What is the biggest streaming service in China? And by streaming service I mean something similar to Spotify.

Are western artists allowed to put their music on the service?

Kugou and QQMusic are the two most popular. It's similar to Spotify in that it is a streaming service, however on the whole many songs are still downloadable for free and or are tied to a VIP subscription service which is very affordable compared to Spotify. And I mean DRM free downloadable so you get the MP3 to keep as long as you wish. It is geo blocked in most countries outside of China for this very reason.

There are artists from all over the world on there, however in recent years they have become more strict with licensing deals and so some songs are only available for streaming and not download or listed but cannot be played if the company hasn't received permission from the record label.

The lack of permission rights is more prominent with Japanese and American artists (the most prominent example being Taylor Swift who pulled all of her music from Chinese music services a couple of years ago but has since made deals to make it available again) but does happen with some mandopop artists too, especially from Taiwan, which has a more organised music label system on the whole than in China, so is more likely to go through official channels to remove unlicensed content etc.

This is quite a big deal as the Chinese market used to be more of a wild west in terms of downloading music with no real organisation or oversight. However there is a much better structure and communication between labels and the streaming services now. There are even promotions in conjunction with the label where the streaming service will advertise the new release and direct users to a link where they can pre order the physical album, this happened with one of the biggest singers in mandopop Jay Chou's most recent record.

If you want to learn more about music streaming options in China I'd suggest reading this article https://medium.com/@actallchinatech/screenshot-from-xiami-music-the-top-5-music-streaming-services-in-china-9a0bda889110

i downloaded and listened to the Twins album last night. It's ok. I was never a big fan of them tho. I prefer Charlene's solo stuff. Shiga Lin's new mini album is worth checking out though if you haven't already.

also new Eve Ai

Your Eve won best singer at the Golden Melody awards last night. Well deserved.

The more i listen to this song the more i think it might be my favorite song of the year so far. Such an unexpected collab but it works so well.

Nice. Didn't expect it because i thought that album was kinda safer compared to the previous one.

Man I'm still sad about Chinese streaming sites being blocked outside of China. I had a glorious few years with them rlytearpls.png

those good old days where you could stream western music, cpop, jpop, and kpop for free all on one site T__T

Time to start buying CDs haha.

Seriously though, I know how you feel. Although it has got better with more songs being made available internationally there's still long way to go though.

In my opinion. Music shouldn't be geo locked anywhere, it can be enjoyed worldwide even when people dont understand it and reach so many people in a positive way. This site is basically built around people enjoying music from other countries after all.

Why?

I've been coming here less and less over the last 2 years or so. Basically after i stopped modding. I tried to start posting more regularly here and there but a lot of the time i'd rather lurk now. It's a combination of generally losing interest (not in asian entertainment, just the forum) and being annoyed by posts and users. (not here as in this thread or even this section lol)

I've been here since H8 like most of us here i think. Idk just after modding things started to annoy me more and more. Things have changed. The forum isn't as fun or friendly anymore. It's something i've always heard while i was a mod, that the forum has gotten way more toxic over time, and that stuff used to entertain me but now i don't want to be around it during my free time.

Twitter can't compare to forums, you know that.

Even if the vibe has changed in some sections, you need positive posters to help reverse that and bring balance back, to set an example for new users and lurkers thinking about registering. If friendly and fun people leave then it really will take a negative turn. Its up to all of us to make this into the forum we want it to be.

If you need to take a break or you do decide to stop posting completely I'll understand but it would be a real shame to see you leave.

i've been taking breaks on and off for a while now lol.

anyway i didn't actually mean to make a big deal out of this. I basically only post in this section and the gaming one now and i already have some of the gaming section people on my psn friends list so i felt like saying something here.

Ah… the thread will definitely be a little more dead without you though. But I think I can understand what I mean about the forum, though I haven't been a part of it for nearly as long as you.

Hoping you think to come back here every once in a while though…

It's interesting to see that the biggest foreign thing to happen in China's entertainment industry this year is not Kpop or Kdramas or K-actors, but rather a Bollywood film brought by a middle-aged superstar (that is, if we don't count Hollywood movies smashing records left and right).

Yup. I've been tracking China's box-office starting this year (besides Hollywood and Japan's) and it's interesting to see how the movie keeps on getting the sales.

As of the most recent numbers it's made 1296576000 yuan which is about 191 million USD, making it the fifth highest this year.

Wow… that's… impressive

The synopsis makes it sound pretty badass so congrats.

Really? What are the numbers?

Here you go, at the moment: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/china/yearly/

For Hollywood movies, only The Fast and the Furious and Transformers are ahead of Dangal, while among Chinese movies, only Kung Fu Yoga and Journey to the West are above. 6-9 are Hollywood movies, and Chinese movie Duckweed comes at 10th so far this year.

Interesting article about Dangal here , the site does have ads just so you know. http://thediplomat.com/2017/07/bollywood-conquers-china-not-quite/.

I don't agree with everything but I think I do think having box office successes from other countries apart from America is good for the Chinese market. Sometimes it's in danger of becoming basically Hollywood 2.0 especially as the rules on foreign imports get more and more relaxed.

I personally prefer the old strict rules as it did help protect Chinese movies and ensure the market wasn't dominated by Hollywood, but if that can't be maintained, a more balanced box office with hit movies from different countries and cultures is the next best thing.

Obviously it remains to be seen if this is a one off that just struck the right tone and also needs to be more than just India and U.S but its a start.

I think the problem with the current Chinese box office, is that basically everything is a Journey to the West remake.  Originality is wearing thin, Chinese New Year movies dominate, because it's peak season to go watch movies... And really no one goes out of their way to watch yet another Journey to the West remake other times of the year.  I understand that Journey to the West was basically China's childhood, but still they don't need a thousand remakes.  You saw with the year Chinese movies actually lined up Chinese box office was that people like to watch other movies that aren't Journey to the West remakes.  They limited Romance of the Three Kingdom remakes because they were being excessive at one point and I really think they should implement it with Journey to the West.

Basically everything is a bit of an exaggeration, there's still plenty of other Chinese movies that came out this year but I get your point. I'm sure that will work itself out, either through a limit or choice once they stop making money.
