[knetizen] Korean artists who attracted the most spectators in Japan in 2019

bye-bye

TWICE, the boy group who doesn’t go to military serviceㄷㄷ

And your point? Look at TVXQ, Suju and others still active, able to tour and more. While the girl groups of their generation?....

In general, I find it so weird that Korean fanboys love to joke like this. They do it all the time.🙃

BTS and TVXQ almost have similar rates currently.

It's crazy how popular BTS are in Japan. They didn't have to push as hard in Japan for fans.

It will be interesting to see what these two next tour will look like.

Nissan Stadium would of made the difference for BTS probably

edit: I don't think Bighit will let BTS do to more then 20 concerts in Japan, since they don't have to rely on that market alone to make money right now..

  1. TVXQ (571K / 11 shows)

TVXQ is always the wall. The fact they can do 3 consecutive days at Nissan stadium as well, really unbeatable.

"There are only 2 people in TVXQ and no Japanese members. How are they so famous?"

Because they worked hard from the bottom starting with 50 fans at debut. Over the years, they promoted like local artists there without cutting corners nor were given special treatment and they spoke Japanese. They were very likeable and respectful that's why Japanese of all ages like and know them.

6. Taemin (226K / 17 shows)

Taemin alone having that many concert attendees is also very impressive. He started from the bottom from hall and worked his way up big arenas. He's rising and trending alot with Shabekuri007 appearance, Anan magazines and released Photobook. Hopefully bigger and better things for him next year. Tokyo Dome next, let's go!

TVXQ history is amazing. It's admirable how hard they worked to break barriers and help set the foundation for future generations.

At the same time, nowadays a group do not have to go the same route as them. As a long-term Kpop fan, I do understand that the Japanese market is picky. They want Kpop idols to convert and adapt to their Japanese ways. However over time newer generations of Japanese Kpop fans are becoming more and more accepting of Kpop groups for being themselves. We can see Korean-language album sales are increasing too.

If Japanese fans want to support a artist just because they like the Korean songs (or Japanese versions), concepts and just like you as group, then that's perfectly fine too. I find that even more impressive.

So I disagree with your statement of cutting corners and/or you putting the Japanese market on such a high pedestal compared to other markets. All Kpop idols work hard in their careers. A artist can be popular globally with their own music and culture. Western artist do it all the time. The whole converting and adapting to Japan mindset is outdated.

TVXQ will most likely stay a wall because no one currently in this generation is competing with them. Basically, It's not necessary to focus all one's attention in Japan anymore. However Twice might be able to reach some of their records since Japan is their main foreign market.

Hypothetically speaking - If BTS is able to do Nissan Stadium soon, it will be due to their hard work too.

Not to put down the others, iKON and SVT did very well too, but for comparison purpose to put things into perspective:

                   [  5. iKON (251K / 44 shows                            6. Taemin(226K / 17 shows) ]

Taemin, a soloist with (17 shows) - even  less than half amount of shows of iKON's (44 shows) managed to attract around the similar number of spectators (both around the 220k-250k range). With 1 or 2 more shows, he'd easily top them. That's no joke for Taemin alone to pull it off and if you still downplay the obvious testament of SHINee/SHINee member's selling power and popularity then idk what to tell you, probably intentional ignorance with irrational jealousy might be it. In SM, he's 2nd (behind TVXQ) this year, (which otherwise would usually be SHINee before hiatus), a solo idol, not a group. Not EXO, not NCT, not SJ and none of their sub-units. So, imagine that. Keep a lookout once he grasps those Domes.

[    3. Seventeen (445K / 29 shows)
        4. TWICE (399K / 16 shows)        ]

Twice, a girlgroup with (16 shows) around less than half shows of SVT (29 shows) is getting around 400k spectators which is only 45-46k less than SVT's. If Twice had 1 or 2 more Dome shows, they'd easily attract the same numbers or surpass SVT. A kpop gg with this selling power that only top bg's have and beating most other boygroups at that, is highly impressive. I believe this is the highest record for a Kpop gg. Who knows they'll prolly get a Nissan std for their 10th anniversary or even before that.

Twice numbers are impressive, specially considering other companies haven't figure out how to market their girl groups as successfully...and/or don't care about Japan until it's to late. We can't ignore the three Japanese members in the group too tho. It's a big reason why Japan is one of their main markets too. With the tension between Korean Japan it's why they're more "accepted".  In general, it's beneficial. I agree, about Nissan. I suspect for a group of their nature, that's a goal for Twice. And they'll be able to reach it if JYPE don't screw up the management.

Also about the whole 1-2 member thing being mentioned here...that's great. It's admirable. But I'm also not going to act like it's impossible to do.

Japanese fans are loyal. Probably the most loyal out of all fandoms. For starters, TVXQ as mentioned was a very much respected group in Japan. Any other fandom would have dropped the group after the split (which most fans have which is why they mainly focus on Japan to make money). So cutting down to 2 members, it's not that hard to believe that TVXQ would continue be successful in Japan. Especially when the two of them continue to work hard in Japan. Also SM management, brand and resources is a contributor too (look at JYJ they've done well but haven't been able to reach the same touring power)

Unpopular opinion: I feel the majority of the groups on this list could take their top five popular in Japan members, and cut them down to any two or take the most popular member and make them a soloist. Working hard would eventually pay off tour-wise in Japan too. At least Taemin level. To reach TVXQ level would take a whole lot more work and focus. Although it's not impossible. That's the power of Japan's fandom culture.
