capital 855
Let me set out what I think could be the reasons behind why SME did SuperM's American promotions: A. I don't think SME or Capitol Records are so dumb they didn't know that the style of propaganda they went by eg. "Kpop Avengers" (who were they taking revenge on anyway?) or "must get Billboard No.1 with debut album" was cringy and almost impossible organically. I present the thesis: THEY WANTED TO MAKE A BIG NOISE AND SHOW SME AS THE BIG DADDY IN KPOP. Because any publicity is good publicity! SuperM's association with Marvel's well-known and big money-earning franchise got any of the searches on MCEU/superheroes/comics from commoners to pull up SuperM so at least they got their name to become recognized. Just think, would Disney who sue kindergartens for having decals of Mickey Mouse allow this without being paid off? The Billboard line told the industry they were a big company who were there to stay, make deals, be serious, do anything to make it aka they had the deep pockets and determination to play with the big boys in the music industry. So, now there is no case like Ariana Grande sniping on twitter about Kris Wu's sales by vpn! B. THEY DIDN'T WANT TO DO ORGANIC GROWTH OR BE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED! THEY WANTED A NEW MARKET WHICH WOULD BUY KPOP! - Yep, they wanted to sell Kpop (not a single group) as it is already, without changing to suit American tastes. They want new fans who will buy into the Kpop experience in totality. Which means non-story, dazzling, choreo-filled videos which are just vehicles for fans to attach to the boyband. They want new fans who love the boys (and girls in girlgroups too if this experiment succeeds) and aren't hung up on the style of music or deep-meaning lyrics. They want the gap group in every generation of girls who want a boyband to go crazy about in their teen years to be filled. They have seen a big chunk of the fanbase left by One Direction be grabbed and they want a share of that sweet obsession-money. And therefore, SME serves up SuperM i.e. a beautifully curated testing menu of the best that SME has to offer. From earlier groups to newer ones so people know SME have a history, a factory model of delivering great boygroups up in a row. For a possible fan, there's much to choose...Taemin for the dance/choreo fans, Baekhyun for vocals/ballads, Kai as the sexy/exotic heartthrob, Ten as younger Taemin plus Thai (for USA's sizeable SEA immigrant populace), Lucas as goof/jock and Chinese origin, Mark because rap and English-speaking homeboy, Taeyong for Korean visual/anime fans [yeah I'm being superficial lol]. C. DID STEVE JOBS FOLD-UP BECAUSE INITIALLY NOBODY WANTED AN IPAD? NO! It doesn't matter if for now SuperM (aka SM abbreviated so you betta remember who made them) is a loss in terms of profit. This was more than a product launch. An introduction to SME the company! A full taste of kpop culture for the unknowing. If the bait is taken and the fangirls bite potential earnings can be enormous, magestic, of the never seen in kpop before range! And if the play fails then SME can absorb that loss and just go have their groups tour like any other group like BP in US. The lure of US money (better than Japan money even) and even a small part of populace getting hooked means a magnificent new revenue source opening because the US is that big. Remember how so many groups now go to Japan? TVXQ was also a group made by SM's aces and SME gambled by sending them into a bigger, insular market. So what if Wonder Girls couldn't takeover USA once? Isn't US too big a market to not attempt multiple tries on? And, SME isn't even sending one group there to live permanently. They sent EXO/Shinee members who are stabilised in popularity, and NCT members from a grouping which has more members to carry on in the interim. NCT is successful but isn't yet a topmost group that they may lose face/position like WG when they went. D. DIVERSITY AND REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE - They put a interesting mix of NCT members - 1 English speaking (US and Canada), 1 Korean, 1 Thai (SEA) and 1 HK (China implied). It implies that SME is a Pan-Asian powerhouse group, where even First-World/Western citizens go. TLDR: I feel like seeing BTS getting attention there, SME thought that they should do full publicity for those who saw BTS and got interested in Kpop - good or bad reactions, the big splash made by SuperM gets people to know that SME is the Apple/Microsoft in kpop and that many huge boygroups are from their stable. It can lead to potential fans checking into EXO, Shinee and certainly NCT and if they like what they see SME will create a new generation of company fans in a new country. The money spent on bundles, appearances doesn't matter because possible incoming money-stream could be dwarf Japan revenue. ---------------------- OH is boring now what with hardly anyone posting discusssion topics. Let us raise engagement and 'Make OH great again'! ---------------------- Even if you haven't done any course in Marketing and just have a lot of feelings come here! 2

Most people probably do not even know the Korean company behind Super M. Bad publicity isn't always good tho. What SM/Capitol is doing is really risky. Starting right off with bad publicity...that bad image could follow them for the rest of their careers as Super M. Could turn some people away. Also stuff like this could lead to people digging more into the company. And they will find SM past. 2 1

Just Peachy 1,282
I think you give SM too much credit. They seem to never learn from their mistakes, are stuck in an outdated mindset and are completely deaf to their own consumer's wishes. They're only harming the individual groups and the members with this completely unnecessary project and all the chart scams it comes with. gojo 3,258
you made some points. still doesn't mean they didn't cheat though. we shall see what this publicity will do in the future. whether it will open up opportunities or close the doors x if it does close the doors, sm will be an embarrassment to the industry and korea

Augusto 12,977
I don't think US music industry needs SM brand new money-making cultural technologies, they have their own.
