Source: Sports Today via Nate

1. [+681, -7] Thining that reggae hair = mocking black people is a discriminatory accusation already, isn't it? Talk about a victim complex.

2. [+473, -11] It's not like Hyuna verbally said anything, I don't get why people are overreacting to her. Hyuna, don't let them intimidate you.

3. [+449, -6] Then what about Skull's reggae hair?

4. [+14, -0] Those international fans better not straighten their hair then since that should be considered mocking Asians. Don't dye or perm your hair blonde. Don't shave your heads.

5. [+10, -0] ㅡㅡ? Why is having reggae hair considered mocking black people?

6. [+9, -0] She's not mocking anyone, she's only doing the hair style because she personally likes it

7. [+7, -0] If you think reggae hair is mocking black people, please get your mental health tested at the hospital... for the sake of others...

8. [+7, -0] ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Reggae hair mocking black people... now that's a miracle of an argument. If an Asian celebrity dyes her hair blonde, is that mocking white people?

9. [+7, -0] Hul, have we been mocking white people when we dye our hair blonde or brown then? If there's nothing immoral or unethical going on, please just leave people alone.

10. [+5, -0] You don't have to respect them. Just ignore anyone who tells you that reggae hair can only be done by black people. That doesn't even make sense.

I mean, Koreans were making a fuss about a kimchi reference just a few days ago.

Idk, I feel like if you claim to respect all your fans then you should take the time to listen to them and also educate yourself on why they might be feeling the way they are feeling. I don't have expectations from knets because we can see from these comments they are ignorant and disrepectful (and, you know, racist...) anyway but I'm honestly tired of idols throwing all these "pretty" words which at the end of the day are just empty words.

I do not think people should have made a big deal out of this because it's obvious she didn't get that hairstyle to mock anyone. Hyuna seems like a caring, nice person. However, now that knets have gotten involved and are spreading their ignorance all over these comments, how about Hyuna does a little searching, understand why some people would feel iffy about her using a hairstyle for that fun when they would get mocked and hurt because of it? She isn't under a strict company anymore so she can speak about this kind of issues when a big company would shut it down. I feel like that would be a nice way to show her appreciation for all her fans.

I just want to say:

Do people think braids come exclusively from Africa? Don´t you know that there are statuettes dated from 20,000 years ago before J.C., from Europe (France, Austria, Greece) that have braids? Braids have also been present in other European countries, China, Latin America and The Caribbean, Native Americans... Braids are part of MANY MANY cultures. Why make a fuss about this? She is not wearing cornrows or dreadlocks because that would be another issue. But in this case she is just wearing braids.

I´m just rolling my eyes at this.

i think ppl should rly be more respectful about this. even if u think its not big deal. on the 2 thread abt this ive seen, it feels just piling on black/americans saying theyre overreacting to be offended, when you can offer a more understanding approach and just agree to disagree abt it. rather than belittle them, it just comes off nasty & its off putting how much hivemind im seeing of this.

me, im just confused about why is it keep beign called reggae hair like it doesnt have a name for the hairstyle? also, i dont think it fits her, it doesnt look good imo.

That looks more ingenious than “reggae”. And I REALLY wish Koreans would stop calling any ethic hairstyle reggae. It’s rude and screams of “we will you use culture to support our egos and image and not give a single fuck to learn about it”.

As for the people here on this site, until you are actually discriminated against because of your hair, I advise you not to be insensitive when people who are speak out against it. Just because you see it an a minuscule thing doesn’t actually make it one. And stop trying to push this anti-black narrative. It’s not funny or cute. It’s just pathetic.

We all know this. Again, despite all of these cultural uses of braids and styling across history, why is REGGAE the go-to word?

If these were literally just called beach braids, elf twists, mermaid waves, or even named to evoke a location (like Caribbean style - because lots of people legit do braid their hair when they go to the beach) or something equally benign, I really don't think the reaction would be this heavy. (I honestly can't even find where the issue is being brought up besides here... So maybe it's an isolated event.)

In anycase, this is very targeted and these commenters (and Hyuna) are very aware of this. They also keep mentioning specifically black people as if it's only us reacting. I'm not with this "reggae" style nonsense. One; what does this even mean? Reggae is a music genre originating in Jamaica. It's not a costume or an "I just decided this looked cute today" look.

I've never seen a Korean person dye their hair blonde and put it in pigtails and say "Milkmade Style", or a Black person flat iron their hair bone straight and call it "Oriental style". If I saw this foolishness happening with my people within our community I'd call it out in a heartbeat. Just as easily as too many people can brush this off, we have a gut reaction to it.

Hyuna wouldn't have gotten this blowback if she hadn't focused solely on this style as if it's some prop, decoration in a showcase, or an outfit. What was she trying to show us? She seems to know this was in bad taste, and I hope she (and other kpop idols in general) doesn't repeat this behavior.

I think people are tired of these "issues" and don't have the energy anymore

What the hell is reggae hair?

This is korean ignorance. Most koreans view braids in that style as direct reference to Skull and Haha (Korean reggae artists who are pretty deeply steeped in the culture and have stayed and worked with reggae artists for years now.)

Koreans don't know that those braids are just beach braids, so they immediately connect it to the thing they're most familiar with.  Even though Skull nor Haha ever had braids, they're locked.

uh wtf Asians are not the only people with straight hair and even black people can have naturally straight hair as well.

But yikes at all these people not understanding how black people in America have been discriminated against for their hairstyle, hence the reactions.

Alright, but I was not talking about them calling the hairstyle "reggae hairstyle" (which is freaking dumb, wow, I´ve never heard such foolery; the ignorance is strong) because I didn´t know Koreans called this hairstyle with that name until I read those comments. That is awful.

But I wrote that because a big majority of the comments I have read on Instagram are saying "Why is she doing cultural appropiation? African hairstyles..." and such. I just wanted to rectify that braids come from many places and are not exclusively from Africa. Not everyone knows this, believe me.

Now, did Hyuna herself called them "reggae" as well? Please let me know. I know she recorded herself saying something on Instagram but I have not been able to use audio because I´m at work.

Exactly. These are beach braids.

I live in The Caribbean and when I was a teen and we went to the beach, most girls came back to school with beach braids. It is very very common here. But calling that hairstyle "regaae" is mindblowing. I´ve noticed Koreans use so many strange terms in public for things that already have a name lol.

tbh i was avoiding this article because i was expecting her to be wearing dreads or cornrows, but clicking into it, i honestly wouldnt have thought it would be offensive if people didnt point it out. so excuse my ignorance because i am a gay asian man lol but arent these just plain braids? i think the bigger issue here is people labelling it "reggae hair"
