[theqoo] AN ISSUE REGARDING GROUPS' DISBANDMENTS THAT DIVIDE A LOT OF FANS

spacer.png

#1 "Let's stay together forever"

You want them to say together forever

Even if there is no promise about future promotion, keeping the group together is good enough

Even if only a few of the members renewed their contracts, or even if all of the members leave the company, there is no official news about a disbandment. So if the timing is right, there's a chance that everyone can get together and promote together again

spacer.png

#2 You want them to just cleanly disband

If they don't have any promises regarding future activities, it means nothing to keep their group name. It's better to disband than to have fake hope.

These days, there are a lot of groups that don't give out official news about disbandment. Instead, they would promote individually as "X group's member"

Another issue that a lot of people are fighting about is for groups that don't promote for a lot of years.
They either argue that the group has in fact disbanded vs there is no official news so they are still together

original post: here

1. 2 is better. The fans of the other groups of their new company are always fighting us every day. Just cut it down with the fake hope

2. 2ㅜㅜ 1 is just hope torture... I wouldn't be able to endure it and would just quit the fandom

3. 11

4. 2. If you're not gonna promote, just go on your separate ways

5. 2. Wouldn't it be more profitable if every member just promotes individually? Their personal fans will follow them anyways

6. 2222 1 just feels like exploitation of fans as consumers

7. 111, the feeling is just different...

8. If they don't get into any controversy, 1

9. Straight up 1. When time passes by, they will get back together. Just look at Finkl

10. Me too I fangirled on a group that had a long hiatus. In the end, they never announced the disbandment news and the members just left the company so seeing a group promotion will be difficult. Before that, I was definitely rooting for 1 and I was an all-fan... but even though it's sad, I think that 2 is better for the singer and the fans

The two types of opinions that is popularly discussed among fans when it comes to idol groups disbanding

Recently, there has been a discussion on an online community [theqoo] over a topic that has been popular among Kpop idol fans for a long time.

Since Kpop idol groups popped up in the music industry, fans have always been divided into two sides as they discuss throughout the generations. The topic of the discussion is whether fans should stay by the idol groups' side and be against them disbanding or agree to the disbandment of the group for the betterment of both the artists and the fans.

This has been an ongoing discussion among many Kpop idol fans throughout the years. There is an equal amount of fans standing on each side of the opinion.

One type of fan is the type who remains with the group forever, no matter how long the idol group has not promoted together. Sometimes when an idol group's contract is over, some of the members renew their contracts with the agency while some members decide to leave the agency. This in turn makes it difficult for the idol group to promote as a whole. Although the idol group did not officially declare they have disbanded, the members are often seen promoting individually.

The fans who decide to support the group state they will wait for their idol group to make a comeback as a group in the indefinite future. These fans are known as the loyal type. These fans mostly want the name of the group to be sustained and have the fandom a home that the members can always come back to.

However, there are the fans who stand opposed to this. These are the fans who claim that it is unfair for the fans to keep waiting indefinitely. They state that just maintaining the group name is meaningless and is just keeping an empty shell. This type of fan prefers to cleanly declare their disbandment so that the fans can move on.

This issue has been around the Kpop culture for a long time. Usually, fans within the same fandom argue over the topic. While some fans state that the group is disbanded in reality because they have not promoted in years, other fans state that the group is not disbanded since there was no official announcement of it.

This topic has appeared once again, as Korean fans and netizens give their two cents in the argument.

Comments:

1. The choice of staying with a group that hasn't promoted in ages is torture. It's better if the group just officially announce they disbanded, then the fans can move on.

2. Yeah, I think choice two is better since so many fans drop out of the fandom anyway if they get tired of waiting.

3. Choice one would be the true fans who stand by the group and support them even if they individually promote.

3. I think it's actually really hard to promote as a group if some members leave the company. But I still have hopes that might change. So number 1.

4. I think after experiencing being part of a fandom, I think choice number 1 is best. You still can support them individually.

5. I think It's hard to keep waiting without a definite time that they will come back. So number 2.

i biased f(x) and girl's day, this is a question for me...

with their hiatus, i missed them but i kinda just moved on

i prefer the groups to disband immediatelly cause wtf is that thing of "we actually never disbanded" and then the members proceed to avoid contacting each other until they are hags

personally, i'd want them to do what's best for them and their mental health. disband if they want to, stay together if they want to. i have many other interests and things to occupy my time, i don't need content 24/7 (although i certainly appreciate it when it does comes out).

as for "giving up" on them, i don't get why you either have to be a loyal fan or someone who ditches and ignores them, you can just be in-between. i don't need to be obsessing over my faves every day just like they don't need to be pumping out content every day. i'll just check out whatever they release and, if they don't release anything, i won't worry too much about it either. life goes on

1, I don't mind when there is a hiatus for the group and members to go out and do their own thing, but I would like them to stay together and get at least one cb a year rip

Its selfish perhaps, but some groups are simply more precious when group is complete.

Some people are the type to move on or stay. If a person is still willing to check out a group's content [even casually] then that means they haven't moved on yet.

If them being on an indefinite hiatus means that they can't promote at all, whether it be solo projects, in sub unit or joining another group, I'd rather they just disband. It would be so unfair if the company just let them waste their talents away just to keep the group together.

I'll stay if I like their music enough. 2NE1 disbanded but I still love their music. I'm not holding onto hope that they'll get back together.

