just checked and oh wow, after the huge difference in ratings between Produce 101 season 2 vs season 1 i figured a show featuring boy groups would draw more viewers. Anyway im not really buying the "difficulty in casting" since with covid19 groups aren't going ANYWHERE besides the internet to do promotions outside of tv.

the ratings in queendom and rtk weren't that different actually. Except for one episode, queendom's ratings were all below 1% too:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queendom_(TV_series)#Ratings

But yeah, in queendom at least the ratings were closer to 1% (average of 0.7 or 0.8) while RTK stayed mostly in the 0.4-0.5 range. Also, the groups in queendom were all pretty popular while the groups in RTK were basically nugu except for Pentagon and maybe The Boyz so obviously popular groups draw more viewers than "nugus".

I kinda expected it tho. Because unlike in queendom there's not many non big3/big hit boygroups that are popular enough to be in kingdom, at least not in Korea. I only can think of Seventeen and NU'EST, and maybe seniors like BTOB or Teen Top but they're enlisted or barely active. The rest of potential groups that could go (Monsta X, Astro, SF9, ATEEZ, etc) are more RTK material because they're either still rising or are just popular internationally so...

Mnet’s “Kingdom” Won’t Be Broadcast In 2020, Here’s Why

original: Ilgan Sports

It won’t be happening.

Mnet‘s comeback war variety show Kingdom will not be broadcast in 2020 due to issues with their casting lineup and criticism of favoritism.

According to an exclusive report from Ilgan Sports on July 29, it is unlikely Kingdom will be broadcast in the second half of 2020 due to several problems. One of these issues is the lineup. The production team has had to revise their lineup for the show several times, as they are attempting to keep their lineup secret, unlike Road to Kingdom.

"When we did Road to Kingdom, many of our artists for the lineup were revealed in advance. We will try to prepare our lineup more carefully." — Road to Kingdom CP Park Chan Wook

However, it is extremely difficult to have secrets when casting groups for a show like this and in fact, rumors have spread surround the groups that will appear on Kingdom, and their agencies have received several inquiries about the validity of the rumors.

Due to the nature of the show, there was also a lot of burden for the artists themselves, as the show is a competitions ranking the idols against themselves. Agencies had to actually persuade their artists to appear on the show, and the agencies also had to pay for the huge production costs for their high-quality stages.

Another issues that arose was how Mnet is showing favoritism, especially on Road To Kingdom with their group TOO. TOO was on the show before ever debuting, competing against five year veteran group PENTAGON. Recently at their showcase, TOO acknowledged how their public recognition has increased, likely due to Road to Kingdom. This issue is again popping up for the Kingdom artist lineup, where groups that have members that were on Mnet audition programs are being forced to join the show. Rumors are flying that there have been a series of complaints about CJ ENM prioritizing the groups it invests in.

The final issue is that Road to Kingdom simply was not as successful as its predecessor, Queendom. While Road to Kingdom was highly watched by the fans of the groups on the show, it failed to gain any recognition from the general public. Agencies are concerned about whether Kingdom will follow the same path as Road to Kingdom in viewer ratings. All of these issues are why Kingdom may not happen in 2020.

"I heard about the story of Kingdom. From what I understand, it won’t be happening this year." — Insider

"The organization of the show Kingdom has not yet been confirmed." — Mnet

Isn't this contradictory tho? First it says TOO gained public recognition through the show but then that the groups failed to gain any public recognition. I mean, queendom obviously had more impact but it's not like the ratings itself were much higher. Like I said, queendom had an average of 0.7-0-8 in most episodes and RTK 0.4-0.5 and that considering most of them were nugu groups unlike in queendom.

No it's not contradicting.

Yes, overall the show barely had any public recognition. However that doesn't change the small amount of public recognition it did gain and the amount each individual group gained.

By the way, this isn't just something the journalist made up, TOO itself apparently said it at their recent showcase.

I didn't say the journalist made it up tho, just that I find kinda contradicting that TOO themselves admitted they won public recognition but then it says the show didn't have ANY public recognition. In any case they should've phrased it like "it gained little public recognition" but saying "any" is basically saying nobody watched the show and that neither of the groups benefited from it.
