With most of the world having to stay indoors to flatten the COVID-19 curve, many have turned to online shopping to get what they need. And in China, this has led to the already very popular live streaming shopping broadcasts to become even more in-demand.

Two of China’s most popular live streamers are Wei Ya and Austin Lee. Wei Ya’s broadcasts are viewed by up to 300 million people at a time, making her one of the most sought-after influencers in the country. She also boasts a record of selling RMB300mil (S$60mil) worth of products in a two-hour broadcast.

The 35-year-old is so popular, it's been rumoured that Fan Bingbing, 38, wanted to engage her to sell products from her beauty label, Fan Beauty, on a live stream. Wei Ya has previously mentioned that Bingbing is her idol, which led many to believe that she would jump at the chance to collaborate with the actress.

However, a source close to Wei Ya has claimed that she has turned down Bingbing’s offer. Though she didn't disclose why, netizens have speculated that the reason could be because of all the negative press that has surrounded Bingbing since her tax evasion scandal.

It's also said that Austin is unlikely to work with Bingbing too, as he has been peddling Korean skincare brand Sulwhasoo’s products alongside Angelababy and Carina Lau since last year.

Bingbing has reportedly seen a huge drop in job offers since her scandal, and a rumoured ban from Chinese TV also means that she is unable to take on any acting projects in China. It doesn't help that the launch of Fan Beauty was marred by negative reviews, with some buyers complaining that her facial masks are of “poor quality” and are “no good at all”.