But, I think, with the attachment that some fans do have with their favorite groups it is better to disband cleanly. This "we are staying together forever" and not doing anything together as a group really can mess with a fan's psyche as far as giving them false hope. This is an extreme case but we know that some kpop fans are heavily attached to their favorite groups.

Honestly i hate the thing of idols insisting they didn't disband and just left company when 99% the time they will all go their sep ways and not even reunite in future. Albeit we know from beast having to rebrand,  companies would b stingy w/ copyright if they even tried. Tho maybe not always cuz cube is just a btch sometimes & beast was their breadwinner so they were tryna hold on. Even still insane tho esp since 90% their music the last few years was written by  junhyung/his production duo) but cube still was like nah we own "beast".

Anw i kinda think of this cuz im a fan of Myname and when they left h2 there were reports they disband but mbrs insist they didn't and its just like..pointless to me. If you don't plan to continue promoting tgt just disband. If in a few yrs yall wanna reunite. Sure, do it.

Tho this reminded me cuz 1 of the 2 grps i stan is izone. And they will (prolly, but im praying for extension) disband in april but that's def not something im "moving on" from.  Honestly when i fell out of kpop earlier this yr i never imagined stanning another grp than tbz. Even grps i liked as much as tbz: omg, ptg, everglow (actually ive still been paying attn to EG but not as heavily as the 2 grp i Stan)... just faded in interest to me. Then outta nowhere im thinking of  how lver is prolly my fav kpop song so im listening to it on loop a few weeks ago and im like huh lemme listen to rest of their disco 🤔🧐 and its All 10/10, so now a stan. I will def pay attn to which each mbr does next.  Stan them as soloist. Follow their new grps, stan those too maybe.  Enter jpop stan verse cuz ill miss jline if not 😢

hum i guess it all depends on the situation. like if groups activities are on hiatus but members are still active individually or if the group is on hiatus and the members are inactive. but in any situation i would like for things to be clearly stated at least. Sometimes you can feel that idols (and/or they company) pretend that they did not disband just to use the group brand name. The most important is for the members of the group to be able to agree on all this imo

But i have to admit that if a group i stan were to be inactive (no new contents, music,...) for a long time i would probably naturally transition from fan to casual listener

it really depends...are we talking After School 5 billion years hiatus or 2+ year typical army hiatus affecting groups like VIXX and INFINITE because obviously if its the 1st and the company/group has zero plans of coming back i'd much rather they just pull off the bandage and get it over with instead of keeping the fans waiting like a bunch of clowns.

I feel like "we/they are not disbanding" are just empty words. Is there a different, deeper meaning of it?

It doesn't change that whether they're disbanding or not my favorite group won't be promoting as "f(x)" in nearby future, if ever again. They interact publicly here and there, especially on anniversary day, but that's it. They're sweet memories and legacy.

it depends of the reason for the long hiatus, if there's still a chance for them to stay together and continue as a group in a future time, I prefer them to not disband.

I stan a group that have gone through a long hiatus, but now they're doing their own stuff and still continue promoting as a group.

If they don't release anything for years, obviously I'll move on to other groups. But I would start to support them again if they ever decide to comeback. Like, I don't really unstan, I will keep my love and my support there.

If they can have individual schedules and still keep the group together, at least on paper, with a chance to comeback, then it would be great. If keeping the group together means they aren't allowed to perform in other ways, I'd rather have them disband and find better suited companies.

Ultimetly, I want my biases to be happy. If the singer is happy under their current company, then be it, if  they believe a solo career under a different company is better, then be it, if they want to quit celebrity life, then be it. I will support them in what they want to do.

2 is better for the group, if you choose 1 you're either a sadist or don't know how the industry works

you'd rather have your idols rot in the dungeon... locked behind a contract so they can't make any money or live their own life.... who tf would wish that on anybody..?

Bap was my ult so they were lol. On one hand you want them to stay together, that's not only a good sign because it means THEY want to stay together, but also so you see them again. On the other hand, you want what's best so if they disbanded then you'd accept it.

I def would rather a group just disband openly, though, than to cling to hope.

edit: Also, because I realize bap was special circumstances, I got over black pink really quick because of YG's bs lol. I still like them and their music but could never stan again. Indefinite hiatuses suck.

I think the Pristin example showed its better to get out when you can. Nayoung and Siyeon are acting now, the Hinapia members had a shot at redebuting (not their fault COVID hit their small company) and Kyla has started a YT channel and released music. Meanwhile the ones still under Pledis - Shannon and Yewon are still dungeoned (Shannon is presnt on IG and working on music and supposedly a debut but this is Pledis...) while Pinky is trying to kick the company to the curb from China. Compare to After School where Kaeun and E-young who are both very talented basically had the prime of their "idol" years wasted on a group that was all but disbanded in name.

I also think of Gugudan and what they're going through. Sally making that Chinese "Produce Camp" group is the best thing that ever happened to her and she can be a big star in China BUT its clear her not performing with Gugudan was not her choice. The other members constantly reference her and have left comments on her new IG. Meanwhile all Gugudan members not named Sejeong (and Mina with acting at least) have all but ceased to exist except on their personal social medias. Mimi, Hana and Soyee have all started YT channels and Gugudan hasn't had a comeback in two years. Like After School they only exist in name at this point. Jellyfish should let the other 6 non IOI members go.
