Article: BTS' economic effect hits 56 trillion won over 10 years

Source: Kyunghyang News via Nate

1. [+645, -71] BTS has made Hell Chosun billions in tourism but still have to serve in the army ㅋㅋㅋㅋ when pianists earn exemptions just for qualifying for international classic concours ㅋㅋㅋ

2. [+540, -24] That's BTS class, they're the birth of a historical group

3. [+492, -30] They are the best, most unrivaled boy group Korea has ever produced, I'm proud to say that I'm from the same country as them

4. [+44, -3] Honestly, yes, they brought in a lot of money, but it's also fact that they improved the image of Korean men. Most foreigners don't even know where Korea is on the map and used to always ask if you were from North or South. Now they ask me if I'm from BTS' country ㅋㅋ Imagine achieving all that just to hear idiots tell you to serve in the army ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

5. [+43, -7] They're doing so much for the country, is there really a need for them to serve? Just let them promote all around the world and bring up Korea's image while making money.

6. [+41, -3] One properly raised Hallyu group makes me more proud than any Olympic medal

7. [+36, -4] Wow, they're bigger than the Olympics? Goosebumps... BTS really is a gem that you only get once in history

8. [+29, -4] As a BTS fan, reading articles like this makes me realize how bleak reality is. What's the point in maintaining worldwide fame for 10 years when you have to go serve in the army? What's it all for? But I promise that they'll be the last group I ever fangirl over ㅠ so let's last a long time~

9. [+26, -2] One BTS is so much more beneficial for our country than dozens of politicians. Politicians, please reflect over what you've done for us.

10. [+23, -5] BTS really is a group that you get out of the slimmest chances and yet our government is really trying to pull them into the army at the peak of their careers ㅋㅋㅋ Just look at what happened to Rain. After his discharge, he changed up his image and goals and halted his Hollywood promos so he could get married. Chun Jung Myung, Jo In Sung... both of them could no longer land fresh-faced roles and are out there shooting Land Rover CFs. The stress of the army takes a toll on not only your image but your personality as well.

11. [+20, -1] I hope their service can be delayed... this is their peak. Can you really expect them to maintain their economic effect with a two year break? I doubt they'll ever be able to recover their current state of popularity. And dancing will get harder, too... Anyway, this is really the first time I'm seeing a group that would be wasted in the army.

12. [+18, -2] Koreans are enjoying the economic benefits of 56 trillion won and yet are whining in the comments like "It's only fair that BTS has to serve too", how hilarious...

This is an extreme exaggeration, durning 2018 the very peak of Korean tourism, it brought in 30.5 billion, and this include hotels, food, merchandise, flight, domestic and intentional tourism, etc... The whole Kpop scene is worth less than 4.65 billion. this is seems a random number thrown in just to grab the attention of their fans (cause it puts traffic on their site). but if this is true then this means that they are bigger than LG corporation and almost as big as Kia.

Bring traffic to what site? Lol it only takes a few people to get the information and post on Korean community forums like is now. (Nate)

So I doubt Kyuunghyang news posted this article for "fan traffic" lol

Whether it's exegerrated or not it seems the information is base on some type of data.

If this is true then it means Exo will bring 32 billion and twice will bring 9.3 billion, seventeen will bring 16 billion in economic growth etc... all of these are based off sales when compared to BTS sales just as away of comparing and measure their "influence". it's hard to believe something of this giant magnitude, when in reality Kpop as a whole doesn't even bring to a tenth of the Kyuunghyang article stated. BTW people think I mean hate by these posts, but I'm seriously just questioning the legitimacy of these journalist.

Maybe you don't realise how time works, but 10 years is quit a long period of time to rack up economic income

You realise it's a lot more than album sales right? And concerts are a HUGE part of it as well? Same with merch and all sorts of other factors, so no EXO won't be getting those numbers, and Seventeen won't either, nor will Twice

It's more then just album sales that BTS is doing for Korea's economy.

I guess you haven't been keeping up. There's has been so many threads this year and last year about BTS and their impact on the economy from so many media outlets and economist. Almost every brand they've worked with and/or BTS have mentioned in passing, has talk about the extensive impact BTS have had on them.

(Way to many reports to post) Here are just a few:

BTS has helped the South Korean: Economy(jobs), Auto industry, Movie industry, Tourism, Consumerism, Gaming Industry, Banks & Public Transportation

EXO and TWICE don't compare to BTS economic impact which is why economist are not talking about them right now. However the government is planning on harnessing the entire Kpop industry soon. I guess, BTS finally made them realize they want more control.

"During the press meeting in Paris, Park also said he plans to establish a government control tower in charge of harnessing hallyu, or the Korean Wave, as a growth engine in the manufacturing and service industries.

"It is critical to connect hallyu with exports, the manufacturing and service industries ... for this task, it is important to set up a cooperation system between government agencies," he said, adding that the control tower, tentatively named "hallyu promotion team," may be launched within this year under the culture ministry." https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20191120008000315

BTS is no longer just some Korean boy group, right now.

They're an entire brand of their own.

This is why everyone wants to work with them and/or have the permission to use their "name".

Put "BTS" on any product and it will sale.

The power they hold is crazy. It's probably hard for the members themselves to fully grasp how much they have. (I'm sure Bighit knows tho)

So much that Bighit had to create a department just for legal reasons. So many people using BTS brand to make hundreds and millions.

who said they won't promote if one of them is serving in the military? they probably won't enlist same date, having different ages.

No matter how much BTS deserves an exemption they would only get one if the companies who were in working for it (using bts as a scapegoat) could get the same for their groups.
