Unpopular member of a popular group
Except you, all the other members of the group are pretty and talented
You're the only one who looks average and your skills are ambiguous
If you look at the YouTube comments, people are saying "why is she debuting? What's her position?" and comments like these occasionally
There are fans who reject you so there are fans who would skip you during your fansign
But you get to earn a lot of money because the profit gets divided /n
Instead, you have 0 individual promotion so when other members are having individual schedules, you're just on standby
You don't have any income from individual activities and you're the one who is the poorest among the members

Popular member of an unpopular group
Your group is unpopular but you are hard carrying it
People either don't know your group or know your group as XX's group
If you look at the YouTube comments, people are saying "I can't see anyone but XX" or "it's a loss for XX to be in that group"
You're always the center and you're working hard on your individual promotions. You're the breadwinner
The group promotions' income is divided 1/n and you take all the income from your personal schedules
If you get lucky, your group gets to go to a variety show and all the MC's are always going "XX~!" and only care about you
They only look at you and don't talk to the other members. You're the only one who takes care of the other members
Your 1/n income is (a bit) less than if you were in the famous group
Your popularity alone is also (a bit) less than the popular group
Instead, there are a lot of male idols who ask you out

original post: here

1. Straight up 1. You need to care so much about your image for 2 and it feels like your career will be so short....

2. Of course 1. The best is to earn money when nobody knows you

3. 1

4. I feel like my confidence would be ground level if I was 1 so, 2

5. Ah... I'm an attention seeker so I want to be 2

6. 1111 I want to earn money while not attracting attention

7. 1111 it's exactly what I wantㅋㅋㅋ

8. I'm an attention seeker and I have low confidence so, 2

9. 2

10. Straight up 1. If you have confidence, even higher than those popular members, being 1 would be the best

11. 1, it seems nice to be able to earn a ton of money while being buried

12. I feel like my mentality wouldn't be able to endure 1.... I'd rather 2ㅠㅠ

13. Totally 1

2 is really awkward socially and many groups where that is an issue tend to break up early (especially GGs because of sexism in the industry) and often not on good terms, but it's definitely way better for having a post-group career. (e.g. HyunA, Suzy, what MLD tried to do with Yeonwoo)

1 is way better as long as you can make enough money during group promotions and have a decent level of confidence, especially if the popularity gap isn't huge. You get enough money and fame to enjoy the life but not so much that sasaengs will be constantly stalking your every move. But if you have confidence issues I feel like this can really mess with your psyche for a lifetime, plus it'll be a lot harder to sustain a career once the group disbands. Again a much bigger issue for women since GGs tend to break up much earlier than BGs.

i'd rather be the unpopular member of a popular group. you get much less hate/attention for getting more opportunities while still earning money. you don't have to worry your group disbanding because you're too popular. and you can keep on gaining success with your group

1 is better. I'd rather be Hyoyeon or Sunny and still get money from albums and touring then be the famous one in a nugu group

My thoughts exactly, especially seeing were Sunny lived. If you invest your money well and don't live outside your means, you'd have a really good life sans all the pressure the popular members get from always being in the public eye.

both makes money

both is establishing brand whether it be a individual (2) or as a group (1)

(1) if the group is super popular, then even the least popular member is popular compared to some other groups. least popular have a large individual fanbase too.

(2) you're the only profitable one. more risk and responsibility. everything depends on you doing well and not just a trend.

hmm i'll go with #1. i prefer being part of a legacy larger than myself.

#1

I'm sure if RM goes solo rn he'll sell 500k+ copies.

Look at Chen, he's definitely not the most popular member of EXO but sells 300k+ copies of both his album + chart in Melon top 10 for weeks.

Why you think Sunny get so variety shows nowadays? Because she is apart of one of the biggest girl group.

Don't forget she's Lee Soo Man's niece, it probably opened a lot of doors for her.

But yeah I agree with #1. I really wouldn't want to be in Sejeong's place.

I'm not sure why Luda's picture is there. WJSN is not an unpopular group nor is she an unknown/unpopular person in it (indeed she had a lot of fans for her cuteness even before Starship started having her do individual work like variety shows).

I would say Option 1 if the group is really close. For example based on what we know of Kim Sejeong I'm sure she would be willing to trade a huge chunk of her individual success (she's basically all Jellyfish cares about at this point) for Gugudan being successful. The same thing with Jung Chaeyeon and DIA. While Sunny or Hyoyeon are examples - both are "unpopular" only compared to say Yoona or Taeyeon but not in terms of almost any other girl group in Korea -the public knows Sunny and Hyoyeon and they have plenty of individual schedules.
