not who you quoted but since i'm also from the US...why not lmao

it largely depends on your school district; there's no federal mandate for when schools have to teach certain things or whether they have to teach it at all.  that usually comes down to the state's choice or even the district itself.  i know some schools that start in 7th grade (around 12 to 13 years old) but my own school didn't offer foreign language courses until 9th grade (14 to 15 years old).

also for most schools there's only a 2 year-ish requirement and then you're free to go.  i studied spanish for four years because i liked it but the class size definitely decreased a LOT by year 3 and especially year 4.

Depends on what type of school you go to. Some start as early as elementary while others 12-13 years old. It's not required at every school either.

The biggest issue is many language teachers are not that great. Or more like not much funding and support for the department.  You'll often hear  Americans say they took a language like Spanish for years in school yet still know basically nothing.

The teachers are a lot better in university. But by then it's a lot harder to learn a language. Tho I still know more Korean then Spanish.

Its so odd to me, by 7th grade it gets alot harder to learn languages, I wonder why they won't start at 1st to 3rd grade like ours o.o I mean due to type of language we speak its hard for us to learn English or German or etc, bcs its closer to Japanese but still we start learning alot earlier and I found it more helpful in long term o.o

Its a shame most see it as a requirement tho, learning a new language is a beautiful thing, I often regret not being able to learn German properly in school rip

i was curious bcs we start learning at 1st grade to 3rd grade

It can be as early as kindergarten sometimes as well

Still 12-13 is not too late but it is probably too hard  to learn after those ages

If Spanish is too hard to teach for the state, why not try another language? For structure I found out German is very close to English, some schools can give a try to that o.o still waiting till uni, it should be pretty hard to learn after that point rip

Most schools that offer language courses do usually have more then one option. Spanish is one of them at every school tho. Like I said in my earlier post, it's beneficial in the US considering the population. Also it's usually the most popular pick by students and parents because of this.

Not matter what language it is still doesn't change the lack of good teachers and funding.

Hm instead of many options ,then they might try spending their fundings on raising actually proper teachers o.o i noticed with language tho, majority is things you have to do yourself. I didn't learn English from my teachers (only got base from them) , i learnt it from books I read at my free time. Only blaming teacher is bit wrong for language courses I think o.o I'm sure teachers lack too, but majority of the effort should be from student, that effort is not possible when everyone starts learning it so late T^T unless they have special love for that specific language
