Haven't seen it yet. But the franchise is REALLY popular, I watched the donghua and the story is quite good.

Synopsis

The pugilist world is ruled by the powerful Wen sect, which dominates over the smaller Lan, Jiang, Nie and Jin sect. The carefree Wei Wuxian becomes fast friends with the righteous Lan Wangji, and during their adventures, the pair find out that the head of the Wen sect is the evil mastermind behind a series of plots that would wreak havoc upon the lands.

Wei Wuxian’s attempts to protect the innocent members of the Wen sect from unfair persecution leads to disaster, and he goes missing in the process. Wei Wuxian reappears sixteen years later, and works together with Lan Wangji to solve a series of murder mysteries, eventually finding and defeating the true culprit.

I have never managed to get through a single K-drama but I absolutely loved this. The plot itself and the characters are really good IMO, even if the actual budget and direction can't always do them justice. Some of the action scenes look silly, some scenes drag on way too long but in general it's really well done. I was also really impressed by the acting.

But the main thing for me was just how every character really served a purpose and had their own journey and their own motivation and it all tied together. They weren't just bit players in the main character's story or had some absurd unnecessary side plots, everything worked towards the theme of the show. There's no moral absolutes either, characters where neither is a bad person may find themselves on opposite sides because of different priorities.

Main plot is in the past the fight of the smaller clans against the Wens and then main character Wei Wuxian's attitude of straightforwardness, mischief and justice without caring about diplomacy and so on landing him in trouble and making him a scapegoat for the evildoings of others, while tragedy happens to almost everyone involved. He dies and is resurrected 16 years later where he tries to get to the bottom of what really happened with the help of his former friend/rival/something Lan Wangji the only one who's never thought of him as the enemy. The flashback is like 30 episodes long, so it's just as much the main plot as the 16-years-later storyline.

The donghua is the chinese anime, it's called Mo Dao Zu Shi or "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" in english. The original is the light novel I think, but there is also a manhua (chinese manga) and an audio drama so you can choose which format you prefer. Lol

The Untamed is my favorite Cdrama hands down, not that I watch a lot. Actually, it's one of my all time favorite drama. Story is great and the acting amazing. I'm so wowed by Xiao Zhan tbh. Soundtrack is good and let's be honest here, this drama is choked full of eye candies. Some parts a bit draggy though.

I'd recommend the original novel. You can get the whole story, including what their relationship supposed to be (the main characters actually become a couple).

I wish they would release an uncensored version for this side of the world. Then I'd actually watch it.

Once upon a time when I heard they are stripping all the BL elements from the live action, I wished Netflix to produce it like they did for Kingdom which is Korean production but funded by Netflix money. Of course that was before I learned Tencent owns the IP and all adaptation rights.

Honestly I had a lot of reservations about the live action but I am glad I gave it a chance. Although there is no romance, the essence of the WangXian relationship is there. The casting was top notch. I wasn’t sure Wang Yibo was pretty enough to play Lang WangJi but oh boy did I have to eat my own words.

I didn't read the novel. Though I could because I am Chinese but it's still kinda tedious for me. Haha. Not so interested in translated versions.

I knew about the removal of BL elements before I watched so didn't have very high expectations. But truthfully, the didn't make their relationship that subtle. And it is kind of funny when you see a typical 'romantic' scene gets deflected. I'm actually ok with that.

Oh yes. All the novel fans went in with low expectations so it was a surprise to everyone how unsubtle the WangXian relationship was portrayed. They even added scenes to build up their relationship. Everyone was like, it’s gayer than the donghua! 😂
