Probably so that he would have better chances at getting into university, he's already done the exam before so he would be better prepared and the grading criteria for first-time takers might be more lax than for retakes.

Really stupid of him to mention this in a live, but then again, if you're the kind of person to do what he did and then get away with it, maybe you were never a good or smart person to begin with.
