i hear people say this a lot, that these people are successful and popular because of their talent and they have the best work in their field, but in my opinion there are way more talented people who just aren’t as popular. i think there are definitely some people & artists who lucked out with their popularity and success rather than being the most talented.

i look at some artists i like and i think, if they had an opportunity to showcase their talent and skills they could be so popular. but they are not as lucky as some.

In the entertainment industry? Absolutely not. But in the music industry, I do think you need certain amount of talent to have a long-lasting career (or at least when it comes to solo acts), but you don't have to be necessarily the best.

12 minutes ago, literally tilted said:

the music industry isn't about talent

it's about marketing

also you can dance good, sing good, but their music can be absolutely terrible

Also I think that you need and specific look and have an specific voice for the pop stuff, (talking about the big K-Pop industry) and behave  a certain manner so you are more "reachable" to people, specially the teenagers

Of course not. It's all about a combination of enough talent, charisma, good connections, luck, and marketing. There are other factors like trends/fads. Sometimes one can be so talented that will attract good connections and people interested in spreading/sell your talent. Sometime luck isn't in your side and your talent will never be showcased. Some industries may be better at evaluate talent than others. I guess classical music aficionados are more focused on talent than others, for instance. Still these other factors are necessary to ensure success.

Idols have a pretty narrow window of opportunity to be properly marketed as well. Music and painting can be appreciated even after death. Idols need their youth as a selling point.
