Apink’s Eunji Revealed Idols Starve Themselves To The Brink Of Death Preparing For Comebacks

She legitimately thought she could’ve died.

A “successful” weight loss transformation is a hot issue with every girl group’s comeback, especially in the summer. So the already-slim female idols in the K-Pop scene feel the need to go even skinnier, with some of the most extreme weight loss methods that, in the end, jeopardize their careers and health.

On an episode of tvN‘s Life Bar, Apink‘s Eunji talked about the brutal reality that K-Pop girl group members have to face when it comes to weight — that no matter how much weight they have shed already, there is more to be lost.

Apink’s Eunji received a lot of “fat shaming” when she first debuted. As a result, she felt the need to rely on pills to reduce her appetite so that she could drop in sizes.

Eunji began taking more than the suggested dose of the anorectics, hoping to speed up the weight loss process. As a result, she suffered severe depression.

"I got all the wrong information and tried losing weight the fast way. Eventually, the intense weight loss caused me to lose my voice and become very unhealthy. I couldn’t sing for months. I ended up getting severely depressed. That was a really hard time for me."

Of course, Eunji isn’t the only one that went through an intense weight loss to learn the lesson the hard way. TWICE‘s Momo also talked about her “lose 15 pounds in 7 days” plan.

On a live broadcast, Momo explained she almost died trying to meet the “weight standard” of a debuting girl group. Because the agency requested that she lose 15 pounds before the showcase stage, Momo decided to quit eating and drinking for a week.

"I stopped eating. I stopped drinking. I didn’t even swallow my own spit because I thought it would add to the weight. When I went to bed, I lay down and thought I might not be able to wake up the next morning. I couldn’t help but cry… I worried that I might not get up after falling asleep. I was so scared."

For girl group members, eating disorders are no surprise. When Oh My Girl‘s JinE was diagnosed with anorexia from the pressure to maintain a “presentable weight” as an idol, she decided to leave the group to take care of herself, both physically and mentally. Fans supported JinE’s way to recovery and became aware of the toxic pressure for these celebrities to be unreasonably thin.

Unfortunately, many Korean netizens don’t see this as a serious problem. In fact, some even believe it is only a small price to pay for the money these stars end up making.

Comments:

1. No one asked you to be a girl group. If you can’t handle the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

2. You get paid unimaginable amounts of money to be that skinny though. Just suck it up.

3. Hey, I’d gladly starve myself to the brink of death if I got paid what these girls get paid.

4. Looking good is a part of the job that you chose… You can’t complain when you chose to go down this path.

5. Why are they complaining? They weren’t forced. They chose to do so. Why are they complaining???

The knetz in that article are so materialistic and heartless yikes
Even if they starve themselves to death
they'll never debut (edit: or they'll be cancelled after debut) with that kind of attitude

I remember when eunji lost a lot of weight during mr.chu era... I was so worried I have never seen her like this before. same with chorong in 2013 when she started getting depressed/in a bad mood, it was obvious it was because of her extreme diet

Sort of surprised by this. I'll admit I always thought Eunji was one of the idols that had a healthy diet. And assumed she had a healthy workout routine too. She was one of the idols who started doing the pilates when it was a trend. Always posting photos.

At the same time, as someone who followed Apink in their early years when they made their 'No No No' comeback all of them had noticeably slimmed down by quite a bit. I remember knetz talking about it too. Praising them by how much their visuals had improved. Also remember some of them thinking Chorong had PS.

what on earth are these comments..

same old knetz being ugly

anytime idols talk about their problems or issues, knetz always have to bring up money and fame, as if that's the only thing that matters in life...

I always saw Eunji (and Momo) as one of the idols with the healthiest bodies, and it's sad to know what was going behind. If these girls felt like that, I can't imagine how bad it's for the already skinny ones that lose heavy amount of weight.

Also not surprised at the knetz reactions but it's funny how users here get shocked when a few days ago some were writing comments with the same sentiments about Kyla's body. And the comments got upvoted too. Disgusting

Im not surprised, because even if you're thin, you look heavier on camera. I don't think they should have included how she lost the weight either.

The comments are delusional to think your health is a small price to pay for the tiny chance of success, but it's not that different from other paths to success.

i gained some weight during quarantine and i was watching some korean diet vlogs on the internet and i was absolutely shocked with what i saw. the amount of people promoting eating disorders is... insane. most of these girls were consuming like 500-600 calories a day AND working out and everyone in the comments was praising them for their discipline. i was so scared, it was definitely triggering for me

This is the sad reality of the business :(. Most of them attain their figure by slaving themselves to unhealthy diet because of pressure. They are amplified by what majority of Korean view as the beauty 'standard', they are shallow and i dont see it changes anytime soon.
