From what I remember L was VERY popular in the Kpop community for his visual. Everyone use to name drop him when talking about boy group visuals.

However that popularity didn't cross over much to public. He wasn't a "it" boy in South Korea.

This could due due to many reasons, including lack of promotions. I don't know.

he's known and has his own popularity, of course, i agree

however i've never seen him described as it boy in korea.

mmmm yeah. ppl say he was not "it boy" but there weren't a lot of it boys from the second gen. i think Nichkhun and Im Siwan were the only visual it boy? but along with them, L was quite popular, Siwon, Minho, Lee Joon, and Hyungsik, who has surpassed them all.

He is the only male 2nd gen visual who still gets mentionned a lot on pann (which is full of teens), if this doesn’t show his popularity then idk what it shows.
