Netizens begin to reconsider the Korean eating culture of sharing soups and side dishes

Article: Eating out of the same jjigae bowl? It's time for Korean eating culture to change

Source: E-Daily via Nate

1. [+410, -13] With jjigaes, we've started to normalize putting some aside for yourself in a separate bowl... The real problem is the sharing of all the side dishes..

2. [+246, -11] I think what's more dangerous during these times isn't all the shared jjigaes and side dishes but the container that holds all the utensils for people to take out. You're bound to end up touching the other utensils while pulling your spoon out, so imagine if an infected person reached in for a spoon and then spread it to everyone else who used that container?

3. [+197, -26] Whenever I see my co-workers dip their spoon into a side dish, I'll refuse to eat it even if it's my favorite

4. [+28, -5] It's also wrong to accuse people of being too sensitive when they bring this up

5. [+25, -5] It's about time we change our eating culture. Ladle aside some jjigae for yourself in separate bowls, portion out the side dishes for everyone individually... it'll not only reduce waste but it's probably more hygienic too. It's time that we focus more on hygiene and cleanliness.

6. [+20, -6] That's why I always portion out everything for myself separately. Need to start educating kids who dip their spoons into everything.

7. [+19, -5] Don't you get looks if you still eat like this outside?

8. [+17, -0] What's also a problem is when everyone's drinking out of and sharing shots from the same soju glass.. ugh, gross..

9. [+14, -1] I learned in history that Koreans actually had a culture of individual portions 100 years ago until we went through all those wars and food became scarce so it was easier for everyone to eat from the same table... I think the pandemic is just returning us to how we originally used to eat.

10. [+10, -0] I remember just last year, people were nagging about anyone who dared to complain about not wanting to share from the same bowl... the pandemic has managed to change a habit that I never thought would change.

11. [+9, -0] I shudder thinking of all the spoons that ate out of the same jjigae ㅋㅋ

12. [+7, -2] Even with traditions, it has to change to fit the times. Don't resist it.

Sharing soups is no no, but my culture too shares side dishes

Tho you can put it to your plate, why would there be a problem from this lol

knetz specifically talking about dipping in the same dish. plus they go into details about other stuff too

the biggest problem is it's easier to transmit germs which is why they mention the pandemic

Sharing is okay as long as you use different spoon

Spoon to take the soup/side dishes is different than the one that put in your mouth

agree

however here koreans tend to use their eating chopsticks and spoons. unless they're eating soups or ramen, they don't even use a separate plate. just grab and eat. (edit: they always make sure to each have their own bowl of rice tho)

i'm sure we've all watched our kpop favs eat like this.

for dippings, we tend to put untouched foods in to sauce, and be careful of fork not touching it too

but its probably different for koreans rip, but if they are this uncomfortable, they can just ask for a different plate idk why its such an issue for them lol

i think you're sort of missing the point of the post? lol^^

sharing wasn't uncomfortable for them. koreans literally share everything. however due to the pandemic knetz are noticing things differently. more aware.

also yes i watched personally as hoshi literally poked his chopsticks into everyone's food. tbh i dont mind as long as its a person im very close to lol and if i know where they have been to, which... all idols know where is each other i assume o.o

yea my favs eat all over each other too.

i'm different. even with close friends I would prefer not to have the liquids from their mouth touch my food. ewww

lol seriously tho, the only people i don't mind sharing to an extent is my parents, brother, and boyfriend.

mayhaps, im sleepless and just rambling

i was more of commenting on this

like why do they do this as an example, thats why i felt need to compare with what i know o.o

i cant share with my parents lol, side foods but never same glass etc

..... however i do share everything with my cat which is a bit concerning

lol

yea i think that knet comment is saying when people try to discuss not wanting to share, some people (koreans) get sensitive. it's hard breaking away from tradition.

i can share food with my parents but not drinks. the whole backwash thing yikes

your cat? shook. i could never

tbh rude eating manners isn't exclusive to korean culture lol, i come from a vietnamese family and their eating manners aren't the best either (like talking while their mouth is still full).

maybe eating loudly is a way of showing you're enjoying the food in some cultures? i don't know...i'll admit sometimes i have to to skip or turn away from my favs when it's to much. there are certain members that i know to avoid lol.

yep, like in Japanese culture slurping is actually viewed as polite because it tells the chef that you really enjoy the food, but apparently in the western sphere it's rude.

yea here it's rude and childish. not polite.
