[enter-talk] I WAS SO SHOCKED BY MOMO WHEN THEY SANG THE ENCORE AT SHOW CHAMPION

Problem is the way they make her sing..just listen to her in the Taemin covers or Feel Special it suits her so much more. Besides that she outdances 99% of other female idols and dancing is an integral part of kpop idol industry. Again she is not a singer she is an idol. The trashing of her and twice vocals is so old already we have been through this since 2015 thousands of times. Most members have improved heaps since then but that's very rarely acknowledged.

How are you all defending this? Right, because kpop's musicality has deteriorated to the point that dancing is somehow considered just as valuable a skill as singing or rapping. This is music, not a fucking school talent show--they should be musicians. Clearly the fans of TWICE and other groups with subpar vocals don't know the difference.

I'm not disappointed because I've always accepted that TWICE had shit vocals to begin with. You can stan TWICE but don't make excuses for someone who wants to be considered a singer and have parts in songs when she can't sing and makes no effort to learn how to after years of training and performing. Vocalists like Momo, 3/4 of BTS's vocal line, and plenty of idols have no excuse for sounding like shit; even idols who are skilled vocalists like Baekhyun continue to go to vocal lessons. And don't blame JYP, she's a grown ass woman who has money and autonomy to at least get some lessons--Taemin was also similarly told he could never sing by SM's trainers and he went out of his way to learn.

You went off!!

Her position of being a main dancer isn't an excuse. As you said, she is an idol who SINGS. No one is expecting her to be an amazing singer but come on...

There are a number of idols who got in groups for their dance skills yet they have somewhat of a decent singing skills.

She sounded very nasal and completely out of tune but like other people have said, she's the main dancer and lbr, there's people that can't sing at all in all groups. At least she can do her role (main dancer) well. Also, she's sounded decently in other songs so maybe it wasn't her best day.

Hmmm I don't know...there are many Japanese people that do the same thing when talking. I think it could be culturally thing to sound cute.

Who are these "many Japanese people"? As someone who is learning Japanese and has taken a bit of Linguistics, the Japanese language is hardly even nasal to begin with, and having forward vowel placement is not the same as having a nasal tone.

it a faulty technique all weak vocalists place their voices in their nose , it has nothing to do with her being a Japanese

Some people on here really need to stop equating Japanese voices as being nasally because Aimer, Utada Hikaru, Sakurako Ohara, Mika Nakashima, MACO, Namie Amuro, Reina (from Flower), Ayaka, Ayumi Hamasaki, Maaya Sakamoto, and so on have anything but nasally singing voices.

a lot of japanese girls intentionally do the nasally voice because Japanese guys think it's kawaii.

it's literally part of their language.

they have nasalized constants and vowels.

some Japanese people probably don't realize how nasally they sound sometimes compare to other languages.

I'm on the fucking floor. These comments are insane. Even if you're a main dancer having some basic singing ability should be a prerequisite.

51 comments. Y'all must be desperate for some drama. Let's be honest, guys. This is kpop. No one is here for good vocals.

Speak for yourself. My fave can sing and I’m here for exactly that reason, along with several other fans.

And that one army in this thread defending any and everything about the bts members is embarrassing. Sis,  you need a life outside kpop

yep...in their B-side Make Me Go (which Nayeon wrote the lyrics for), Momo sounds so much better because, you know, they actually wrote her part to FIT her tessitura  (in singing, this term means the range in which a singer is most comfortable singing in). Same with Breakthrough. Also if anyone even remembered her singing on "Sixteen", she also sounded a lot better then because she intentionally chose songs that fit her own voice.

edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1y0qdFWLgo like don't tell me that there's no difference between her singing on the show Sixteen and the way she sings now. You can hear a huge difference in her singing from then vs. now. She wasn't as nasal back then.

Their only nasal consonants are m and n just like any languages in the world and nasal vowels do not fucking exist in Japanese like they do in French, their vowels are the same as Spanish. Again, I'm actually studying Japanese (even majored in it in college and took a Linguistics course in it), don't try to argue with me the language is nasally when it isn't. Kawaii talk =/= normal Japanese talk. Korean aegyo speech can often be nasally, too. Heck there are Koreans with nasally voices, too. And show me who in my list of Japanese singers has a "nasally" voice that you so think all Japanese people have.

She gets the least amount of lines along with the rappers for a reason.

Except she doesn't. But she obviously should. That's what gets me about her complete inability to sing. If she's there for her dancing ability, then let her dance, but don't make me listen to her.

I don't think nasal is Japanese language inherent tones. You don't even need to go to Japan to know this, just watch Japanese dramas or movies. I do observe that in real life the nasal voice is the tones that seems to be purposefully used by some female employees working in Japan in the service industries like restaurants, souvenirs shops, etc. Sometimes when some girls want to appear cute (like you see in some Japanese young female idols), they use the nasal voice too but that is not necessarily their normal/usual voice.

Don't blame Momo's vocal habits on Japanese language or Japanese people, there are many, many Japanese singers that don't have the habits or if they used their nose to sing used the correct techniques and sound beautiful. Either JYP doesn't train her right or the habits have just been too ingrained. She can always learn but maybe it's not her priority now.
