

 

Theories:

Why did SNSD members object to Jessica  blanc and eclare?

From Sm and Jessica statements, Initially SM and the members did not object to it and tried to comprise.

At some point the SNSD members  changed their mind/ or the comprise did not work.

 

Theory 1# Money

One of the first speculation was that the other members clothing endorsements were possibly at risk or SM could not make any money from  blanc and eclare.

Something no one thought about until Jessica actively started building her company. 

Counter argument: Other SM artist and idols have fashion brands . Donghae has a  streetwear fashion brand, Tempus. Tempus is co-owned by Donghae and his older brother, Donghwa. Donghae is often spotted wearing Tempus outfits on Super Junior’s VLive show, “SJ Returns,” and also gifts Tempus clothing to the other members of Super Junior. source

This makes it unlikely it was due to money.

 

 

Theory 2: Commitment to SNSD

SM had said that a "differences in priorities and interest" between jesscia and the other members.

Heavily implying her new business was interfering with her snsd activites. SM had also said that Jessica has requested to leave after 1 album.

Theory: SNSD memeber did not agree with Jessica making the planning of the group activites more complicated by starting a business now instead of waiting untill she was done with SNSD after the next comeback. SM probably works out their schedule months in advance, And when they were planning their next comeback there was a clash. So they were already frustrated/mad at her. The theory goes that instead of dealing with the disagreements and future clashing of schedules  , the other SNSD members thought it was best for Jessica to leave now as she was going to leave anyway. No point in dragging things out.

Jessica has  said after the initial approval from SM,   she already made commitment  to her business she could not stop. what those commitments were and how it could affect snsd promoting/activites were never made clear. But building and designing a fashion brand takes time.

 

Counter arguments: if Yoona could have acting gigs, why couldnt there been some flexibility for Jessica. Especially since it was allegedly her last album.

It seems very harsh and Cold to kick her because the SNSD members were unwilling to be flexible for 1 comeback. Unless Jessica Changed her mind on leaving altogether. Which is possible. Other Idols such as Gdragon and Donghae have fashion brands, but other people run them (g dragons stylist, donghae brother).

I wasn't into kpop yet when this happened so it was a very interesting read! I knew some bits but definitely missed important details.

I don't know SNSD's members much so I don't have any theory to come up with. But it's pretty weird that the other members all had a meeting without her knowing, discussing her departure. And how much power the members held to get her fired that easily from the group while she was still under contract and SM agreed with the brand and the 1 more album terms?

Is widely speculated that if Jessica  had not spilled the beans on her getting kicked out, she would of  gotten the suju Kibum. where SM and member would say Jessica is still part of the group but never promote with them again. Jessica would still be under contract and SM would of let her presume her Fashion brand and do a few cfs here and there. Idol leaves groups all the time in similar hiatus fashion.

 

And i speculate SM always atleast want TTS and Yoona to be with SM for a long time. So keeping most SNSD members happy made them more likely to reign again. Which 5 of them did.

I think some SNSD members just were not that close to her in the end.It rumored Taeyeon had a bad relationship with Jessica due to fancam speculation

this still hurts me to this day. they were my favorite group. i remember being so upset over jessica leaving and idk which side to believe. the fact that most of them still pretend jessica never existed in their lives even though they spent years training and debuting together.... this is why i still have trust issues to groups who seem close but actually aren't

Kpop world imploded that day haha. I was a hardcore MaoMao back then, it was a horrible situation. We suffered a lot, for real. 

I don´t know, i still believe Jessica, but i don´t have angry feelings for the other girls anymore. There are some things we would never know or understand about their dynamics and relationship, so i just moved on like an adult. lol If anything today as we speak i enjoy the drama of it all as i´m not emotionally invested anymore.

not a stan, but like most kpop fans i casually followed snsd and bop to many of their songs. they were legends.

till this day i will always hate the final decision was to kick jessica out.

it literally ruined the whole soshi bond and snsd image in general for me.

It’s true that Taryeon and Jessica started to have a sour relationship around 2010, and there are several fancams that prove Taeyeon outright ignored Jessica outside of any profesional interactions...buuuuut if you decide to trust the fancams, then it can’t all be one sided. There are also fancams during 2014 were Jessica nd Taeyeon are shown to be huddling together and joking around, signaling that at least they were on the mend.

It’s also worth noting that the 2010 fight wasn’t only between those two, it involved all 9 members as for a while, you could see they broke off into cliques (Taeyeon, Tiffany and Sunny/Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung, while Seohyun and Yoona stuck to Jessica, but didn’t seem to choose between one of the other two groups either). This beef apparently lasted for a good while, and Taeyeon and Jessica seemed to hold grudges from then on, at least Jessica did try to make an effort towards Taeyeon, only to be coldly ignored.

One thing is clear, whether she had her rightful reasons or not Taeyeon behaved really poorly towards her for years, and it’s not “choosing sides” to say that her attitude could even be called petty and childlish.

