and Swordsman ... I don't know if you have seen the previous versions but for this one, like seriously, they changed the script so much that the writer literally changed whole plot of the story. With Dong Fang Bu Bai being a girl?! Although I do have to admit Joe is so gorgeous in the drama .. If only they cast her for Ren YinYin's role :\\ Ugh. Too many if's for that drama.

Anyhows, you should try Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Guai_Xia_Yi_Zhi_Mei). Jiang Hu subbed it and I love Jiang Hu's subs. They're pretty much on spot on the translations :)

I agree though. Honestly, I don't mind if they change the script to a certain extent, but in that version, it was changed to the point the series didn't feel like wuxia anymore,...more like a romance type of drama, which bothered me and a lot of JY fans. Not to mention the casting of RYY, the inconsistency and the poor editing. Only thing I enjoyed was LPZ's character.

Btw, the next wuxia drama to be released is probably the new version of TLBB, right? Kim Kibum is in it. He looks ridiculous.

^ It will air in July 6th through Dong Fang televison...that is if everything goes according to plan. Apparently, Dong Fang TV and Hunan TV are negociating whether they could air Da Mo Yao and the sequel of BBJX at the same period...

Anyone watching Legend of Luzhen? I've heard it's really good and it's been doing pretty well right now in China.

July 6th .... 2 more months .____, great. In time for summer I guess, lols.

And nope, not watching it, yet. But I've heard rave reviews about it too, especially for Chen Xiao's acting o: Gonna watch it after I'm done with GFB.

Yeah aparently it's doing pretty well mainly because of the OTP in it. I'm not too fond of Zhao Liying's acting but w/e I'm gonna watch it once I finish with my final tests...mainly because I'm actually an avid fan of CX lol.

Thanks! Yea, there's so many episodes for this show, which makes me not really want to watch it lol  :wut:

I recommend it. It's one of the best c-dramas I've watched. Imo better than BBJX. If you're more into realistic, intrigue, darker dramas, then it's worth watching the whole thing. It's pretty different from those typical idols dramas with sappy and sweet elements.

can you recommend a similar themed/style drama that has subs that doesn't make me want to throw my remote at the screen.

uh I know some dramas with similar style, but none of them are as good as Zhen Huan. For instance, Mei Ren Tian Xia, Mei Ren Xin Ji, Hou Gong (the one with Ady An), Mistery in the Palace, Mei Ren Wu Lei, etc. But I don't think all of them have eng subs, sorry :/

Speaking of C-dramas, have you guys read this article? http://cfensi.wordpress.com/2013/04/18/most-popular-cdramas-online-from-2009-onward/

Basically talks about the most popular online C-dramas from 2009 till now. I'm glad Zhen Huan made it first \o/ and BBJX 3rd. Why is the new HZGG 2nd though?  :donthinkso:

Just curious,

have you guys ever watched something that made you want to do research about it afterwards?

For me, this is something I do constantly when I watch historical/wuxia series.

Like for Lan Lin Wang, I've only heard about him briefly before in folklore tales when I was young but ever since this drama that's coming out in July, I have been very curious about him and have been researching about his story. And it turned out to be quite adventurous, Lan Lin Wang has a very interesting history if I have to say. Albeit, a tragic one.

Yep. I'd always research about the historical background whenever I watch historical series.

I was just doing it yesterday for Legend of Lu Zhen (already started watching it =p). Found out Gao Zhan was completely different from the drama (bad emperor). I failed to find the historical version of Lu Zhen...though it makes sense since a woman as prime minister at that time seems iffy.

i've heard many reasons for it but i found none of them to be legit. The stupidest one i've heard about why the actors can't self-dub was because they're busy and need to move onto their next project. Like have a bit of pride in your work and redub it yourself if dubbing is absolutely necessary for whatever reason.

in other news, Mandi just posted news in the j-turd that korea is doing a Nodame remake... :twitch:

*comes out of lurking* I've never heard of that one, lol. Basically, it has to do with dialects, budget issues and film equipment and outside noises. Producers hire many actors/actresses from various parts of the country where the dialects spoken are different from each other, so it's very hard for viewers to understand them. Voice acting normalizes or standardizes the speech by using a "standard", very clear and precise Mandarin. It's cheaper and saves a lot more money from good sound equipment because most ancient dramas have very limited budget. Also, ancient dramas are often filmed outside or in large, beautiful sceneries so, voice recording is hard, not to mention the film equipments used are loud and even if the actors dub their own voices, there will be clear noises from the background and no one wants that.

