Idk, I think it'd be better if someone objective would get to make this decision.

Someone objective will be making this decision Lol. As a Korean citizen I  had to serve in the military. This decision was made for me by the government.  As for BTS? the same thing will happen with them if they serve or get exempt that decision will be made by lawmakers who lobby a bill to be passed than the bill's interpretation passed down to the military man power administration. This branch governs who will and who won't serve. If the general of the rok says he doesn't need bts then they won't serve that's about as objective as you can get

It was a comment about army making the decision, when it's their fandom

they've stated that they'll serve anyway.

"They" have not.

BTS is remaining quiet about this, as they should

The last popular idol to publicly say he would serve and didn't was kicked out of Korea. Of course, BTS situation wouldn't be as drastic...

Why are you making this about BTS? Can you not read or something? Neither my comment, the news nor the politicians talk about exempting BTS exclusively. The entire discussion is about revising the general exemption laws to include modern arts and industries too. With the looming economic crisis, it would not be surprising if the government wants to rely on their booming music industry as one of their main exports and tourism trades. In fact, it's probably one of the best/easiest solutions they've got on their hands right now. Revising the exemption rules to include all idols, soloists, bands (maybe even actors) who have an economic impact of a certain amount and over, would help boost the industry and the national economy.

And no, the reason those musicians, athletes and dancers got their exemption was not bc of "national honor", but bc they help promote Korea for sponsorships, projects and tourism. Something the top actors and idols do much better in this day and age. "National honor" alone is too subjective of a criteria and doesn't actually benefit the average citizen in any way. But an inflow of money, sponsorships, tourism etc. into their national economy does.

Both of you are making great points.