It’s sad that whatever happened, happened, and I’m fairly certain that SM played a big part in all of it, including fostering bad blood between the members. We all know they eventually drop their acts as if they never existed, and Mr. Mr. was already showing their signs of disinterest. Fanning the flames between the members ensured that they would be the ones with the least to lose out of all three parties by manipulating also the fans as they forced everyone to stop mentioning Jessica and blocking her from the industry, effectively killing any chances for a more truthful explanation. Meanwhile Soshi eventually started to fade (although it is clear fans are still fiercely loyal and willing to wait for them – that’s extremely rare), Jessica took a huge risk while basically killing her music career, while SM carried on to focus on new projects.

If rumors are to be believed though, then Jessica is still close to a few members (Sooyoung, Yoona, Sunny), which I hope is true. The effect her abscence left was evident, and I hope that even if we can’t find out what happened, that they can all mend their friendship, or at least end the bad blood between them, and  acknowledge and be civil to each other.

If anyone remembers Oniontaker on twitter, he was the first to report on her leaving a while before it hit the news, but then "whatever was in conflict has been solved and she will not be leaving" is what he said so people quiet down. (He never mentioned her name but he did allude to it and people figured out that it was jessica).

And the before the articles about her departure were published, he also reported that there is something wrong, so what it interesting in this whole situation was that her leaving did happen overnight, but there has been gossip about it for a while before it dropped. 

That was also why a couple of fans were not as shocked when the news was announced, because it was already talked about.

I agree,SM said she wanted to leave after 1 more album. And both SM and Jessica acknowledge there was a Disagreement / Back and forth around SNSD activities.

But i dont think Jessica thought they woud kick her out on the spot like that. I dont think she was expecting that. Being told 1 day before the fan meet she was officially out. Hence the emotional Weibo post

My speculation is on money being the biggest issue. All the SNSD members have endorsements on their own and solo activities in general so IMO Jessica with Blanc & Eclare, creating a brand in her own terms, would end up making more money and have more creative freedom than the other girls and they were obviously not here for that. I'm not saying it's a case of jealously but a case of contract negotiations going bad.

This really is a good read. This reminds me of my arguments when this fiasco skyrocketed back then.

I do remember there was an argument about the members disagreement which allegedly said coming only from one core member. But I was so shock and bitter that time, frustrated that their bond and antique promise forever 9 was broken in such a cold way.

I never trusted Oniontaker, he alluded to Yuri leaving at one point during this while issue due to her dating or whatever. He has always been an attention seeker, and even if he DOES have some inside info, he twistes words a lot, so when shit doesn’t happen, he can turn it around to “acshualky, I never said x was gonna be a fact”. I’m close to several people who are in turn close to him and Soy, so I have some idea about him that hasn’t been passed around through hundreds of fans.

I agree that SM planned to keep Jessica for one more album, and had meant for the Tokyo Dome Tour to be her grand goodbye, but things got all muddled up. Even the song Divine seems suspiciously tailored to be some sort of “thanks and goodbye” sort of song. It would have been a much better route to take, and none of this cold treatment between everyone would have happened.

For context, I've been a Sone since late 2011-early 2012. My bias ranking around this time was Tiff->Jess->Sun (it's now Tiff->Soo->Yul not because of Jessica or Sunny but just because SooRi appealed to me more, I still love and cherish all of the girls). As far as I'm concerned, neither statement can be trusted. I don't trust SM as far as I can throw them (building or execs, take your pick), so of course I never completely trusted their statement. However Jessica's statement never fully rang true to me. It just didn't make sense that 'the other eight' would vote her out. Unanimously? That's what her statement would imply. Like, they're not a hive mind. If all eight really DID vote her out, then she had to have done SOMETHING or somethings more than has ever come to light. At that point, including trainee years, Jessica had known some of them for a full decade. You don't just turn your back on that deep of a friendship on a whim. And I just don't think that any of the SNSD members had the authority to kick another member out. They didn't even have say on what songs go on their next album or what the title track would be. It's never made any sense that they would be given that kind of say by the company. 

Personally for me I've always thought it comes down to money. It was one thing when Jessica was selling scarves however at that point, Jessica was talking about a perfume line which was coming soon (I don't think that ever happened? Unless I just completely missed it). SNSD already had an endorsement with Girl de Provence going back quite a few years. It was an obvious conflict of interest. And given that Jessica was going to keep expanding her line, it might also put potential future endorsements in jeopardy. I think there's a very good chance that this might've caused SM to worry about their bottom line.

Also, Jessica is definitely still friends with some of them. There have been a few occasions where eagle eyed fans have noticed it on social media eg. a mutual friend tagging them in different photos taken on the same day in what looks to be the same location, Sooyoung and Jessica taking photos on what seemed to be the same balcony. They probably can't acknowledge it publicly without backlash from fans but while there's NO way she's kept in touch with all of them, there definitely seem to be some she's still friends with.