Dubbing isn't necessary and should be avoided for modern dramas, but I find it pretty useful for historical ones. I mean, hearing a contemporary sounding voice or a voice that doesn't fit with the historical character at all completely ruins the historical atmosphere for me. A lot of actors/actresses sound extremely strange and awkward doing historical speech (since MOST of them simply act with their usual ordinary contemporary voice accent) and I just don't like the oddity when characters don't properly carry the vibe of historical speech. It's much more preferable when a voice actor portrays the character properly, voice wise, rather the actor attempting to produce a lackluster historical speech. If you've seen the latest version of ROTCH, Huang Xiaoming did an extremely poor job with his own dubbing, most especially during the emotional scenes where he was required to cry/scream or let out his anger. Same case for Yang Mi in Ru Yi. Her dubbing was LIFELESS throughout the whole drama. I'd rather have professional voice actors do the job instead because at least they can bring the character itself to life. IMO, when it comes to voice acting, it should be the voice that most genuinely represents the character rather the voice that most genuinely represents the actor.

My biggest issue with dubbing however is when a good professional voice actor can cover up a bad actor. It's disappointing. The most preferable situation would be an actor who can portray the character well both visually and voice wise. Just my two cents ;P

I completely understand dubbing when it's unavoidable, like because of filming issues or sound problems and the actor isnt available, but when it stems from someone being cast with the intention of dubbing them its a whole different situation for me.

imo if the actor isnt good enough to portray the right accent for the role, they shouldnt be cast in it. That would be almost unheard of for a production in u.k or u.s afaik, like Robert Downey being dubbed for sherlock holmes british accent or dubbing someone who was cast in downton abbey because they couldn't put on the right accent for the time period. Its not only poor casting, but its also laziness either from the actor in training and researching the role, or the people who choose the cast and cant find the right actor for the role, both in terms of looks AND voice.

Can't disagree with that. But unfortunately, most of the current Mainland actors aren't skilled enough to portray the right accent for the given role, which is why voice acting is commonly used in Mainland dramas. And among many, this is one of the biggest flaws of the acting training process & industry in China. Film universities in China mostly train the students to act visually, rather than BOTH visually and sound wise, which is why PLENTY of actors lack of skill when it comes to voice acting. This is something the acting training process in China should improve on.

After watching Legend of the Ancient Sword (which I found quite decent enough for a fantasy drama imo), I've been debating on whether to watch Da Mo Yao or w/e the new title is called because Hu Ge's in it (but ugh 2nd lead?), but I'm kind of ehhh regarding the plot. Those who are following this drama, how is it so far?

Hemlock started the drama yesterday, and he's okay about the show (I think) ...

I'll be starting it tonighttt. Will post after I finish few eps~

@Alison, are you watching it?

From lurking... you enjoyed BBJX right? If you did I would say Sound of the Desert has very similar vibes.... but then again it's the same production company and the same author as well.... There are mixed reviews, some think it's slow.... Just remember to watch the uncut version if you do... Hunan cut out all of the good parts.

Omg, I forgot Tangren actually produced it. Not too fond of them..., but I'm going to give it a try. Hopefully, the slowness won't bother me that much...thanks guys.

Has anyone watched The White Haired Witch with Fan Bing Bing and if so can you tell me if its any good? Even though I like FBB, I dislike Huang Xiao Ming more so I need to know if its going to be worth putting up with him on screen...

I haven't watched it and I'm not planning to, but the reviews were mostly negative and HXM's acting is still as weak as ever.
