Well butt is short for buttock but you don’t say your butts are hurting.
I’ll go with the two butt cheeks but one butt.

Never thought I’d be thinking about this question though lol

I'd argue that "butt" is short for "buttocks", plural. I think it's what most dictionaries would say, too.

The usage of "buttock" as a singular is pretty rare, whereas I believe "buttocks" used to be the polite and common way to refer to that area for a long time

Either way you slice it, it's really interesting how this question kind of works in English too if you really think about what "butt" means lol since it's a singular-noun shortening of a plural word lol

But what's also interesting is that the first dictionary definition of "buttock" I found on google said that "butt" is actually the root of the word with "-ock" slapped on the end (for some reason??) but it also says that "butt" is derived from "buttocks" so....... it's a bit of a the-chicken-or-the-egg scenario it seems haha

Lol I was looking it up too but there didn’t seem to be a clear cut answer.

I suppose if we went anatomically we could talk about insertions and originations. We technically have two glutes but butt refers to, well someone’s whole butt.

...it’s funny how this created such a deep discussion haha
