TIME Makes Changes To Controversial BTS Bookazine

They have re-edited the bookazine to address fans’ concerns.

TIME is making changes to a special edition bookazine after receiving backlash from BTS fans.

Earlier this week, TIME opened pre-orders for TIME BTS: The K-Pop Band that Conquered the World in partnership with the publisher Meredith. Fans criticized the bookazine’s cover design, pointing out the high saturation and composite group photo that was pieced together from other BTS press photos. Some even doubted that the bookazine was an official publication.

In response, TIME assured fans that TIME BTS: The K-Pop Band that Conquered the World is in fact legitimate and will be released at the end of the month.

In addition to the cover, fans took issue with factual errors, such Jimin being called by Suga‘s name…

…a section on Jin‘s upcoming military enlistment, and TIME’s claim that Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC “paved the way for BTS”.

TIME and Meredith have since re-edited the bookazine to correct errors, address fans’ concerns, and they have removed the sentence that mentioned Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.

BTS previously appeared on the cover of TIME magazine as “Next Generation Leaders” in 2018. The following year, they were named one of TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2019.

For starters, western boy groups didn't pave any way for Bts or any Kpop group. There are many barriers Bts and other poc artists are still trying to break

Second, at least do some research and write about the artists that actually influenced Bts. there's a whole 'Hip hop lover' that exist which list many of the Hip hop artists that influenced their early music. The members have also talked about other artists throughout the years who have impacted them too. including those from Korea too.

compared to 2018 the cover for this issue is downright TRAGIC

Also trying to give Backstreet and NYSNC credit for BTS's achievements is like saying Beethoven paved the way for Taylor Swift. K-pop has its own rich history of boybands dating back to the 90s and the idea of a group of boys driving girls crazy is a concept that goes as far back as the Beatles.

the cover looks terrible and i question how on earth it was even deemed acceptable, i hate looking at it. also, the part about backstreet boys and NSYNC paving the way for BTS is just.. ridiculous. how out of touch can these writers and editors be? i feel like not even people who dislike them would attempt to claim such a thing lmao, it's outlandish.

can't say this is unexpected though, low-effort shit like this always gets made about successful groups so publishers can make easy cash while they still have the hype. it's a cycle

Magazines like this only do this to make a quick buck. They did this with BSB, N Sync, One Direction, etc. with those "unauthorized" books and magazines full of misinformation. It's all to make money in the end sadly.

Yea the fandom know it's just for money. The fact Western journalists consider making money off of BTS like other popular Western groups is impressive on it's own, and very telling of BTS popularity. However this was probably the worse case from the different unauthorized content BTS has been included for. So I guess more fans felt the need to speak up lol >< At least TIME will make some changes...

This thread is a great example of why no one likes BTS fans. Soon they'll graduate from pretending BTS (and all other kpop boy bands) didn't blatantly copy the American boy band formula, to claiming they invented both boys and bands (while technically not even being the latter.) Unreal.🤣

It's all coming together now. At first I thought you were just naive or maybe just some troll in the other threads. But nah you just have a hate boner for Armys and BTS. You're obsessed. So much so that you don't even realize how ridiculous you sound right now. You're missing the entire point. Everyone can see how tragic this entire piece is, you don't have to be a fan of BTS to see that. But whatever carry on. There's no point even having a conversation with you since its BTS.🙃

It's not nearly as tragic as your laughable denial of the obvious. You want so badly for BTS to be this groundbreaking innovation, when there's actually nothing even remotely original or novel about them. The only thing I have a hate boner for is delusional "stans" like yourself.

Never try to sell a product to kpop fans by claiming their success was paved by someone else in the product you are selling. Leave the “xx paved the way” shit to twitter arguments.

This is such bad marketing on every front. All they had to do was make it pretty and praise BTS a bunch and Armys would have bought it.

It's TIME Magazine, not Tiger Beat. They should be trying to uphold their reputation for serious journalism, not pandering to teenyboppers and telling them what they want to hear.

Still missing the point. If you truly believe that these two specific white boy groups paved the way for Kpop groups in the US, then again there is no point talking to you lol. Once again you're so blind by your own hatred that you can't even see that this whole thing isn't just about BTS. Armys in most cases are not the only ones speaking up in these debates, there usually always other industry people involve who agree with us. Reminder: TIME didn't have to change their description~ 😉

They didn't pave the way for kpop groups in the US. They helped pave the way for their very existence. Kpop wouldn't have boy bands if the American music industry didn't create the entire concept of a boy band. What part of this painfully obvious fact do you not understand? 🤔

"They didn't pave the way for Kpop groups in the US." Exactly.

"They helped pave the way for their very existence." LMFAO.

"Music groups" are not a concept that Americans created solely themselves. Yes, American groups are more popular worldwide but let's not discredit other countries. One example: Jpop groups is also huge influence on the Kpop industry and it's so called "existence". The music industry in many countries are basically set up for "domestic" groups to do well. In America specifically white artists have always had it easy. The whole "breaking barriers" in the industry exists for a reason. NSYNC and Backstreet Boys success didn't pave or do anything to help make things easy for Korean pop groups or really any POC artists in the US.

Why are you making this about race? No one said anything about race. It's completely irrelevant. This is about an idea. BTS is the musical equivalent of SPAM. It's already been cooked long before you ever got your hands on it, all you have to do is pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to make it presentable... or at least as presentable as SPAM can get. Is this what people do? I wouldn't know, SPAM seems rather disgusting. Almost as disgusting as pretending your oppars are revolutionary and not just New Kids on the Block singing in a different language. Which one's Donnie Wahlberg?

I get it, for SOME people it's difficult to admit, give credit and recognize BTS has help make things a little easier for other Kpop groups entering the US market. I guess, it's probably hard hearing even American Asians praising BTS. But again don't let one's hate boner for Armys blind thee from the realities of the U.S. music industry.
