She has been caught in a 'cultural appropriation' controversy

Cultural appropriation refers to the use of elements of a particular culture or identity by members of other cultures.

It can be a problem when members of the dominant culture are discriminating against others, or when the culture that is relatively weak is distorted without a proper understanding.
For example, a typical case is that white people imitating black hairstyles.

It's becoming quite controversial on IG and Twitter

original post: here

1. No but it just seems like she found other cultures' clothes to be cute.. What is it an issue??;;

2. It's so tiring, how can they live like this?

3. They're being way too sensitive

4. Then they should stop doing straight or wavy hair..

5. To live in a world where racism still hasn't disappeared, I can understand why black people would find it upsetting to see white people saying how pretty it looks. But even Jamaican people are fine with this so I can't help but think that they're being too harsh here, on the other hand, I can understand that they have a deep history of racism against black people, so they're sharing their point of view

6. There are so many people in the comments explaining for everyone so why am I still seeing comments here telling black people to stop doing straight hair, etc... Do you think that black people do that hair because they want to? Even when Obama was in power, it's the same country who said that she doesn't have good hair and they wanted her to do it for "black people to look better" that's plain racism because they're coerced to do hair like this, so why are you guys bashing black people here?

7. When foreigners come to our country to try out hanboks and dye their hair darker color, we just think that they're trying to experience our culture, so why do they hate it so much? Because they're white?

8. It's a different case for black people trying to have straight hair... Black people have no choice but to braid their hair due to the nature of their hair, African Americans who are above middle class spend a lot of time and money trying to maintain their straight hair or they would use wigs (wigs are also f*cking expensive). That's their so-called "good-hair", but lately, they've been trying to remove this stigma and let their natural hair out, but whenever they do it, it's often viewed as inappropriate. That's something that was forced on the black community by white people to confirm to their standards.

9. But she's not doing this to belittle them, and it's not even black people's culture, she's just doing this because she found the culture pretty so is it still considered discrimination? Though I would understand them being pissed if people misunderstand this being white culture instead of black culture

10. The only answer is to not touch anything that's from black people and not get associated with them

WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL.

okay but I don't think what she did was appropriation. She just looks really silly. I think she was appreciating Jamaican culture but, again, she looked so silly.

By definition, cultural appropriation is taking one's culture and trying to pass it off as your own. Think like Jack in Nightmare Before Christmas how he went to Christmas Land and he basically tried to pass off Christmas as something he made.

Oooh a neg! Guys, I didn't say she appropriated shit. I just said she looked silly.

Honestly, I still don't understand the concept of CA in a globalized world. It just doesn't make sense to expect cultures to not be mixed. I'm also mixed, so it gets even more confusing

Well, by definition, it means to basically take something from a culture and say you did it or you invented it.

For example, if I were to make chopsticks and say that I discovered it then that is cultural appropriation because I took something from another culture and said I did it and no one else did. The internet has messed up the meaning soooooo much.

This I understand. But the way people jump in anyone that uses something that isn't from their culture...

The way I see, if we really took it the way people on Twitter say it is, we couldn't even enjoy music from other countries bc it's from another culture

That's why I said the internet has twisted it soooo much. The majority of people I see are just mocking her because of how silly she looks. She acknowledged the culture which is great.

A very thoughtful response!

I think people need to understand why us (black women) do relaxers. It's because our nasty hair was deemed unruly and nasty. It's still that way. Why we spend so much money on our hair. So much time. Black people get fired in America for having their natural curls.

Reading the comments on her instagram, everything seems to be so mixed. So far I have seen Americans say its offensive, the British say its okay because shes at carnival and apparently everyone does it, also saw Jamaicans say they love it. Obviously im generalizing the top comments here but its such a mix of opinions.

This is actually how I explain cultural appropriation to others.

It's also looking down on another culture's ways, but then when someone who's considered "high class" starts to do it it's suddenly OK. I.E.: cornrows, nameplate necklaces, nail art, etc. were once considered "ghetto" but now it's on trend because the Kardashians do it.

Getting mad about how someone who doesn't even know you exist's hair is the peak of first world problems

I'll say it every time people get triggered over non-black people wearing traditionally black hairstyles.

You don't own a hairstyle and you never will. People can do whatever they want with their own hair. No race has the right to dictate what other people wear.

Could never be me wasting energy like Woke Twatter

i rly don't think that last k net was being racist, i think they have a point because it seems like everything is cultural appropriation no matter what, it's safer 2 just not touch anything at all from black culture in his mind. this picture is harmless and there is this much backlash? i don't blame him for thinking that

the whole cultural appropriation concept is stupid and ppl in real like aren't going 2 care if they see white ppl wear Jamaican clothes or hairstyles, like one comment said, most Jamaican ppl don't even care.

It's why I explained it that way.

getting negged for simply explaining what it actually is.

Do I think this is cultural appropriation? No. Adele stated what it was for.

the Chinese New Years episode from Fresh Off the Boat is also a good portrayal of cultural appropriation vs appreciation.

I honestly have no idea what culture appropriation actually is because EVERYTHING is deemed as culture appropriation.

It's when you take something from another culture and try to pass it off as something quirky or aesthetic that members of that culture would get mocked or discriminated for especially in Western countries like the US. Like for example, black Americans historically get turned down from job positions even when they have all the qualifications just because of their natural hairstyles, but a white person wearing box braids or dreads is suddenly considered "trendy" and "exotic." And that's really how the concept of cultural appropriation started in the first place--the hypocrisy in attitude from society.

Most people were not even outraged. You had black Americans who thought she looked silly, and made jokes. You had black Americans who did not care. You had black Americans who found it questionable because it is a trigger for us, as white women have often worn black hairstyles as a joke or as some sort of mock-blackness costume. And then you have literally every non-American black person who were upset at black Americans for making it a thing.

Legit all of my friends were just making jokes. No one was offended but they don't speak for all Black Americans.

I understand that but you need to fix that in YOUR country instead of being annoying to people that’s dont even care about the US, if I want to shave my head I will because ITS MY FREAKING HAIR, y’all annoying at this point, the same thing can be said when people bitch at kpop idols for hair and shit, y’all annoying and need to stop mirroring your problems in other people, specially with hair, y’all don’t own hair and don’t have any way to bitch about it, hair is hair and all cultures had pretty much done it

They never even said that they were annoyed by it, they were just explaining what cultural appropriation was! Why are you attacking them directly when they were just explaining what cultural appropriation is as they understand it? Why are you acting like that user is actually being offended? I know that person IRL and they think a lot of the CA accusations these days are actually overblown.

Plus that user you're replying to is ASIAN, not even black, so why are you even using y'all towards that person?

Where did I say I was annoyed? The person I quoted literally asked what cultural appropriation even was and I explained it in the most neutral and educational way possible and how the concept came about in the first place. I don't know why the fuck y'all are using the clown emote on me for literally saying almost the exact same thing that Your Biggest Fan and rananicole are saying. What's the point of even asking about something if you don't even want to hear the answer? Also, I'm Asian, why would black hair issues affect me?
