So... Do you think kpop gg gen is entering its final stage

With sexy concept coming back again?

Similarly to 2nd gen we got the cute/innocent era followed by girl crush/bad girl era and with Monster and Apple as releases from major players (groups) we seems to be entering sexy/sensual era once again.

Which will most likely bring rise to new cute, fresh, innocent gen in like a year or two.

Hm...

Or do you think the intl popularity of kpop will limit it to concepts which are west friendly?

Wish we got bops like Loving you, Heart attack, Something etc again.

I kinda do think so. It's actually quite disturbing cause to me it still seems like yesterday when the generation shift to the 3rd gen took place. Time flies. I expect a new gen too come up in the next three years.

On the other hand the 3rd gen ggs like twice, red velvet, etc. Enter their "queen era" as the cemented dominators of kpop industry and I love it. Concepts are getting more elegant and exquisite.

Like other people have said cute/fresh, girl crush/badass and sexy/sensual concepts have always coexisted. For example:

Cute/Fresh: OMG's Nonstop, Weeekly's Tag Me, Cignature's Nununana

Girl crush: Basically most Mamamoo/Blackpink/Gidle/Everglow/ITZY releases, Loona's So what

Sensual/Mature: Irene&Seulgi's Monster (plus some RV's velvet releases), Gfriend's Apple, A Pink's releases since I'm so sick

And it's not only these 3 concepts. WJSN and Izone do magical/fantasy concept (Twice's More&More kinda falls into this category too), Weki Meki/Cherry Bullet/Rocket Punch are "teen crush" (that mix of cute and girl crush), Dreamcatcher has a dark fantasy concept, Nature's last concept was dark/horror, etc. There's a lot of variety nowadays, actually.

Can't say. If Yukika has anything to say it's City Pop finding its way into the heart of K-Pop fans. I'd say her concept is "sweet and innocent".

A sneak-peak medly of her debut album "Soul Lady" coming out tomorrow.

Oh my GOD I hadn't listened to it yet but every track sounds very promising. Shade in particular sounds AMAZING, I'm so excited!!

Mamamoo

I think it's a little unfair to lump Mamamoo and the girl crush groups together. They only have like 3 title tracks in their entire discography that are a little close to "girl crush" (Egotistic, Gogobebe and Hip)

And that's being very generous because Gogobebe is not even girl crush? Like how. That's just Mamamoo's sound. I don't see it badass or dark enough to be girl crush. It reminds me of their 2016 songs.

And I see elemements In Loona So What, Gidle, Everglow, Itzy, BP, etc that I can't see in Hip. If you listen to girl crush songs like WJSN Catch Me, Cherry bullet Hands Up, CLC songs, you can find common sounds and so many clitches in the MVs that I just don't see in Hip.

Hip is tougher than previous songs but I don't see it as classic and proper Girl Crush.

Also difficult to offer a Girl crush image releasing a MV like Gleam and promoting Waggy and Ten Nights, especially the former.

Honestly, I didn't know how to categorize them. I lumped them in the girl crush category because they always give off this strong, fierce and empowered image but it's true their MVs usually don't have typical girl crush elements like CLC, BP, G-idle, Loona, ITZY, Everglow, etc. But at the same time their concepts aren't cute either, or magical/fantasy or even sexy/sexual, so I guess mature in general? Idk how to define their style tbh.

@hynapia You're right, Mamamoo do give off strong, independent, and feminist vibes. Mamamoo do target female audiences but it's a bit different then the other "girl crush" groups you listed. The typical "girl crush" we know in Kpop seems to be meant for targeting young school girls. So elementary kid and teenagers. While Mamamoo concepts are more for college to older women. Of course, any one can like whatever music they like, but still base on the lyrics and MV concepts Mamamoo is  definitely showing more mature imagery. @Gerimolda

I know it's difficult to clasify them in so many levels tbh 😅 But I don't think they need to be put in a box. The thing that in my opinion makes them a little different from most idol groups is that they don't stick to a pre-existing concept. They are just Mamamoo.

I feel it depends on which groups or generation one is following.

Most young girl groups are usually going to start off with young concepts. Such as, cute, innocent, teen crush, bubble pop, or girl crush(targeting teens). As they get older they tend to mature also. Right now the 3rd gen groups, like Twice, Red Velvet, Gfriend and etc. are maturing and experimenting so of course to those who follow mostly them it might feel and look like the industry is only maturing. But in fact that's not the case. There are still young groups too entering the market. Weeekly, Woo!ah!, ITZY and etc. Then there are groups still in that in between phase. WJSN, fromis_9, etc.

The Kpop industry is one big cycle. Forever on-going. New groups with young concepts are always debuting and eventually everyone matures.

I was talking more about general trend in the industry then newly debuted groups going sexy route. Even in 2013 it was mostly already debuted groups who switched concepts. Neither Girls Day or AOA or Exid (or hell even Stellar) were debuted to do sexy concept. The generation of idols and fans simply grew to it. They switched to it and find success through it.

yall really think they are about to debut idols in their early 20s?  That's the only way they can get away with sexy in this current social climate, and I highly doubt that will happen.

It isnt about debuting groups but groups who are already in the industry like what happened before. So yeah 20+ girls.
