apparently people are saying this a response to all the sexual crimes that's been going on lately with young teenagers

i don't know if this is korean or international age, but nonetheless progress is good. i hope korea continues to update it laws to protect children and women.

what the actual fuck ? it was 13?  and has become what 16?  not fucking 18?

or am I misunderstanding something here

Most of the world has it at 15-16yo. 16 is old enough tbh. 13 was just way too low. Kids at 13 are just kids. Some of them just barely got hit by puberty.

nope, you're right

i did a quick google search, and there are more international articles now

Spoiler

"SOUTH KOREA -- South Korea has raised the age of consent for sex to 16 from 13 as it seeks to strengthen protection for minors following accusations the existing law on sex crimes was too weak.

Under the revised law, adults who have sex with under-16-year-olds will be prosecuted for child sexual abuse or rape regardless of any alleged consent.

Previously, teenagers aged 13 or older were held to be legally capable of consenting to sex, resulting in controversial cases and critics saying that sex offenders were escaping without punishment due to the low benchmark.

In 2017, a 42-year-old man was found not guilty of raping a then 15-year-old on the grounds she had consented, provoking outrage and calls for the age limit to be raised.

Despite its economic and technological advances, South Korea remains a traditional and patriarchal society, where victims of sexual assault have been shamed for coming forward.

The age of consent was raised to 16 in order to "protect teenagers from sex crimes at a fundamental level," the South's Justice Ministry said in a statement.

The amended law also eliminated statutes of limitation for sexual crimes against minors under 13."

I think 16 brings Korea in line with most countries, but idk. Having 18 be the age of consent a bit extreme imo

This may be OT and random, but it's weird to me how most countries that have the age of consent at 16 say they're old enough to engage in sexual activity with say a 30 year old and yet baby them at the same time and consider them and label them children for a lot of other things. For example, nude pics of a 16 year old is considered child pornography (even if you're dating them) but having sex with them is ok. Isn't that admitting that yeah they're still pretty young? I don't think 18 is extreme at all considering that is adult age, but that's my opinion.

It's 16 here in Scotland and I have no issues with that but I think Korea still needs to bring it higher honestly because of the age thing. As a 16 year old can actually be only 14 which thinking about it disgusts me because that means that before an 11 year could actually consent.

16 is old enough to have sex but not drink alcohol

the logic has left the chat

Yeah I agree that there are some inconsistencies. Like how there are examples of people who are younger than 18 who've been prosecuted for child pornography when it's of their significant other who is the same age. But I'd argue that keeping nudes is in some ways worse than (consensual) sex, as there is a risk of the pictures/videos spreading which would cause a lot of harm to someone in high school. Meanwhile an age of consent of 18 is a bit restrictive as many people have their sexual debuts several years earlier, and a 16 to 17-year old can be involved in healthy sexual/romantic relationships with people who are a bit older. Just from the people I went to HS with, several had sex with people who were older (to varying degrees) and only had positive experiences. Now, there are certainly issues, but those can be handled through other legislation and looking at the specifics of the case, as opposed to a blanket ban. For instance if a 16-year old is in a manipulative relationship with a 30-year old, that can and should be prosecuted anyway.

An age of consent of 18 would work too, but then you have to interpret it very liberally in order not to outlaw healthy relationships. Should 16-year olds be allowed to date 18-year olds? 17-year olds and 20-year olds?

Edit: it's Korean age? Then they should raise it a bit.

I wish they raised it in my country too. Here the age of consent is 14. It's ridiculous. 14 year old children shouldn't be having sex. Especially not with adults.

You can legally drink alcohol at 16 in lots of countries, as well as drive, work, and join the military, even vote under certain circumstances. Doesn't seem crazy to me to set the AOC around that age.

I don't mean to sound accusatory with this comment btw, it's just sometimes people seem to forget the world exists outside the US.
