hynapia 3,977
But it's a lie tho? Pop music/idols are mostly for entertainment, and that doesn't apply to kpop but western pop too. Majority of top western singers have average vocals too, except a select few like Beyonce, Adele, Ariana, etc. In kpop there's actually a lot of above average/good vocalists (Taeyeon, Mamamoo, Dreamcatcher, EXO's vocal line, ATEEZ's Jongho, Treasure's Yedam/Jeongwoo, etc). As long the main/lead vocalists are decent and can perform the songs well I don't see they need to have super impressive vocals. Aphrodisiac 3,317
There isn’t lack of locals in the industry, it’s just that looks, sex appeal, etc is more dominant especially in the entertainment area. It’s been like this since the beginning.
Oli London 1,762
Kpop is not a competition to see who sings best, it's to make money. Also a lot of kpop songs are not great for showing vocal ability too. It's very different from the American music industry.

I don't feel like repeating myself. I literally skipped over....your entire comment because as I said it isn't analogous. Saying there should be no standards because skills aren't the only factor in success is ridiculous. OP is correct that standards are very low, and that's because entertainment companies are trying to make a quick buck, and will debut whoever is willing to put up with the idol lifestyle. Of course skill set isn't the only factor in entertainer popularity, but that doesn't mean that skills aren't relevant at all, or that stans shouldn't have a higher standard for their idols. felidae 2,742
Yes because the market mostly care about visuals. Kpop is NEVER about 'good singing' or 'talent'. It's about their performance, on and off stage. Some of them are good vocalist in standardized standard btw, whatever it is. And are you new? Wendii 1,405
Kpop all around is mediocre, stagnant and formalic. With only a few standing out! (BTS, Big Bang, Blackpink just to make a few) I mostly listen to Korean solo artist like Naul and co.. I never understood people who say kpop just sooooooo much better than the west or American music market.. because it’s like? Are you serious? I understand everyone has their opinion kpop is just not giving THAT!!! Especially when you break it down and realize that a good majority of these group recycle the same ideas and all their videos are filmed the same way with just different clothes and backdrop! Western artist are the innovators and trend setters with kpop idols being the followers and clones! I mean even when America and the rest of the west (mostly speaking of English based country’s here) still had a demand for boy and girl groups.. kpop industry just wasn’t seeing ours on or off the stage! Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child, TLC, En Vogue, Pussycat Dolls, Little Mix >> NKOTB, *NSYNC, BSB, 1D, Boyz II Men, New Edition, Westlife >>> Musically Artistically Visually conceptually The West >> Kpop
harumaki 4,354
Idols aren't supposed to be only good singers. They need charm, personality, dance, rap (in some cases) and visuals. So yeah, I don't think singing is the first priority. And I understand why some fans think their idol is *the* best in what they do, having a bias affects objectivity imo. seola 2,080
nevermind the vocals, i'm more insulted when they don't have the stage presence/star power to make up for it
shay 986
I feel that in a group theres no need to have an above average singers as long as they have stable main vocal to carry if their song sucks nobody would be paying attention to the group despite how talented they are anyways I feel that...people should be able to hype whoever they want for vocal if they like their tone and interpretation of the song..sometimes its kinda annoying when people just want to praise their faves but people who knows about vocal pedagogy would be preaching about how awful the techniques are..lol BUT they shouldn't be hyped as best vocalist because that need to be taken into acc the vocal technicalities.. On another hand, i feel like ifans dont care about Korean Vocalist like Son Seung Yeon who also can rap at all which was why she was so underrated despite them keep preaching about vocal talent.. 1
RS92 81
Depends on what you consider the standard though..If good vocal techniques are the standard, whats the point of having good vocal techniques when you have to lipsync more than half of the time..also its interesting how everyone becomes vocal coaches to give out certificates for vocal techniques but are ok with repetitive and monotonous vocals where you cant even point out voices apart.. I care more about how good the vocals sound to me and if they convey the emotions right and I can feel their emotions when they sing..Same repetitive techniques wont make a difference if the vocalist cant even make me feel his/her emotions in the song which is the issue for me with almost every grp that I gave a try..There is this typical vocal tone that is common among most kpop groups..now if that is because of the same technique or just too many idols have that vocal tone, I dont know but it is boring to listen to..
