Was TWICE debut that bad?

i wouldn't say it did that bad but people had really high expectations since they're from jyp.  it debuted at number 22 on gaon's digital chart and peaked at number 10, around three months later.  compare that to miss a's debut song which peaked at number 1.

when it comes to youtube views, though, it did hold the record for most-viewed debut for a hot minute...and it was quite popular as a dance cover song, so it wasn't that overlooked.

No. I have stanned Twice since pre-debut and here is how it went pretty much, as someone who lived through it:

LOA debuted at #22, not bad but not good. People compared them to Miss A, so they said it flopped. The song began to drop super quickly - at one point LOA was mopping the floors of Melon, and hit #99 within a few days of debut. LOA was almost kicked out of the top 100.

But THEN, Twice started promoting. They promoted everywhere, , and it paid off. People started falling in love with the song and with Twice. The public loved their charisma, personalities, visuals, stages, etc. And the song went from the bottom of Melon and slowly rose up to enter top ten. It peaked at #7 at some point, which didn't last but it did stay in top 10 (#9-ish) for a good while. By the end of promotions it was one of the most hearted (hearts on chart) debut songs on Melon and even hit #1 on some random charts (Monkey 3).

So was it that bad? At first, yes. But when they started promoting and attending music shows, it did well. Overall, LOA definitely hyped them up and took their popularity to such a good level that when Cheer Up came out, they became superstars. Cheer Up made them super popular, but they were incredibly popular after/during LOA promotions too.

?? from what I remember, yeah quite a bit of folk were making fun of the group for not charting as high as they thought they would right off the bat, but LOA did climb back up the charts shortly after their promotion for it, before Cheer Up. Thus the brief but quick re-promotions with Candy Boy. So no. It wasn't bad by any metrics.

the reason why cheer up did so good is because LOA was going viral in korea

LOA ended up being the longest girl group charting debut song on melon I don't think one can claim twice struggled just because the song didn't do well until 2 months after their debut

No. The song just had to grow and reach the public unlike their other songs. It had to climb. Still a very successful song and I wouldn't be surprised if other twice title tracks did worse in the long run.

It should be said that Tzuyu's flag incident brought a LOT of attention to the group and the song, which made it soar up the charts

Not really, people attribute more importance to it than it actually had. The song was already rising and inside the top 20 on Melon before the whole thing really blew up with the kmedia, and they were scheduled to promote Candy Boy on MCD and LOA on Inki a week before her apology video happened. However, there was a spike in their album sales after the incident indeed.

Wow so Twice were flops at the start?  That actually makes their current status even more impressive.  Have they been accepted by China yet?

They weren't exactly flops tbh. They actually debuted at top 20, which means the public had some interest on them, but the problem is that the song started to drop and drop until hitting #99 at some point, but after many promotions the song went viral and climbed to top 10. I still remember the articles and knetz posts like "from #99 to #9". And it became the longest charting gg debut song on melon history.

That helped, but I remember LOA was already rising a lot before that happened too - it rose in its first two weeks of promotion, and the incident just pushed it to rise a lot faster. Her flag incident brought Tzuyu herself more individual attention than to Twice and LOA as a whole, and mostly got attention from China that SK, but yeah that definitely did play a role. I wouldn't say it was the primary factor for LOA and Twice popularity rising though. Definitely a big factor, but not the central one

Yeah, it had already been rising steadily but it helped it get another boost thanks to all the publicity.
