They really snapped this year in every category. Album and artist of the year need no explanation and they are a strong contender for SOTY too.

Imagine them winning all 3 in one night, legendaric. A sweeping. I want to SEE IT!

Can't wait for awards season and the iconic performances they will serve

I honestly don’t understand how kpoppies can with good conscience say BTS doesn’t deserve all three of them.

They have the stats to prove that they do, so instead of focusing on BTS and feeling like you’re oh so clever, because you left a clown for someone, focus on your group and like buy their damn album.

I disagree only because I feel like they haven't done much this year outside of their own zone of reference (being K-Pop). While their numbers are truly impressive, I feel like this year has been lackluster for all of K-Pop in general. I honestly couldn't tell you who should win based on sales, but in terms of AOTY, I think Eyedi put out great music consistently this year. It's too bad both her songs were singles though. I also thought IDLE really did well, Uh Oh was refreshing for K-Pop, and their growth throughout Queendom finalized with Lion really showed a lot of charisma and potential. Chungha has also been pretty solid. I don't even think I can choose a winner for any of the categories. But if it's SOTY, mine definitely is this:

As for album of the year... couldn't tell you because no albums stood out to me all that much.

I mean, neither has Gidle or Chungha..And Eyedi has pretty much stuck to her zone also..I really don't see the issue of a artist sticking to their genre tho, so I'm sort of confuse by your statement lol

Anways - 'Artist of the Year' includes more then just music. It's also impact. The Korean artist with the most impact this year is easily BTS. Economically, politically, globally...basically in almost every area. Which is why they're winning so many national polls and surveys by large margins.

Sales wise - Physically, BTS is top worldwide. Digitally, Gidle and Eyedi do not compare to BTS. And Chungha barely.

BTS's BWL is doing everything that other Kpop SOTY from the past have done. And more. So it make sense BWL is a popular pick.

As I said, I'm not really here to argue traditional sales. Eyedi isn't even nominated, so that's not really much of a realistic statement on my part, simply my favorite song of the year (SOTY). Her zone of reference is also K-Pop, and while her music isn't revolutionary, it has its own trademark which made it stand out from all the other recommendations I heard on Spotify this year. Subjective opinion, but it seems others also like her dark retro style. Chungha I mentioned because she (along with Sunmi who didn't cross my mind previously) capitalized on the diva persona they set up in previous years. Personally I think Chungha did it more successively than Sunmi because her sound was more diversified. The music wasn't exactly all that different (I'd say Sunmi is moreso her own sound), but her as a performer stands out (in a good way!).

As for IDLE, Uh Oh is actually pretty out of the box for Korea and idol music*, and IDLE are the only active gg aside from BEG who are producing, writing and directing their art. I think that's quite a feat in itself, especially if you consider they delved into so many different sounds this year, from not the typical go-to Latin sound (again something PD from Producer Reacts has pointed out) to almost the operatic darkness of Lion.

*Producer Reacts touches on some of the nuances of the music as well as the video, and as a New Yorker I was pleasantly surprised by it myself.

BTS will undoubtedly have the impact, but I feel it's been an empty year, so that feat isn't as bombastic as say previous years (like 2016 where BS&T/Wings stood out so vastly from other music released that year which also left an impact).

Yea your opinion is subjective, and bias as you mentioned. Basically you like the artists you've listed songs more then BTS - which is the main reason for them being SOTY.

In my opinion, Sunmi, Chungha and Gidle are doing typical pop stuff. Yea it's refreshing this year, but it's still in the pop realm.

Nonetheless - Often in Korea the SOTY isn't the one that stands out musically. Which is why BTS didn't win for BST/WIngs. It's usually the MOST popular and catchiest song with Koreans. "Oh my my my"

BTS can't help this year was slow for everyone else. Other artist being active or not does not discredit everything BTS have done this year 💜

If BWL don't win, then maybe Chungha, ITZY, Twice or digital monsters (OSTs, coffee shop music and ballads)...mostly base on sales...

