Article: "BTS army special treatment? Will be debating all sides in reflection of current times"

Source: Star News via Nate

1. [+2,606, -272] I'm a BTS fan. I would personally like it if they were granted exemptions and were able to promote without any periods of hiatus, but as a fan, I want them to serve proudly. I know that if they set precedence for a new military exemption for people in the arts, any future issue that arises with this exemption will have BTS' name dragged around since they set the precedent for it. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't BTS setting the precedent for it but I don't want this new exemption to be set for BTS...

2. [+2,317, -227] As someone who served in '12, I don't have a problem with BTS not serving, especially if they're famous enough to be changing laws in other countries ㅋㅋ I'm just wondering what the standards will be for this new exemption. There are already so many celebrities corrupting the system, I'm scared that celebrities without any influence or skills will be granted the exemption too ㅋㅋ

3. [+1,815, -543] What is there to debate?? At all?? Are these guys not Korean men? Why should they be above the law?

4. [+133, -86] If this is based on bringing honor to our country, then they've done more than any athlete has

5. [+114, -34] I'm a BTS fan and I acknowledge that they're doing so much for the country but I don't think it's fair that they be granted exemptions or special perks just because they're famous celebrities...

6. [+104, -11] Just do it by the rules, send them to serve... Who knows what will happen later? What if we grant a bunch of people exemptions and something happens later??

7. [+96, -8] BTS has always said that they will serve when it's their time to serve. They've never once even talked about being granted exemptions. I don't know why BTS keeps getting dragged into all these army discussions. Please just leave them alone.

8. [+60, -3] The exemption would make no sense. These guys are just doing what makes them money.. If we start handing out excuses like this, there'd be no end to them.

9. [+49, -6] Not this again. BTS is staying quiet, why is everyone else dragging them into the issue?

10. [+41, -5] As if, they have to serve

Sometimes I feel like knetz aren't even aware that their own enlistment law has been revised every couple years for the last decade, or that classical musicians and dancers get exempt if they win specific international competitions, or that some athletes get exempt even if they only place 2nd or 3rd in a tournament...

Objectively speaking, idols bring more money to the country. And if it's true that the Korean economy is facing a pretty big crisis in the near future, it might be worth considering making changes to the law so that it shortens, postpones or exempts the ones who bring in the most money.

https://www.knetizen.com/bts-military-service-exemption-korea-considers-military-service-exemption-for-k-pop-stars/

1. [+973, -31] Apparently, I saw an article recently that said, “We don’t consider military service exemptions for pop singers.” However, after SuperM ranked #1 on Billboard, there were a few posts that said: “We should look at it positively.” Bangtan is not the only one who will be considered and benefited. But Bangtan is always mentioned in the title of the article. Don’t hide behind Bangtan shield. And most of all, Yoon Sang Geun wrote this article.

2. [+673, -27] On March 29, the Korea Management Association (KMA) held a meeting with high-ranking officials of major agencies to discuss the situation regarding the military enlistment of pop culture artists, the timing of their enlistment and possible alternatives for military service. Officials from SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, FNC Entertainment and Jellyfish Entertainment, etc. attended the meeting. Big Hit didn’t even attend the meeting, but people kept swearing at BTS. Now, after SuperM is No. 1 with bundles, they consider it.

3. [+513, -157] Military service exemptions for BTS is no problem. It’s Korean pride.

4. [+163, -3] You ask questions like that, and you write articles like this? What’s your intention? I’m really curious.

5. [+80, -5] The kids said they will enlist. Why do you keep saying that they don’t want to enlist in the army? You’re trying to prevent military exemptions for idols with the huge Bangtan shield.

6. [+76, -5] SuperM uses bundles to reach No. 1 on Billboard. Why do you suddenly consider it positively? It’s disgusting when you pretend to consider military service exemptions for Bangtan, but Bangtan is not the only beneficiary.

7. [+67, -2] Reporter Yoon Sang Geun. Don’t write articles about BTS. You seem to have aversion to this sensitive issue. BTS is always offended when you write articles like this. We all know what you’ve done.

8. [+46, -1] Reporter Yoon Sang Geun again?? Hey, let’s write the article about your favorite agency. Bangtan is responsible for Bangtan’s work.

They are pulling this shit where big companies & government officials meet up and bighit/BTS are not involved and try to use BTS as a shield for their groups not serving. Leave them alone you assholes.

Sigh, I so want an official statement from someone on the enlistment situation, just so these sort of speculative articles will stop stirring shit every few months when the media wants a new wave of clicks.

Sigh at this sort of money worshipping capitalist mindset. Surely you have better arguments for this.

Arguments for what? It's a government, what else do you think it would care about? Especially if they're heading into an economic crisis next year. Do you think they actually care about the personal careers of the ballet dancers, athletes and classical musicians they already exempt? Or the "national honor" they bring?  Nah if they're looking to revise the laws, it'll be entirely for economic reasons.

And BTS is supposed to save Korea's economy? LOL

Clearly they do care about "national honour", which is why those classical musicians, athletes, ballet dancers etc. already got their exemption.

Why are you making this about BTS? Can you not read or something? Neither my comment, the news nor the politicians talk about exempting BTS exclusively. The entire discussion is about revising the general exemption laws to include modern arts and industries too. With the looming economic crisis, it would not be surprising if the government wants to rely on their booming music industry as one of their main exports and tourism trades. In fact, it's probably one of the best/easiest solutions they've got on their hands right now. Revising the exemption rules to include all idols, soloists, bands (maybe even actors) who have an economic impact of a certain amount and over, would help boost the industry and the national economy.

And no, the reason those musicians, athletes and dancers got their exemption was not bc of "national honor", but bc they help promote Korea for sponsorships, projects and tourism. Something the top actors and idols do much better in this day and age. "National honor" alone is too subjective of a criteria and doesn't actually benefit the average citizen in any way. But an inflow of money, sponsorships, tourism etc. into their national economy does.

they've stated that they'll serve anyway. if they do get exempt, those who try to hide behind bts right now and then try to benefit off them later on will only be criticized with things like "how come bts served but you didn't" and thats just reality.

They never said that, it was a politician who spoke in their name
