writes a long heartfelt message for his fans on his birthday....

 

The message is quite long...but do take your time to read this wonderful message that gives us a glimpse into his thoughts and perspective...

 

"1 year has 365 days, in the situation that each of the 24 hours has been passing very slowly every day, 1 and a half years have gone by~
In this one and a half years, there have been too many pleasant surprises, too many emotions, too much sadness, too much pride.

Every time my birthday comes around, once again you and I have a chance to communicate on the same terms~
In this time's birthday message, I want to talk about some personal things with everyone, okay? ^ ^

When I was in school, I never thought that I could ever stand on a global stage, singing for everyone who supports me - perhaps this was just a dream.

I only hoped that the songs I've written can receive everyone's acknowledgment, or that my abilities could achieve something in the music world.

But now that dream, because of SM Entertainment and all of you who have helped me along the way, has come true!

But now, however, I am at a loss, at a loss of what exactly do I need to do?
Perhaps I am still that immature child, but a job has given me a feeling of responsibility, allowing me to mature, letting me carry it onward.
Along this journey, I've slowly felt myself changing, and this change could be for the better or worse.
Actually, it's just like what I said before, I just have a special job.

What I want is the same as what everyone wants, what I have is that same as what everyone has, a normal person who is no different from anyone else.
These days, even though I've gotten a lot of acknowledgment, but I've never felt satisfied!
I will never give up! I want to be the best!
I want to tell everyone who supports me, I don't want to disappoint you with my abilities!

Perhaps this kind of thinking frequently leaves me in my own world, as if no one is able to understand me.
Friends who are cheering for me and encouraging me over the phone and thinking of every hero who supports me, truthfully, I am very blessed; my life has been very easy. I should be satisfied. But if I can't reach perfection, will you still support me?

I frequently use this quote to encourage myself:
"In reality, dreams are not far away at all, you just need to work hard to attain them. Even though we might overlook the scenery along the way, but we can look ahead to the faroff rainbow!" Do you think this is correct?

Behind what we see as a simple birthday fanboard, how much effort have you all given?
And what corner of the world does the sweat of this effort drip down to?
All of you, in order to give me this temporary happiness, probably spent a year planning, a month preparing, and a day waiting.
After seeing all of this, I really felt it all. You've all worked so hard, labored so long, thank you.

Actually I am very happy to see you holding my support sign, I like hearing your cheers.
But seeing you fall asleep while waiting, hearing your voice grow hoarse because of cheering, getting hurt because of crowding...I can feel my own selfishness.

I only wish for you to take care of yourselves, don't get hurt, don't be sad because of anything, even if you're sad, you don't have to be afraid! Because I will compose a healing song for all of you!

Once, at an airport, a fan asked me, "My meticulously prepared gift, and another's meticulously prepared letter, what's the difference? Why won't you accept my gift?"
I couldn't answer her, I could only apologize, I'm sorry.
And then I thought, was my decision to only accept letters incorrect...which has resulted in hesitation while even receiving letters.

Actually it's like this, this is everyone's sincerity, I understand, I know, actually for you to even come to see EXO's performance, buy a copy of our album, raise my support sign, scream for me once, or those fans in faraway places, who silently wish me a "Happy birthday" etc...these are the best gifts to me!

Because I've heard that a fan, in order to buy an album or a gift, needed to cut back on their living expenses...even making a support sign, they'll use all of their money...I know, since we're all about the same age, every cent is hard to come by, every cent is hard earned, so I hope that everyone will use the money in a meaningful way.

All over the world, there are many, many people who need help, to be able to help others is also our common wish, but I hope everyone will put effort in the monetary aspect as well!
If there's any misunderstanding, it might lead to blind donating...

It's not true that fans must donate money in a meaningful area - on the topic of helping people, we can go out and volunteer, do charity work etc~
In the monetary aspect, I hope that before you send me a gift, before donating, first buy some clothing for yourself or your parents, buy something you or your parents either like or need, or buy something tasty for yourself or your parents, something nutritious, to aid your health.
After doing that, then go help those in need~ If you do this, then that's your gift to me!

I want to receive this kind of gift every year~
I also hope that your family will also like us as well~
Happily sitting in front of the television, or coming to watch our live performance - isn't that a blessing?
And because you need strength to hold up our support signs, right?
You have to take care of yourselves, if you don't take care of yourselves how will you continue to passionately, excitedly support us? I know you're the best - of course you can do it!

And as for me~ I only have one big head~ One neck, two hand, two legs, two feet, and one body.
I can't wear everything you send me~ I'm afraid that if I don't wear some of them, you'll be sad.
There's also no way I can wear all of it, I'm afraid that you'll think your gift wasn't good enough, wasn't correct.