Just curious but why is it the year that BTS' title track inarguably is the best performing song (from Idol groups, who typically win soty even though soloists and ost's outperform) now SUDDENLY charts, sales, and impact no longer matter. I will never forget the grief the rest of the k-fandoms gave us for Spring Day winning soty at MMA 2017, they were ALL about charts, sales, and impact back then fadsklfjasdfk

The bolded: to me they did nothing another group couldn't do musically this year. At least from BWL alone. So my point stands, everyone's bar was pretty low this year for me. The artists I mentioned were a bit or a lot above it.

I don't stan Chungha or Sunmi. I simply found their work and artistry to be unique in the realm of K-Pop, and more notable this year than BTS. I never said I liked them more than I did BTS, though. You can probably look through my past comments on OH and find more defending BTS than any talking about those two, lol For me, it is the music that comes first.

As for IDLE, I already mentioned they aren't doing typical K-pop stuff: late 90s-mid-2000s hip hop from NY, and not your typical Latin-inspired track, but it seems like you want to ignore the music genre they've explored because I said they've done something more unique than your fav this year... give credit where it is due, that's all. Uh-Oh is hip-hop. No other group has done this specific sound. EXID's Lady from a few years ago was more retro 90s, but not this sound.

IDC who the SOTY is according to industry professionals, or through sales, I stated my opinion musically, as I made that clear in my first post but you choose to keep bringing up sales for whatever reason.

Yeah they deserve it with bwl but let's be honest Fancy is the better song.

I like both Fancy and BWL...actually there a few other idols songs I like this year too

I mean, most idols can do what other idols do. They cover each other all the time. It's just pop music. Majority of the previous SOTYs, could easily been someone else song.

I didn't say you like "them" more, I said you like their "songs" more this year. There's a difference.

I didn't ignore anything. I clearly said in my response to you that the artist you listed are  "refreshing" this year but it's still in the realms of "pop" music. Also mentioned that standing out musically is not necessarily always SOTY.  So it looks more like you're ignoring everything I've said lol

Yes, I know you don't care. Again, I've stated since the beginning your opinion, is just your opinion. I read it and already said, what I had to say about it earlier.

Anyways your opinion not very realistic if we're basing SOTY on previous years. But you already know that, right.

a. " Basically you like the artists you've listed songs more then BTS - which is the main reason for them being SOTY." Yes you did. If you want to rephrase your statement, you are free to do so. But you said what you said, so don't backtrack on it now because I called you out for it.

b. I addressed in all my posts, since the very first one "I honestly couldn't tell you who should win based on sales", that I was talking about my own personal taste, not sales. I made that very clear. You chose to pursue a specific narrative, and are now gas-lighting me.

c. So you know it's my opinion but continue to bring in sales anyway. Lol

d. I already addressed that it was hypothetical in what I liked (I mentioned Eyedi wasn't even nominated). So of course I already know that. Thanks for the talk-down ad hominen though.

No idols have done anything close to Uh Oh, while there are variations of BWL present in K-Pop already. That's the difference between the two, whether you like it or not.

It seems like you've run out of anything actually constructive to say, so I shall no longer be posting on this thread regarding this issue.

I talked about sales once because you said didn't know about them. So I gave a brief explanation.

Side note: Just because as song is out of the box doesn't make it good. I for one have seen many Gidle fans  say that Uh Oh is one of their least favorite song from the group.

I probably wouldn't have initially responded to you, but the part that I bold in my first reply to you, is the reason I did. It didn't make sense to me, so I wanted to get your opinion.

Anyways, have a good day.

Isnt it funny that last year everyone agree that LS is the right winner of SOTY based on stats alone but now bcs its BTS suddenly its arguable and stats doesnt matter 🙃😅

True

I remember some people calling LS boring, generic or whatever, but they still admitted that it was SOTY.

However since it's BTS, suddenly everyone is a music critic...🙃
