Rank the top kpop girl groups!

in terms of fame, public recognition, digital sales, physical sales, and individual relevance

it's true that there are group that have more album sales than others but they lack digital sales, or the public recognition etc etc

so, if I take all these criteria into consideration,   the top girl groups in my opinion are

  1. Twice
  2. Blackpink
  3. Mamamoo
  4. Red Velvet
  5. G-idle
  6. Izone
  7. Itzy
  8. Gfriend

Twice and Blackpink are basically in the same ranking and are very close to each other

same thing about rv and mamamoo but 2019 mamamoo was a total slayage and rv redeemed themselves with Psycho but after a series of  underwhelming  cbs and Mammaoo clearly has  more individual relevancy and successful solo debuts

now why I put G-idle before Izone?

well, it's true that izone broke the records of physical album sales but it's still not enough especially that  izone are basically disbanding soon  and only had 2 cbs in their career

g-idle wins in the other categories and idle has been topping the brand reputation for months  and even broke records since their debut

imo, I feel like they are more relevant

again, this ranking is based on an average of the criteria mentioned above

Now, what's your personal ranking?

Twice

Blackpink

Red Velvet

Mamamoo

Izone

G-idle

Itzy

Gfriend

Bonus: Oh my girl

To me RV is still above Mamamoo because they have more hit songs overall, bigger physical sales and bigger fandom, especially international.

Izone and G-idle are around the same level but Izone has much more fandom power, way better sales and all their songs have charted well, contrary to G-idle that underperformed with Senorita and Uh-Oh. ITZY debuted with a huge hit but their 2 comebacks didn't have the same impact. I'd put them at the same level as G-idle tbh but I feel G-idle probably have a bit more public recognition right now.

Gfriend is still decently relevant but they'd be definitely below all those other ggs right now because they don't have a decent hit since TFTML.

And I put OMG as a bonus because they've been rising for the last 2 years and they're currently one of the best charting ggs. They only lack better sales and more fandom power.

I agree with the Twice thing tbh. Actually I'd say both top 2 ggs are on thin ice. BP because they barely release music and Twice because their 2 last comebacks underperformed compared to other gg songs, especially Feel Special, and Izone's last album outsold their last album. Twice needs to bounce back quickly or 4th gen groups like G-idle, Izone and ITZY will end up taking over.

Fiesta is their best charting song

their last cb didn't do that well on digital charts

If I'm not mistaken, Violeta charted for 4-5 months on melon top 100 while Senorita/Uh-Oh dropped in a couple of months maybe? I remember seeing somewhere that Violeta had better digital points.

Izone basically don't have any "flop" song yet and their sales are huge, that's why I put them above but I consider Izone/G-idle/ITZY around the same level.

Agree with most of your list except I would firmly put Red Velvet in 3rd place over Mamamoo. Let's compare metrics.

Albums that sold over 100K:

Red Velvet = 7    (Rookie, The Red Summer, Summer Magic, RBB,  The Reve Festival Day 1, Day 2, Finale)

Mamamoo= 1    (Reality in Black)

MV views over 100 Million+

Red Velvet = 7    (Ice Cream Cake, Dumb Dumb, Russian Roulette, Red Flavor, Peek-a-Boo, Bad Boy, Psycho)

Mamamoo = 2   (Starry Night, HIP)

Title tracks that achieved Gaon's Digital platinum status (2.5 million+ copies sold)

Red Velvet: 3    (Russian Roulette, Red Flavor & Bad Boy)

Mamamoo: 2    (Décalcomanie & Starry Night)

Longest charting title tracks on Melon (20+ weeks)

Red velvet: 7      Red Flavor - 65 weeks

                             Russian Roulette - 39 weeks

                             Dumb Dumb - 30 weeks

                             Rookie - 27 weeks

                             Bad Boy - 27 weeks

                             Peek-a-Boo - 25 weeks

Ice Cream Cake - 20 weeks

Mamamoo: 5      Décalcomanie - 43 weeks

                              Starry Night - 34 weeks

                              You're The Best - 31 weeks

Um Oh Ah Yeah - 28 weeks

                              Egotistic - 23 weeks

Music Show Wins:

Red Velvet: 73    (Won triple crowns on all 3 Korean public broadcasting stations KBS, MBC & SBS)

Mamamoo: 41   (Won triple crowns on 1 Korean public broadcasting station SBS)

Spotify Monthly Listeners

Red Velvet: 4.4 Million

Mamamoo: 2.6 Million

Most #1's on iTunes worldwide

Red Velvet: 44 countries

Mamamoo: 18 countries

Instagram Followers

Red Velvet: 8.7 Million

Mamamoo: 3.6 Million

Twitter Followers

Red Velvet: 2.4 Million

Mamamoo: 1.2 Million

None of the Red Velvet members have made their solo debut yet so you cant really compare that metric. However as far as public recognition goes, both Red Velvet and Mamamoo have their respective "it" girls Irene and Hwasa. Both are insanely popular in Korea with multiple CF's and endorsement deals and both have consistently topped the brand reputation rankings many times in the past.

However I do think collectively, Red Velvet members are much more balanced in popularity than Mamamoo which is why I give them an edge over this as both Seulgi and Joy have been topping the rankings in recent months. For example in the most recent March brand reputation ranking ALL Red Velvet members rank in the top 30 list with Joy, Irene and Seulgi all ranking in the top 10. Hwasa also ranks in the top 10 but is the ONLY member of Mamamoo to rank in the top 30 list at all.

Also on top of that, Gallup Korea (very renowned list) released their top artists ranking for 2019 and the only female idol groups to rank in the top 10 are Twice (#6) & Red Velvet (#8). This list is determined by research and public respondents so it's a pretty accurate measure of public recognition. Red Velvet are either on par/beats Mamamoo in almost every category and for that reason I would place them 3rd.

Mamamoo has 2 mvs with over 100 million views, not 1: Starry night and Hip. They upload their mvs on 2 official channels so both sources count

You list seems reasonable. Maybe RV in third and Mamamoo in 4th, but 3rd and 4th are about the same.

Maybe add Apink and OMG to make it top 10. I think ggs are doing pretty well that you could make a top 15 list.
