When is the best time to book a flight?

Like how far in advance should I book my flight for the best deal? I am planning a trip next year to Japan in October and this is my first time flying that far out (I'm from the U.S.)

The info I've found on Google has given me conflicting information so I am turning to you, my fellow OHers. I've seen 4 months to 51 days.

Any help given would be greatly appreciated and receive a gold star

Yeah I'd say 4-1 months in advance is the best timing to book a flight based on what regular travelers say (not exactly sure for a specific date), you might constantly check the prices as well to track the price changes and subscribe to the airlines to receive posible discounts and promotions.

4-6 months in advance sounds good for overseas travel. Don't wait until the last minute.

ts for March, prices were about €450, the cheapest I've seen for a round trip to Japan.

I'd say 6 months is safe.

I've seen some sites say I'd get a crappy deal if I book too far in advance (was thinking of a Black Friday deal since some airlines will let me book up to a year in advance) so I was starting to have doubts, but now I'm good

Thank you guys!

Do you do it directly with the airline or a 3rd party site like Expedia?

Sometimes with the airline, sometimes with 3rd party site. Whenever there are very good offers that stipulate that I have to book months in advance.
