I felt this way when watching Road to Kingdom but seeing today's MAMA, I felt it even deeper.

 

Aside from TXT, Seventeen and Bangtan's Dynamite, they were all wearing jet black, or scarlet leather jackets, wore super heavy makeup and were all f*cking staring hard into the cameras. They all had this kind of concept.

 

As for their songs, all of them sounded so noisy, had fast beats and you couldn't hear any of the lyrics in their raps. It's like they focused more on the performance? It was like the song was assisting the dancers who were performing... And they were shouting so much...

 

The CG was also so intensely trying to make them look cool. Every team without exception was just shining, exploding and burning in fire...ㅋㅋㅋ

 

But the thing is that most of the male idols were doing this kind of concept one after the other so it became so tiring and boring. When they were performing, they looked so mad (their expressions), so I couldn't connect with the song well. I just felt puzzled?

 

My parents who were watching next to me were asking if they were copying some game charactersㅋㅋㅋ...

 

I feel like the male idols yesterday should've tried some more varied concepts

Why was nobody going for the refreshing concept?

They all failed when doing refreshing concepts and ended up going for something different. Only idols who are already doing well are doing refreshing concepts. Male idols don't have the demand for diverse concepts like female idols do

I wholeheartedly agree with this. And I appreciate Blue Hour by TXT so much because it was so refreshing, nothing super innovative of course but after Run away, Puma and Can't you see me I really felt like they needed a fun song like this.

Ngl idk bc i only really listen/ watch tbz and ptg. But i am into a lottt of gg. I realized recently i used to be even or more into bg but im def mostly interested in gg music now tho. I don't think ptg fits this generaluzation tho. Tbz recent songs mayhaps but they do it well and do other concepts well.

Funny thing is when there are groups like ASTRO, Golden child, The Boyz who were ignored when they were innocent because they were not popular. And now they find them boring because they are dark and mature and catering way too much to international market.

I always wonder where the disparity came from. The hard hitting concept has been popular for years for boy groups but no one seemed to mind. Meanwhile girl groups were always criticized for being either cute or girl crush/sexy, even though in reality their concepts were more diverse. I guess the public and initial fandoms really want boy groups to be similar. I feel like it’s started more towards 3rd gen going into 4th, since in 2nd gen you had groups like Shinee, Beast, and Infinite all doing things a bit different and finding success.

I don't agree at all though. I don't follow many boy groups, but didn't NCT also had many different concepts this year? If anything, I feel like there are many girl groups who sound very similar lately. I was listening to a gg playlist and thought it was from the same group until the very end, it was all the same style of music, loud, kinda noisy, and even if you look at the concept it's bold colours, badass girl crush. But it's not like it's a new thing.
Kpop groups follow trends, like when they all used to do cute concepts, then sexy concepts, now it's badass girl crush concept. It works the same for guys, but it's not like the guys are more similar to each other than the girls. I think it's the same.
