Why are you making this about race? No one said anything about race. It's completely irrelevant. This is about an idea. BTS is the musical equivalent of SPAM. It's already been cooked long before you ever got your hands on it, all you have to do is pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to make it presentable... or at least as presentable as SPAM can get. Is this what people do? I wouldn't know, SPAM seems rather disgusting. Almost as disgusting as pretending your oppars are revolutionary and not just New Kids on the Block singing in a different language. Which one's Donnie Wahlberg?

Because in this case it's VERY relevant. Not just race but being a foreigner too.

The U.S music indusrty is notorious for discrediting POC artists. But that's a conversation for another day haha...

Actually it would of been a lot better if TIME would of mentioned a few POC artists, in my opinion. Of course there would of still been some disagreement, but overall the reaction might of been a bit better. Honestly TIME knew very well what they were doing when they used the words "paved the way". However they probably didn't expect the negative reaction from other Western journalist and people too. TIME said something foolish, and they've corrected it. Good.

They didn't say anything foolish, they just rustled the feathers of a bunch of sensitive children by stating facts, and have since retracted those facts under pressure like the cowards they are. And you can try all you want to make this about race, it still isn't. Yes, being East Asian probably makes breaking into the US more difficult than it would be for a group of white guys. But you know what's an even bigger impediment to BTS reaching mainstream success in the US? The fact that they're Johnny-come-latelies in a market where the whole boy band fad came and then died out two whole decades ago. But hey, maybe they can appeal to some older people's nostalgia for manufactured bubblegum pop groups. Ya never know. SPAM supposedly has a pretty long shelf life.

It's foolish, and TIME corrected. Next.

Exactly, there are more barriers for artists who are not white working in the US music industry. For BTS specifically, being Asian and foreign, and singing mainly in a foreign language is even worse lol xD

Last part is irrelevant to the conversation. The point still remains - there was basically a non-paved dirt road when BTS entered the US market representing Kpop.

Of course. Because, as everyone already knows, Kpop is a unique & fascinating phenomenon the likes of which Americans have never seen or heard before.

Oh wait...

Industry B being influenced by Industry A doesn't mean Industry A necessarily wants Industry B artists entering their market. There are barriers in place for a reason. Of course doesn't mean Industry B will not try to break some of them.

I never said K-pop was some special phenomenon. Music industries from all over the world are influenced by one another. I already said Kpop is part of this too.

Still the point remains - when BTS entered the US market the road was basically a non-paved dirt one (from Korea to US). There were many barriers and still are..

You'd think someone would've gone ahead and paved the road after the first billion people had traversed it. Talk about poor infrastructure planning.

I mean, we all know Psy was basically a one-hit joke for the US industry and public. He wasn't taken seriously as an artists. But yea it would of been awesome if the infrastructure was better for Korean artists before BTS entered.

Anyway since Joey Fatone was brought up he had some advice for BTS!

"The advice is stay together," he says. "Keep going, and know that there’s other projects that you can definitely do, but if you ever do that, separate, take a break, and then come back."

Comparing the road to success with BSB and N Sync to BTS is a bit of a stretch. Yes, those two boy bands have made it possible for all of these boy bands to explode and to have a market BUT BTS (and One Direction) paved their own way like BSB and N Sync did before them. Like New Kids On The Block did before them. Like every boy band that came out before them did also.

There isn't a one size fits all for any music act. Every artist is influenced by another like Limp Bizkit was influenced by Korn but Korn did not pave the way for Limp Bizkit and Deftones. They paved their own way and their own direction.

It's like saying Marilyn Manson paved the way for all of these shock rockers like Mudvayne, Slipknot and others even though they all existed before him. No he didn't. Before him was Alice Cooper. Before Alice Cooper there was Screamin Jay Hawkins. Each of those three paved their OWN way. Influence doesn't mean a road was paved for that person.
