Is it common for people in your country/region to smile at strangers?

Yes but it's not every time a stranger makes eye contact. I feel like it's only in certain situations.

Like if there are people walking through a door, and a person is waiting for the doorway to clear, you might smile at them if you make eye contact as they walk through because it's... polite? Like "thank you for waiting"

But if you accidentally just make eye contact with someone while walking around in most situations, no. Maybe if you're just in a really good mood. Lol

In the US it completely depends on which part of the country you live in. I've lived in the south (Augusta, Georgia) where people are super polite and smiley, the northeast (Annapolis, Maryland) where people hate you and hope you walk into traffic, the northwest (Bremerton, Washington) where people are either nice or neutral, and the west (San Francisco bay area, California) where no one has time for you.

Yea probs its happened to me a lot but i never respond. Im prolly seen as rude but ut can't be helped tbh. I had hard time talking to ppl due to deep anxiety issues/avpd. And my voice sometimes isnt clear.. just comes out hoarse which is embarassing . Id say this happens to me 75% tge time someone suddenly says sumn to me and i try to respond quick to not be rude. Its also annoying for me when some ppl wanna be cheeky ab how soft my voice is like "you have to speak up" like sis this is the loudest my voice is getting.  If i tried "speaking up" my voice will 100% be hoarse and cracked..prolly not understandable ❤
