Maybe.

Mamamoo, Red Velvet and Lovelyz are pretty much about to outlive  a quite few major 2nd gen girl groups. 2NE1, Secret, Miss A, After School and it doesn't look they're gonna slow down anytime soon.

BUT I won't jinx it just yet, if we've learned anything in the past year with IKON or Monsta X, it's that shit can go really bad in the blink of an eye, and that can easily happen with girl groups too.

Honestly, at this point, Mamamoo is the only girl group I feel 100% comfortable saying they'll last long.

Although many girl groups have disbanded....I want to say, Yes(?) The lifespan for boy groups are longer, so I think it's probably the same for girl groups.

It all depends on how the company manage them and the expectations of the individual members...

1. Continuing to build and strengthen the fandom. Being able to tour at least in Asia is a sign the group can rely on the fandom to remain active. Twice, SNSD, are a few examples of girl groups. OR 2. Building their own individual fandoms. Solo activities or units keep them busy. That way the group don't necessarily have to disband soon.  For some idols being in a idol group is just a stepping stone. A way to get their foot in the entertainment industry.

I can only pray that Mamamoo will last long in this industry.

My only worry with MAMAMOO is their company.

They've invested in 3 boy groups now? I understand the company not wanting to rely on MAMAMOO alone. They want more money. Money can be used to invest. Hopefully at least one of these groups will be relatively successful.

Otherwise MAMAMOO might not last long with their current company.

Well, time can only tell. But even if that happens, I predict that they'll change companies like Brown Eyed Girls but still together as four.

agree, which is why i mentioned "current" company

it's just when idol groups leave the company they've been at for so long...things starts to slow down sometimes

being together and mostly inactive is not an ideal situation  :(((

There was way more girl groups with notable success in 2nd gen, so when the groups trajectory started slowing down then disbanding it was more noticeable. About the same 4 girl groups(Twice,RV,BP,MMO) have dominated 3rd gen for years with everyone else struggling. I don't think the overall lifespans of ggs will be much different. A select few girl groups renewing their contracts after 7 years(TW,RV, and MMO at this point), with the rest slowing down in their last few years before disbanding.

edit: I think the only thing that will be different is that 3rd gen (at this point in time) is more consistent with their comebacks. Plenty of 2nd gen girls groups had the 1 comeback a year curse, or even longer waits between eras as they got older. 3rd gen is still in full force with 2/3 comebacks a year.
