Favorite Studio Ghibli movie?

This is hard, each Ghibli movie is special in its own way

Spirited Away is the first one I saw from the studio and the most watched one too so yeah, it's probably my favourite. Followed by Princess Mononoke

Has to be Spirited Away for me.  There's just something so magical about it.  I like Howl's Moving Castle a lot, as other people itt have said, but I read the book first before I even knew it Studio Ghibli had adapted it so that's a different experience for sure.

I found out  it was a book after watching it and expected it to be different, but how is it different? (I haven't read it yet)

I've watched a lot of studio ghibli movies growing up, but Howl's moving castle made such a strong impression on me. Along with Ponyo because I loved the scene where she runs on the wave.

The main themes are really quite different.  The movie is centered around the war, which really isn't a large part of the book at all (much more focused on Sophie vs. the Witch of the Waste, who isn't that big a deal in the movie).  Also a lot of the side plots of the book were cut out or simplified in the movie (prob for time).  But really the biggest thing for me was just seeing the movie after I'd already read the book.  It's different seeing a story play out for the first time than seeing one play out that you already know.  Also, I came across the movie totally on accident.  When I was younger, I was just watching television, and some network was showing it, and as I was watching I just realized that, wait, I know this story!

But the book is really worth reading I think.  I read it when I was quite young, but iirc it should hold up for an adult reader pretty well.
