fÄ“ng shÄ màn yán   rÇŽo luàn qíng tiÄn   dÄn xÄ«n zhào míng yuè

The sandstorm spreads and disturbs the clear sky, a loyal heart turns towards the illuminated moon

yáo wàng chéng wài bÄ«ng qì xiÄng jiàn fú shÄ“ng yòu yÄ« jié

Look outside the city, weapons meet and lives are subject to disaster again

jÅ«n dú shÇ’u huáng gÅng yÇ fÄ“i zuó rì wÄ“i yán shéi zài cÇ gÄ›ng yè

The ruler is guarding the palace alone, with none of yesterday’s dignity. Who here is choking with sobs?

故人一直就站在å›çš„é¢å‰  ä¸å•ä¹Ÿä¸æ€¨

gù rén yÄ« zhí jiù zhàn zài jÅ«n de miàn qián  bù wèn yÄ› bù yuàn

The old friend stands as always in front of the ruler, not questioning and not blaming

jÅ«n bÄ›n yì yù  shòu yú tiÄn qí  liú wàn dài gÅng míng

The ruler’s original desire was to live as long as the heavens and leave behind glory for ten thousand generations

故人西辭 [1] ä¸å•æƒ…æ„ æœ‰ä½•é›£èªªæ˜Ž

gù rén xÄ« cí [1] bù wèn qíng yì  yÇ’u hé nán shuÅ míng

The old friend bids farewell[1] If he doesn’t bother about affection then what is there that’s difficult to express clearly?

dÇŽ luàn le jÅ«n yÄ« tÇ’ng tiÄn xià de yuÄ“ dìng  shéi kÄ› yÇ tóng xíng

The ruler’s undertaking to unify the lands under heaven has been thrown into upheaval, who can journey together with (the old friend)

原來ä¸éœ€è¦ç”¨æˆ°çˆåŽ»å¹³å®šè¦å…ˆå¾—人心

yuán lái bù xÅ« yào yòng zhàn zhÄ“ng qù píng dìng  yào xiÄn dé rén xÄ«n

Actually one does not need to use war, to pacify one must first gain the hearts of the people

The old friend’s hair has turned white, covered by the vicissitudes of life (he) does not ask unreasonably to start again

zhÇ pàn jÅ«n néng shÅu qÇ zhàn tái  duàn tóu huàn bù lái

He only hopes for his ruler to put away his battle stations, death does not help obtain (one’s desires)

Zuì hòu de chéng qiáng pò kÄi dÄ“ng gÄo wàng hÇŽi yÄ« piàn yÄn huÇ’ hÇŽi

The last city walls are split open, scale the heights and look towards the sea,  a sea of smoke and fire

Wú néng wéi lì shÄ« biàn mÇŽn dì gù rén xÄ«n yÇ yuÇŽn

Powerless, corpses cover the ground everywhere, the old friend’s heart is already distant

A wave of the hand, a bending of the knee (to kneel), raising the jade cup to grant the world a pardon

T/N:

[1] 故人西辭gù rén xÄ« cí: The phrase appears to have been taken from the poem <<黄鶴樓é€åŸæµ©ç„¶ä¹‹å»£é™µ>> by the Chinese Poet Li Bai. The poem is about Li Bai bidding good bye to his friend Meng Haoran at the Tower of the Yellow Crane. In the present context it could mean exile to the west or even death.