A mystery indeed, but ultimately there are several members whose judgement and determination I respect, who would’ve spoken up if something was out of line. I trust the current 8 members to decide what’s best for them.
 

I think there were a lot of factors here, it was clear to most of the fandom Jessica had been wanting to leave even before she announced Blanc. There was also a rumor that after they prepared content for her departure, she changed her mind about leaving. With her not showing up to meetings to discuss everything, I understand they were probably frustrated and felt like she wasn’t prioritizing the future of the group. The girls are always busy, if she is not showing up to the meetings, how can they figure out the best way to move on?

Okay, I don't have them saved as such - the specific example of the Sooyoung and Jessica balcony photos, Jessica actually has since deleted her photo from her Instagram. Here's some actual evidence though and this is a bit more recent from this year (although I honestly have lost all perception of time at this stage and couldn't tell you when the other one was taken. I had THOUGHT it was early-mid 2019, however I found Sooyoung's photo and it was posted the beginning of this year? idk).

I think most of the examples include Sooyoung, and Yuri has liked some photos with Jessica. But I won’t believe Jess is friends with Sooyoung until I see it, she was one of the few members who showed no remorse about Jessica leaving and she was even kind of ruthless with some of her comments at concerts.

While I agree this would’ve been less painful, wouldn’t it be a lie? I resented what happened for a long time. But I think about how Lay has not been promoting with EXO, and the disappointment never ends. At least this way, it’s final and real.

Also one last point because I'm annoying and don't know how to shut up, Jessica and Taeyeon obviously had a falling out. However I think the degree of animosity between them has been exaggerated by aggrieved fans in the years since 2014 to make either Taeyeon or Jessica the bad guy. After 2011-2012ish, they were never as close as they were in their early years, however they did still have their moments when they seemed to be getting along. There were actually a couple of months in 2014 where things really seemed to be improving.

But I won’t believe Jess is friends with Sooyoung until I see it, she was one of the few members who showed no remorse about Jessica leaving and she was even kind of ruthless with some of her comments at concerts.

Honestly idk about Yuri. She just seems to like a lot of posts that she's tagged in and I don't really know that she's actually looking through them. I'd love to think that there was some healing going on behind the scenes, even if we never see them onstage together as 9, as someone who's followed them for years, I'd love to see them all happy and preferably on speaking terms if at all possible. 
I kind of have to disagree with you about Sooyoung. She's one of the ones who was friends with Jessica for over a decade by 2014. I wouldn't judge someone's tears or lack thereof as proof of guilt or lack of remorse. On the flip side, even if someone IS crying, maybe they DON'T actually care, maybe they're just worried about what it means for the group's popularity and stability. Maybe they feel that it paints them in a bad light and are embarrassed. Maybe they're just good actors. When they're performing at concerts, they're at work. It's very possible she just thought it was unprofessional and was just trying to focus on her work in the moment. I moreso focus on actions and I personally feel like there's been enough evidence to satisfy me that she is taking action to spend time with Jessica behind the scenes. 

To break it down into Friends, Unlikely and I honestly have no clue, I think

friends = Sooyoung, Hyoyeon, Tiffany*, Sunny ** 

Unlikely = Taeyeon, Yuri ***, Seohyun****

I Honestly Have No Clue = Yoona (I think PROBABLY not but I really dunno)

 

* The first time Tiffany played Jessica's music at her concert might've been an accident, the second time, that's on purpose. Not to mention that time they were in California at the same time at judging by their friends' Instagrams, seemed to be hanging out with mutual friends at the same time.

** I just think back to that HyoSun Vlive a while back when Hyoyeon is stumbling around mentioning Jessica and Sunny laughs at her. It just seemed too relaxed and the vibe I got was that those two are definitely both chill with her. That said, Sunny IS very good at toe-ing the company line but just thinking back to that FM date episode where she asked Jessica to come back...she's just not that good an actor.

*** YulSic were one of the big 4 ships but I think people forget how that ship seemed to be sinking that year big time to the extent that the rumor was actually that it was Yuri who was unhappy and going to leave the group. Sure she's liked some photos on Instagram but nothing she's said or done since 2014 has indicated to me personally that the two of them ever really reconciled.

After 2011-2012ish, they were never as close as they were in their early years, however they did still have their moments when they seemed to be getting along. There were actually a couple of months in 2014 where things really seemed to be improving.

Exactly. Taeyeon and Jessica were thick as thieves for a few years after their debut; maybe as close as TaeNy. When the fight happened, it was glarigly obvious there was animosity there, but it also made it glaringly obvious when they started to get along once more. These gifs might not loook like anything other than typical idols goofing around for some, but if you know how Taeyeon treated Jessica for a few good years, you'd know that this was different. It was nice seeing them like this again.
