(Not in a specific order) Arguably the top 10 active girl groups right now: Twice, Blackpink, Mamamoo, Red Velvet, IZ*One, ITZY, Gidle, Gfriend, Oh My Girl, and WJSN/Apink.  Lovelyz is full of talent with a good discography. What are they lacking? What could Woollim improve on?

🤔

they are not underrated tho?! just not as popular as the more popular groups

The international community rarely talk about them tho...

And it seems like each year less and less kfans do too.

No, but they'd be right under the top 10. They lack huge hits and/or huge sales and fandom power like the top 10 ggs but they've charted decently, especially in their first 2-3 years and their sales are pretty good for a mid tier gg.

I think they sell a "too innocent" image for western public, that's why I think they're successful domestically, but not that relevant internationally

I'm not talking about just the Western fans, the entire global community in general including many parts of Asia and etc. Lovelyz is underrated.

I really like Lovelyz as a group and their personalities but some of their songs aren't on my daily playlists. I personally really loved WoW. The sound was cute and funky and a good mix of something familiar with something new. The concept was also very fun.

Watching Mijoo and Jisoo on Battle Trip was also very fun so I don't think they lack much in variety skills. Maybe Woollim doesn't want to push them to appeal to non-asian markets though and thas okay too. I dont think every group has to check every box to be considered successful. As long as they get dividend pay outs that can pay their bills and a dedicated fanbase I think they're doing okay.

the answer to your question was given this year.
Woollim had no marketing department and it was this year that they created

No, I don't consider them to be in top 10, even if I love them. I don't think that the girls  lack anything in talent, and their discography is more than a solid - there are a lot of great songs that get overlooked. I feel like it has to do a lot with the way Woollim promotes them. At the beginning of the group's debut, I feel like they have tried, but now they don't care about them as much as they do and this is sad. Not that they have given up on them completely, but I feel like their focus is somewhere else. It also doesn't help that the group didn't have a comeback in over a year by now.

Imho, they need that one 'hit' song to help them have their breakthrough.

because woollim ain't shit

people saying that they haven't had a hit...ah choo was HUGE in korea. it was much bigger than songs by groups that i-fans love more. the thing is, ah-choo was a sleeper hit though, and woollim didn't capitalize on that success. time and time again they miss opportunities to promote lovelyz. their michael jackson 'beat it' acappella went viral...and woollim did nothing. mijoo walking on the way to music bank went viral...and they send her to a few shows. even after queendom, lovelyz was nowhere to be seen. lovelyz haven't come back as a group in over a year now. it's not lovelyz' fault at all that woollim sucks at promoting them. but now that they finally have a marketing department, i hope that changes.

IMO their music is boring. It's always a similar concept.

their concept/music is fine they're going the safe route I think they were doing good up until 2018 I think their last good song was "That Day" their 2019 release just wasn't as good as the previous and I think I lost interest in them since then

"Rocket Punch" is under the same company right? perhaps they are more invested in the new girl group

yes rocket punch is woollim's newest gg. possibly...it also helps that they got a marketing department in time for rocket punch. i guess we'll see with sujeong's solo this month if woollim is going to put the effort in...

isn't that... being underrated?

well yeah I guess 🤔 but I am comparing them to the other mid tier groups cause they're still doing better than groups like wjsn, Elris, April, Momoland, DIA, Gugudan etc.. we could say they're underrated when compared to the best mid tier groups such as Oh My Girl/Apink who are leading the mid tier roster meanwhile groups such as Twice/BP/RV are top tier so they're not in the same League as the mid tier groups.

IMO their music is boring. It's always a similar concept. They've got the skills and talent to switch it up. They're like an early era GFriend.

Korea would probably enjoy that sort of music as the innocent image and cheerful songs worked for groups like Gfriend or Apink or their own hit ah choo. They didn't get a hit after ah choo but probably don't experiment because they fear losing the fandom. The fandom might not be big but is already profitable since they held concerts with good attendance.

Anyway most groups hit big in their rookie years. Lovelyz was considered a rival for red velvet since they debuted the same year, also a rival for Gfriend because of the school girl concept. However both of these ggs became a top group alongside twice, so yea, read it as they were overshadowed and became a one hit wonder. I mean not every group can be on top.

But i'm still quite shocked since the media play around the infinite sister group and the next SNSD and everything else was huge. I don't think woollim messed up. They had lots of comebacks in their rookie years, even had chance to go viral, most groups hit big after that. Public probably just preferred others and that's it.

that's pretty much sums up everything they had to compete with RV and then Gfriend/Oh My Girl/Twice debuted in 2015 followed by BP in 2016 the public probably shifted their attention to the other groups more.

Exactly, although I would say lovelyz was kinda in a better situation than Oh My Girl for the early years. They had a hit and better album sales. Ever since Secret Garden era Oh My Girl's songs reached a semi hit level (kinda same level as lovelyz' hi) and then nonstop happened so now tables turned I guess.
