Why are some gay guys feminine/flamboyant?

Something I've always wondered.

Is it because of already existing stereotypes? Is it because they're portrayed as such in the media or in society? Is it nature or is it nurture?

And how did the distinguishable "gay accent" come about anyway?

Please discuss.

Why are the reasons important? Some gay men are flamboyant and that's just the way it is.

The reasons are very important to me.

I want to know how this "gay behavior" came to be...

Some gay people might have learned since they were young that gay = girly and have the idea that shopping and acting girly constitutes what a gay person should be like. The media and society both have a great influence on peoples behavior.

Why do gay people have to be so different from straight people, at least based on stereotypes?

It's just their personalities?

Um... now let me ask you these questions.

Why do girls like pink?

Why do guys like blue?

Why do girls put on makeup and guys don't?

Why are guys generally more aggressive?

Why are Asians generally better at math?

Why are gangs often associated with black people?

I don't think it's because it's "just their personalities."

There are social constructs that cause people to be a certain way. Believe it or not, pink used to be the color desginated for guys and blue was for girls... But somehow it's the complete opposite. So it's not like females were naturally born to like pink. I think nurture has a lot to do with it.

Haha sorry that was a huge tangent.

I've known quite a few straight guys who are 'feminine' as well though.

So having 'girly' traits isn't exclusive to one's sexual orientation. Imo.

Also for those that are gay and feminine, I personally think it's caused both by society and one's own self awareness.

Yeah sure society has a great influence on peoples behavior but society also acts as if femininity in a man is something to judge and look down on so if I go by your argument of it maybe being a learned trait then wouldn't they also have learned that being 'girly' is something that they should strive not to be since it is ridiculed? It's just their personality.

@Kajitsu: You appear to be confusing gendered performance with sexuality or expression.Gender performance essentially refers to the manner in which someone performs masculine or feminine actions or traits/behavior that are often times associated with being masculine or feminine.

Some of them put it on as an act to alert others that they are gay.

if you planned on preaching to us, then  you should really just have told us

obviously some gay men are not going to be the same as other gay men and you're going to say it's because of society?

when people are growing up, and they see choices to be made and based on their preference they choose which they like more.... possibly based on what society views as  more appropriate or not.

so i guess it was nice to think why some homosexual men are feminine but to say it's because they learned it from society and not because when they were little and they saw a pretty pink dress in the window and liked it ...can be slightly.. rude? not sure

well most of the gay guys that i've come across weren't feminine, which causes me to believe that femininity in some gay guys is just part of their personality? i think our patriarchal society has a role in it as well, since society views gay men as not "real men" and ppl associate "masculinity" as a valued trait in "real men." i've noticed there's many more gay guys that act feminine than lesbians that act butch

I'm gay, but I'm not flamboyant. Even so, I do have several feminine tendencies and I find that part natural. When a woman is pregnant with a male, the female body naturally produces antigens and antibodies against, what the body considers the fetus, the foreign object. This feminizes the fetus, and the female body produces more of these antigens and antibodies after each pregnancy, which explains why the likelihood of a boy being born gay goes up if the women previously had a boy.

Where the whole flamboyant archetype came from is beyond me.

I've wondered too! I always can point a gay out because of the way they act, walk, and move and so far I haven't been wrong
I think it's to let people know that they are gay?

boo hoo
