A multi-membered traditional girl group with a concept like SNSD's early debut concept or (Power innocence with a powerful group dance)

Actually, SNSD is the only multi-membered girl group in SM, and although there is a lot of judgement towards an innocent concept because its a time were overseas fans are important, I think there are a lot of posts about wanting to see a multi-membered innocent girl group from SM again.

(Even if its only during early debut like SNSDㅇㅇ )

A public-friendly easy to listen to song with a sharp group dance and a girl-like innocent concept.

(Gee jacket concept)

A lot of people want a fresh sharp group dance especially with a concept like this.

Though it's true that they exploded in popularity with Gee, They entered Gallup from early debut and entered Gallup's songs of the year in 2007. Their fandom was also big. (I am including this so you wouldn't write comments flogging Soshi saying that we don't have such girl groups because even SNSD wasn't popular with their innocent concept.)

(T/N: the rest of the comments are all “no it won’t be successful now”, “it did well because of Soshi”, and “missing SNSD” etc)

  • This kind of concept is not well received these days so I doubt there will be a girl group like this.
  • It's because what we saw was Soshi...
  • These days they don't do this kind of concept because of overseas fans.
  • But trends return again anyway so if their visuals are good like Soshi and their debut song is innocent and fcking good they will be popular.
  • When Soshi first appeared I found it so cool how such innocent idols did a powerful dance and were kicking their legs even though I am a girl myselfㅋㅋ They were innocent but not just simply innocent so I thought they chose a very good concept. Especially ITNW it's such a legendary song.
  • It's just because Soshi are good and the songs were good. And it was a time were this was in demand.
  • Innocence doesn't do well these days.
  • I love Baby Babyㅠㅠ
  • Baby baby, Kissing You, ITNW, and Girls Generation are all legendary songsㅠㅠ
  • Though i want another group like SNSD, it doesn't have to be an innocent concept..my favorite Soshi concept is Genie. I want to see a group with a combination of a standard visual with a good physical and a stan attractor powerful main vocal but SM can't do that now.
  • It's because Soshi matches all concepts that's why they matched an innocent concept too.. I want to see a girl group like Soshi for once; a multi membered group with all the members having strong characteristics yet matching well with the group.
  • I just think that SM won't be able to make kids like SNSD again.
  • To do an innocent concept you need visuals as good as SNSD + kids who are the top in their individual position for a sharp dance + supported with even vocals or skills so it's hard to make such a group..I think SNSD got popular not because of their innocent concept but because of their dance + good skills combined with their visuals.
  • A lot of people are saying that Soshi weren't popular then but that's wrong. Surprisingly, that was the time Soshi gained male fans and female fans came during Genie.
  • Innocent doesn't do well these days and it's not like Soshi got popular with their innocent concept either.
  • What do you mean they didn't do well with innocent concept? Kissing You, Baby Baby, ITNW and especially Gee were all hitsㅋㅋㅋ Of course Gee was a legendary hit and they did way better after it but they weren't unpopular before it. It was nice to see their clean and innocent side.
  • It will probably be hard to make..
  • It's just because Soshi is Soshi.
  • So Tiffany was amazing..
  • It's hard to find. Such good kids.
  • This kind of concept doesn't do well these days..especially overseas.
  • Woah now that I think about it, Soshi is the only multi-membered girl group in SM.
  • This kind of concept doesn't sell these days. Don't look for a 2020 SNSD-like girl group and just stan SNSD. Times have changed and even Soshi stans are tired of people asking for a girl group like this.
  • Soshi's debut song won 1st place on music show and they won 1st place on public TV with Girls Generation they did it all. They were popular before Gee and their fandom was growing. Did you think they were a failure before Gee?
  • If you want to see Soshi then stan them.
  • Wasn't Lion Heart an innocent concept as well? Personally I don't want a girl group like Soshi I just want SNSD...
  • Stan Soshi.
  • I honestly do miss it. Songs these days all have a strong beat.
  • I just miss SNSD.
  • But didn't Soshi start with innocent and then change their concept with each album? I remember them as a girl group that matches all concepts.
  • They're just saying to do a Soshi concept with a multi-membered girl group because Soshi is the most popular among SM girl groups..but Soshi is Soshi.
  • It did well back then but it's not today's taste.
  • Taeyeon is such a con character I am watching the performance but my eyes keep following her.
  • Give us a Soshi comeback..
  • This concept might do well in Asia but not in the rest of the world.
  • Soshi can match all concepts.
  • You just miss Soshi.
  • Legends are not legends for nothing. I seriously miss the best girl groupㅠㅠ Soshi as a whole..
  • Can't SNSD just make a comeback..ㅠㅠ
  • I want to hear a song like ITNW ㅠㅠ

We had numerous concepts like this, none of them did well, thats why idols are following the trend now.

We hold idol groups to our own weird standards, yet allow more understanding it should be when it comes to other things, creating a very unhealthy and copy paste industry, blame lies with us.

Do you think if a group came out with a song like this, they would do well? I strongly doubt, people would just call them boring. Came out wearing innocent and more simple outfits? They would be called too simple and basic. We created the stupid standards, now we will suffer them.

What people want is SM stopping with its weird experimentalism. People don't want a NCT girl version nor a girl group whose songs sounds like a female version of NCT either like Loona. People want a beautiful, with a fixed number of members, without weird creepy avatars, proper girl group with good and catchy pop songs like SM had before.

Agree with @lighterxx . There are quite a few groups that still do concepts like this. Especially when they debut and as rookies. Youthful concepts naturally fit their age. However ifans and KFANS do not give these groups much attention lately. Everyone is into girl crush and teen crush. But i guess if a girl group from a Big 3 company or some other popular company/franchise were to do concept perhaps they would gain more attention. and be credited for making the trend popular again.

