Would it be okay to take a Xanax that’s not prescribed to me?

Dad went to ICU today. Either he has pneumonia or corona virus. He’s a lung cancer patient and I’ve been having full blown anxiety and panic attack. Mom has Xanax (I think it’s like 0.25mg). I broke the Xanax a little and was wondering would it be okay to take it for the anxiety so I could get some sleep?

No. Do not take medication that is not prescribed to you. Do breathing exercises. Remember to focus on breathing out slowly. This should help you feel less anxious. You can also try drinking certain kinds of tea like chamomile to help too.

As someone who has taken xanax (alprazolam) both prescribed to me and in other circumstances:

It is illegal to take someone else's medication. Full disclosure. That said, it is generally a very safe drug.

But DO NOT MIX IT WITH ALCOHOL OR ANY OTHER DRUG!

Xanax has a lot of potential interactions with other substances and can be VERY dangerous when mixed with alcohol. However, when taken alone, it is extremely difficult to overdose on. It's functionally impossible to OD on Xanax alone.

That said, if you were to take it, don't take too much of it. Take only a much as you need to calm down. It has the potential to make you feel sleepy and forgetful. This is a really common side effect.

Can I ask what do the pills look like? Do you know the dosage? I've taken several different dosages so I have an idea of what they feel like (although everyone responds differently to medication)

I would suggest you to dont. I know calming medicines like these are reliable in such cases, but unless you are on a point you cannot control yourself, i would say dont take it.

On the other hand, try to keep calm, put your head between your knees and take deep breaths
