The Korean Music Awards selection committee note on Musician of the Year nomination

BTS

"In a thoroughly planned flow of narrative, BTS continues to deliver its own story by staying within the frame of an idol by a hair’s breadth. As a result, in the hands of BTS, which became the nominees for the Music of the Year for the third time, numerous trophies won at major Western music awards are held. At this moment, without question, BTS is the one and only team that is writing the history of Korean pop music. They are more than qualified. There are no words to add."

What kind of rubbish. I know it’s normal for an organization to have to add sweet talk to the current trend- but they’re not the only ones writing history of Korean pop. Give some credit to the other hardworking artists and people behind the Korean music industry.

For the KMA, it's not just "sweet talk". They seem to be serious ><. They would of said the same thing in their notes for BTS the two years before, and yet they didn't (the previous notes were beautifully written too tho)

I guess, to KMA no one is doing it like BTS, right now. The KMA have had years to observe the Kpop industry to form such a strong conclusion. (Reminder: traditionally they don't give big awards to Kpop artist for a reason...)

Also - This could partially be a lowkey response to some of the haters with in the industry who were against BTS winning all the main awards in 2019.

Lol, so BTS wasn't doing ish before, KMA, I can't tell if this is a low-key backwards compliment or a quick response to the age-old complaints from fans about people winning too many awards.

Ofc, you're not going to disparage one of the biggest draws. That's like the Grammy's saying George Solti wasn't going to be allowed to win anymore awards after his 5th one.

I wouldn't be surprised if this pissed fans off though and the committee has to come back and clarify, again.

Fans who groups were not nominated, I feel overall will not even care. Probably not even paying attention to the notes. In Korea, Kfans know that the KMAs are picky about Kpop idols. Always have been. It was worse in the past.

Regardless I think they’ve overreacted on their compliments about BTS and disregarded all of the hardworking people behind the Korean music industry in their statement. I can agree to some degree that BTS has skyrocketed in a way that is a bit unparalleled to other Kpop artists because of their fanbase size but other than that- they’re still equal to Kpop artists that have grown with larger fanbases and felt their support from everywhere they go. The large amount of attention is received by BTS but their cultural impact is still of the same type when comparing to that of groups like EXO, Big Bang, etc. I’m not saying BTS didn’t do well- not that they don’t deserve the praises they get- I just think KMA should’ve worded it differently.

But I am curious about something..
Why are people against BTS winning all the main awards suddenly just reduced to being simply “haters” by most BTS fans. Overall the morale amongst artists/fans/companies (regardless of who is winning) doesn’t get better  if just one artist is winning awards, especially major awards. I would be against any artist sweeping up awards when most of the shows intentions are to literally host a ceremony to celebrate artists of all musical mediums for their works that have influenced others enough to be voted and celebrated for.

BTS are not receiving all this attention and recognition from Korean public/media because of their fandom alone. It's seems you have not been keeping up with the news and articles for the past few years. The impact BTS has had on the Korean culture (politics, economy, socially, etc) is significantly different then any other Kpop group and/or Korean celebrity.

Armys are not the only ones who have noticed the "haters" or whatever word you want to use to describe those who don't believe BTS deserve their awards. It's not just about "non-fans" there are people working in the industry who seem to not support BTS either. Every award BTS has won they deserved. So personally there's nothing for me to be against.

How are they different?
I have read some of their articles over the years and from what I’ve seen they did everything like I’ve seen other artists do.
Enlighten me how they’re different.

Im not saying they don’t deserve the accolades they’ve received from award shows. I respect them for being able to do so. I’m just curious what it is that makes them different.

Every interest stemmed from their fanbase’ support.  Their massive support is what brought more endorsements, more business opportunities overseas to them. I know that they also use their platform to talk about certain causes/issues like mental health, etc. But culturally speaking, it’s their fanbases’ diversity that led to their ability to want to understand different cultures/customs, no? That’s why they continue to educate themselves and help to spread respect for different cultures.

Anyways, anyone that’s not an Army is simply reduced to being a hater for what? Voicing an opinion. I don’t agree that BTS wrote Kpop history by itself. They made impressive achievements but KMA gave a poor choice of words.

If you still can't see why the Korean public, media and even other celebrities view BTS as different, then I can't help you. Sorry🤧

BTS have interest from fans, celebrities and people around the world due their fandom, music, concepts, and etc.

As I said, that is just the word I used. Please feel free to use which ever one you like to describe those who constantly drag BTS for the awards they deserve.

KMA did what they had to do to make their point clear. It's their opinion.

Why can’t you explain or elaborate? I’m just asking for clarification on why BTS is different.