These days I don't really think groups go for that uniform concept anymore. Sad because I think the teamwork and cohesiveness was one of the things that impress me about K-pop. For starters no two members are going to be dressed the same cos everyone is drenched in branded clothing now.

I don't miss the innocent concept at all but I do miss public friendly music from SM. At least Red Velvet is getting a bit of it with Psycho, Bad Boy etc but poor NCT will never hit it as big as their seniors as long as they keep releasing experimental title tracks. Hopefully the new girl group won't go into the same direction.

Exactly, its not about group, concept or anything

Its about sm

Otherwise we truly had many innocent concept ggs, which none of them did good

im 100% sure SM was about to debut a group like this initially, judging by the ex-SM rookies. but somewhere in the last few years, they decided to completely switch their concept for aespa to follow the girl crush wave that blackpink, everglow, and g(i)-dle are riding rn

Usually SM is the type that created something new. When they created SNSD, there no group like this at the time with more than 5 members and then SNSD debuted and became the blueprint of girlgroups and you see all these companies created multi-numbered ggs similar to SNSD and taking inspiration from them.

But now with aespa, so far I see these girls as like the SM version of BP/ITZY. I wished SM went back to the times where they created and lead the trends and not follow them.

This make me realize throughout the years about the gg trend.

Pre-SNSD, the ggs were  3 members (SES) or 4 (Chakra,Finkl) or 5 members (WG,Baby Vox). Having more than 5 members was unheard of back then.

SM took it to the next level by debuting 9 members in a group. Back then this was considered very new and different and created alot of buzz. Ppl were against at first saying too many members but at after they debuted, many ppl liked them and they became a hit because you have 9 different visuals, different types of girls with different interesting personalities that catered to different ppl. SNSD changed the game in kpop. Then a bunch of these smaller companies took notes of SNSD success and debuted around 9 members (7, 8, 9, 12, etc) in a gg. You have T-ARA, Nine Muses, Dal Shabet, After School, etc following this trend of having many members in the group. It's still the blueprint for companies to debut the ggs today.

Then we know how experimental and unique f(x) was as they stood out alot because there's no other group in kpop like this, nobody even tried to copy them. SM didn't try to recreate SNSD, they were making f(x) as the antithesis of SNSD. It was like an alternative to SNSD. for those that think SNSD is not their cup of tea, they might like f(x). F(x) went through alot of unique concepts - quirky, weird, avant-garde, experimental, gothic, etc.

Fast forward to 2012-2015, sexy ggs were the trend like Sistar, GsD and AOA. At the same time cute and girly concept ggs making a cb - with the likes of Apink, Gfriend, Hello Venus(before the revamp), OH MY GIRL, etc. There was like a clash of gg concepts and the topic of sexy vs cute ggs were hot back then. The opposites of these two gg concepts coexisted in kpop and were the trend that you started to see a bunch of new ggs at the time either debuted with either sexy or cute image. But SM debuted RV by not following any of these trends by making them the quirky whimsical unique fun girls concept in kpop and started the dual concept.

But now with aespa, unlike SM's past ggs, SM is following and blending with the trend of girl crush rebellious concepts. I think SM has lost their peak, that leader of Kpop position and the uniqueness of what made them stood out on the past years. I wonder if their management changed alot throughout the years (this includes the higher up and board of directors).

Not every SM's past ggs were popular and successful though. SM have had failures. Isak N Jiyeon flopped, MILK was short-lived, CSJH (probably the most talented gg especially in terms of vocals - they were a vocal and acapella group - but also had impressive choreos) sadly never found success and recognition that they deserved. It's all about timing, luck, it factor and a question of whether they're able to stand out.

But how will this trend comeback when GGs get automatically bashed for doing such concepts...?!

Twice started doing girly, and innocents concepts ( not exactly) but like TT, KK, and Likey, WIL and then they get bashed for not being experimental enough or accused of being incapable of doing mature and edgy concepts which has been proven wrong.

Gfriend, same case...

I do wish for more traditional kpop sound groups in general...it is starting to loose it's sound even though it has been always influenced by western music but still, it had a distinguished style which is completely gone nowadays.

That’s why Kpop is so boring in comparison to how it used to be. There’s this unnecessary need to appeal to western fans who don’t want any real diversity, cuz if it’s not a girl crush group having a song filled with bass, trap, and “I’m Bad” lyrics, then it isn’t worth listening to in their eyes, which is terrible.

With that said, I’m sure someone is bound to bring this concept back. In 2014, everyone and their mothers did sexy. Then 2015 came, & Gfriend revived innocent while Twice revived cute, alongside the fact that Twice showed a multinational GG can indeed work.

Seeing as BigHit is coming out with new GGs, hopefully they (or at least one of them) will stray away from the girl crush trend, so that diversity can come back.

I dunno guys, perhaps stop acting like women have an expiration date and just let these great popular groups continue to promote?

I don't want another group like SNSD, I want SNSD.

THIS SO MUCH!

So sick of haters calling them 'aunties' or 'oldies' when they are actually living their best years and careers! I want another SNSD comeback!

That time they did Genie jazz version for an end of the year special, you can see how their stage presence, charisma and vocals are unrivalled.

I don't think this is something exclusive to 'girly' and 'innocent concepts'. New girl groups doing 'girl crush' concepts (ITZY, Everglow etc) also receive similar comments of wanting to be 2ne1 wannabe or now... blackpink wannabe. It is what it is. But it's about breaking past that first hurdle, right?

But yeah, I get what you mean about 'traditional' kpop sounds. I miss the era of Snsd/Kara/T-ara. But I don't hate where K-pop is now. It is still very fun and I'm keen to see how it evolves and where it goes. (the land of virtual idols 🤣?)