Actually everything you send me is good! All awesome! I only hope you can be happy everyday~

MOST IMPORTANTLY SILLY YIXING AND HIS HEART OF GOLD

 

One morning, someone mentioned yixing on weibo to donate and help a 9 years old boy diagnosed with leukemia. Within 15 minutes after the mention, Yixing made the transaction donation.
However, he didn’t know that this action would be auto posted on weibo by the system, because there isn’t a prompt for donators to choose if they want it to be posted on their accounts.
By the time he found out, his fans and fansites have already started reposting and following what he did, donating money.
He then quietly deleted the post.
He once stated that he didn’t want his fans to donate money for his sake ;__;
In any case, cfans and fansites are all following his footstep and donating money to different diseased kids under the same project.

[140622] At Gimpo Airport today, a lot of Korean fans showed up. Yixing was confused yet amazed at the same time. He kept on asking the managers, "All of them are my fans? Are they really my fans?" Manager didn't reply, too busy protecting him. Yixing is quite happy today. Even when he got on the car, he still kept on waving to the fans.

I must have been living under the rocks… JUST read accounts by fans who knew of Lay(Yixing) long before his debut. lol These are accounts of Lay pre-debut, so this is the real Lay behind the cameras~

 

Maybe someone has translated all of this already, but here are some excerpts that were really moving so I had to translate and share:

 

Account from a girl named TangTang who’s been Lay’s loyal fan since 2005:

(note: Lay had his own baidu forum during the times when he was on that Chinese idol-making show back in ‘05. This is a fan who managed that forum throughout all these years.)

 

On meeting with fans:

[We met up with Lay a couple of times. One of time was on a really warm day, but it got really windy at night. My friend and I were both pretty nervous, but Lay was really easy-going, smiling the whole time, so warm and friendly. He sat there and chatted with us like friends for a while, and he didn’t display any attitude at all. He also played guitar, sang, and danced at our request.  Because my friend wasn’t from Changsha, so we were going to show her around, but after we got outside we realized that it has gotten really cold (I was wearing a short sleeve). Lay looked at us and said “Today the wind’s too strong, TangTang(the fan) is wearing short sleeves, why don’t I show you around next time, let’s go inside, I’ll chat with you some more.†I suddenly realized then that Lay was a very detail-oriented and caring boy.]

 

On sending Lay to airport:

[Once I went to the airport to send him off to Korea. He asked me a question that I didn’t even know how to answer. When we were sitting there waiting for his plane, Lay took out all the snacks that he was going to bring to Korea to share with me, and asked me if I was thirsty and whether he should buy me water or soda. Later during our chat, he asked me “TangTang, you have been supporting me for many years now right? 1, 2, 3, 4, seems like 4 years now (actually he calculated wrong, it was more than 5 years). I really want to thank you for supporting me all this me. What I want to know is, since I haven’t had any activities in these past 4 years, why did you keep on supporting me?†I really didn’t expect him to ask me that question, I froze for awhile, and still couldn’t come up with any reasonable answer. Maybe it was because of his frankness, maybe it was because he was so easy-going, maybe it was because of many many many things. Now that I think about my answer back then, I think my answer was too silly, even though right now I still can’t give him a clear answer, but now I would say “because you are worth it.â€]

 

On Lay’s life in Korea:

[Later, in order to make it to debut. Lay became more occupied. Practice times became longer and longer, he often stayed to practice till very late into the night before he went back to his dorm. He grew very thin as well. Every time we asked how he was doing, he always replied “I have been fine, please don’t worry about me.†Every time we tell him to take care of his health, rest more, don’t try too hard. He would always reply “I have to have try even harder than other trainees, the only chance I have at debut is to practice even more than others. They are too good.†When he says that, we can’t bear criticize his workaholic ways anymore.]

 

On Lay’s birthday:

[After Lay’s appearance at Shinee concert, our forum gained more members and the team became more professional. We had a team of staff as well. 20 should be an important milestone in one’s life, so we really want to have a quality birthday celebration for Lay… … …  since we really didn’t have that much money, we couldn’t afford anything too expensive. The gifts we gave him were really plain.  But Lay kept on thanking us nonstop. He also said “TangTang, don’t treat me so well. I don’t even know how to return the favor to you guys anymore. After all, I haven’t made my debut. If I debuted, I can prove that I have at least tried hard, but right now I don’t have anything.† Lay, we don’t care if you debut or not, your hard work always is visible to our eyes.]

Since the closure of the idol-making show that Lay appeared on back in 2005, his baidu forum member count has dropped. But Lay has been really appreciative of the one who still supported him by posting words of gratitude every once in awhile. Here are translation of his posts:

Translated this account from a staff of zhangyixing baidu bar who was studying abroad in Korea and was the frontline person to deliver Lay’s birthday presents and cake

 

Here are some excerpts that really moved me:

 

[…When I came out of the taxi, it was already 9:48pm (they were supposed to meet at 9). There were only 3 people waiting for stars outside the SM building. Hoping that maybe Lay was still practicing, I sat on the other side of the SM building while I waited. Suddenly a girl came over and asked me in Chinese “I see that you are holding a cake, are you waiting for Lay as well?†I said yes. So we waited for him together while we chatted about how we became Lay’s fan. I was more envious of her, she said she started liking Lay while she was waiting for other stars. She came here often, last time she saw Lay was 3 months ago. She asked me how long have I known Lay, embarrassed, I told her that even though I had connections with him for being the forum staff, I haven’t seen him in person yet, and he doesn’t know who I am.

