Trying overwatch for the first time

I got a free copy of Overwatch recently, so I thought I'd give it a chance for the first time. I've never been a big fan of these games, so it's hard to really get into. It's far from a bad game since it looks like such a great game, but it's honestly not my type  Does anyone have any advice for someone trying to get into it.

It's a complex game so it can take some getting used to. I'd suggest trying different heroes and seeing how they fit your playstyle and what you enjoy. If you like FPS you might enjoy Widowmaker, Soldier76, Ana, Mccree or Ashe. The most fun heroes to play are probably Tracer, Lucio, Echo, Genji and Wrecking Ball since they're very mobile, but they're also not that easy to play.

I'd suggest you play some quick play or one of the various modes in the arcade. Deathmatch is probably the most straightforward, and there are some different versions of it. It's a pretty good way of learning what the characters can do but you might not do very well in the beginning.

As someone that played Overwatch from day 1, many of your problems might simply stem from the fact that the userbase is not the same it was before. Most of the decent players left a long time ago and now it's all about smurfs or newbies. Competitive matches are extremely unbalanced because you get this mix of people that come from different skill levels and winning has become way harder than it used to be.

However, if you want to still give it a chance (it can still be a pretty fun game and there is nothing quite like it in the market right now), I'd recommend to first learn 1 hero in 1 role at the BEST you can. I know many people complain about having a main but that's literally the best way to play the game. Know 1 thing so well, you SMASH super hard with it. Second step is to then learn how to play fairly well the other heroes in its same role (DPS, Tank, Support) and third step once you've gotten better at the game, branch out and find a main in the other roles too. Optimal outcome would be to have 2 mains in each role, but if you're not a flex player, then stick to what you are REALLY good at. I always prefer to have people that know what they're doing in my team than to have someone switch to a hero they don't know how to use and just feed. In the end Overwatch is all about ultimates: whoever dishes it out last ends up winning (and taking the point). That's why it's important to plan their usage and keep them when you know the enemies will push. BUT, don't keep it indefinitely to get a team-kill. An ult that gets 2 people or both supports or a tank can more often than not win you a game. As long as you have an advantage, no matter how small, it's easy to steamroll.

Also keep in mind Overwatch 2 is gonna come out at some point and it will bring life to the game again, at least better than how it is right now.
