Interesting article about Dangal here , the site does have ads just so you know. http://thediplomat.com/2017/07/bollywood-conquers-china-not-quite/.

I don't agree with everything but I think I do think having box office successes from other countries apart from America is good for the Chinese market. Sometimes it's in danger of becoming basically Hollywood 2.0 especially as the rules on foreign imports get more and more relaxed.

I personally prefer the old strict rules as it did help protect Chinese movies and ensure the market wasn't dominated by Hollywood, but if that can't be maintained, a more balanced box office with hit movies from different countries and cultures is the next best thing.

Obviously it remains to be seen if this is a one off that just struck the right tone and also needs to be more than just India and U.S but its a start.

It remains to be seen what Bollywood can do in China, but in recent years the only Bollywood movies to be popular there are 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal, and all three have Aamir Khan lol! 3 Idiots is especially a cult as well as a hit, even though it's supposedly not shown in cinemas there. Because of rampant piracy (still) in China, (almost) everybody there knows 3 Idiots.

Of course but after Dangal made so much money it's going to encourage more Bollywood movies to make a push towards or try to specifically target China's market. Whether it will fail like a lot of the America/China collabs who knows but Bollywood does bring something else to the table so its a good thing IMO.

Yes, and the shared values (family, love, friendship) between the 2 countries (where in Indian movies justice and goodness as the endgame are very much preferred/encouraged) are bridging the gap even more (despite the musicality of Bollywood movies), compared with Hollywood blockbusters.

Wait. You didn't see family, love and friendship in Transformers 5?

I haven't seen Transformers 5 lol.

But I'm just going about the reasons when Chinese viewers were interviewed about why they like Dangal so much.

Since everyone is talking about movies.....holy shit @ Wolf Warriors 2. I always felt there is not enough new Chinese action stars, kudos to Wu Jing who went from getting small villain roles to starring and directing the highest grossing movie in Chinese history. I mean with so many Shao Lin discipes, why is there such a lack of young martial arts stars? All the well known ones are way past their prime, we are in desperate need of some young blood with some actual skills.

With the bombing of The Great Wall and huge success of this home grown action flick, I wonder what changes we will see in the movie industry there. Already reading articles about Hollywood studios rethinking their strategy for joint flicks that appeal to both audiences to instead create Chinese movies for Chinese audiences.

Thoughts? I know Yang Yang has classical chinese dance training but does anyone know if LYF did any sort of dance before?

Yes, she does have a dance background

Great Wall didn't really bomb in China though or internationally. The problem was appealing to American audiences. On the whole hollywood blockbusters do great in China so I think they'd just focus on those instead of Chinese movies for Chinese audiences made by americans lol or more mixes between the two.

Personally I think Great wall had some big flaws but I did enjoy seeing great actors like Andy Lay and Matt Damon share the same screen so I hope there are still some cross overs.

Hi!

Some recent stuff i like and didn't see anybody post anywhere

Wu Jing's acting has always been over the top and kinda shit. That's why he's never taken off even though his fighting is pretty good. I'll watch this movie tho. Zhang Jin (Max Zhang) is the guy i think could be a star but they keep giving him supporting/bad guy roles instead of lead roles.

No but i was thinking about starting it or Lui Shi Shi's drama.

edit:

oh i just saw that Wong Kar Wai has signed on to direct a show on Amazon. That's cool. Japan has been making deals with netflix and hulu and stuff recently for drama series and now this.

No, is it any good? Personally I think Di Li Re Ba shouldn't act in serious roles... So I gave it a pass.

Funny you should say that. I don't think her acting is bad as such, the problem is she doesn't seem to fit in the time period. It feels more like she's a modern girl who ended up in the past by accident. Which would probably make for a better show actually.

If you can survive the first few episodes it does get better though and eventually got used to it. It helps that I'm a fan of hers though.

Weibird (Wei Li An 韋禮安) performing at the New Year's Eve concert in Taipei. He's such a great singer songwriter.

Eve Ai also performed at this event but I think she sounded awful, so I'm not posting that lol. You can find it on the same channel if you are interested...