It was already 10:30pm, a guy came out from SM’s back door. Lay? He saw us and smiled, I knew it was him. In order to get Lay’s attention, I started speaking in Changsha dialect, Lay seemed really happy “Ah, hometown dialect. It feels really good to hear hometown dialect in Korea.†He then said that the presents and cake are too heavy for us to carry so he’ll carry them. He first helped carry the other girl’s, then he carried mine. He kept on repeating words of thanks, and joked that he was worried that he won’t be able to eat cake, but he didn’t know that he would receive two today. Then we started chatting.

 

Lay: “How long has it been since I saw you last time? 1 month? 2 months?â€

Other girl: “no, it’s been 3 months.â€

Lay: “really, I feel like it hasn’t been that longâ€

Other girl: “see, I have been on vacation for 2 months, now it’s already 1 month into a new semester…â€

Lay: “I came at 9:00pm by the building front, nobody was here, so I thought maybe you were late. Then I waited 5 min there, also went to the front door and opened it, there were still no one there, so I went back to the studio to practice dance for a little while. Later I came out and still there were nobody here, so I left. Halfway home, I was worried that you guys might’ve came late and could be waiting for me, so I came back to the company again…â€

Then we chatted while we walked over to a convenience store close by the SM building, and went up to the balcony. The stairway to the balcony was very narrow, Lay walked behind us, when we walked up the stairs he repeatedly told us to be careful and don’t fall down. I started telling him about the things being discussed right now on his forum. While signing autographs, Lay apologized, “my handwriting isn’t really that great. I don’t know what to write, I only know how to sign my name.†In order to make him feel less worried about everybody judging him on his handwriting, I joked “we liked you for so long, we all know what your handwriting looks like. hahaha, it’s alright.†Later we took some pictures, and I asked him about his health (note: Lay has a coagulation/bleeding disorder, it was revealed in one of the essays he wrote back in the days). Lay actually said “Before I was feeling a little too exhausted, but the problem wasn’t too serious, it was because I danced for too long. After I rested for a week, now I’m all back to normal, so I started practicing little by little again.†I didn’t know what to say, so I said “when you are away from home, your health is the most important. you need to take good care of yourself, don’t get injured again.â€

In the middle of our chat, I got a text from TangTang telling me to treat Lay to a meal and that they will reimburse me. He saw the text and laughed “I really didn’t expect you all to prepare these presents for me. I feel very content with the cake already. Before when I celebrated my birthday, I just had dinner with my grandparents. Today you guys gave me so many gifts, I am really really really thankful. Right now I don’t have any money, if I had money I would treat you guys to a meal. It wouldn’t be that you guys are discussing about treating me to a meal. I really want to apologize, to receive all these presents from you guys, but I cannot give you anything in return. How about I buy you some soda? I can still afford sodas.†Of course I told him it’s alright, that he didn’t have to buy me soda. In Korea, a bottle of soda is quite expensive, just a can is around 6rmb. Right now he hasn’t debuted, so he doesn’t have any sources of income. I don’t even buy sodas myself often because I feel like they are too expensive. After chatting with him, I really felt like he was extraordinary. Presents are just necessary gifts, it’s not like they are being given everyday, today is his birthday after all! He just looked so genuinely appreciative, and kept saying thanks repeatedly. I told Lay “These presents are just here to show you our support, it’s really nothing. You know everyone is just waiting for you to debut soon.†He smiled happily and said “Me too, I hope I can debut soon.â€

(he didn’t specify the disease though, I’m guessing that it’s either von Willebrand disease or hemophilia A/B, those are the most commonly inherited coagulation disorders)

One morning when I woke up, I heard an enchanting melody and noticed an overwhelmingly stinky odor! I looked to the left, looked to the right, oh my gosh, my father was singing even while sitting on the toilet, unbelievable! See, that’s how much my father loves to sing! 

 

An old Chinese proverb says “Like father, like son!†I enjoy singing very much too, and I sing pretty well. Perhaps it was because of my potential in performing arts, my father always takes me here and there to learn various things. Of course, he mainly takes me to singing lessons. Unfortunately, in my throat there was an enlarged tonsil, my father was worried that further enlargement will block my pharynx and thus prevent me from singing, so he took me to a hospital to schedule for a tonsillectomy. We found out that I have a problem with blood coagulation, so the surgeon recommended that I avoid surgical procedures. When I woke up, I was lying on a hospital bed, above me hung a bag of transfusion blood. I saw my father standing by the doorway holding a cigarette, and he looked very anxious. I thought: “You deserved it, who was the one who insisted on the surgery?†

 

Two weeks later, I noticed that my father has changed, he was not as arrogant and cocky anymore, anything I wanted he would buy for me. “Son! Can daddy take you outside for a walk?†My father asked.
