May I ask why you chose seoul? Is it because you are good at speaking korean?

If they got in by a program they probably will have a very intensive first months of studying Korean, and mostly they can also study through English texts overall until they're good enough to go by Korean itself...

I was at Yonsei last fall so hmu if you have any questions! There’s lots to explore in Seoul but I strongly suggest you visit other cities like Busan and Gyeongju too. You can take the KTX and get there in no time. I’ve made some of my best memories in Korea while traveling outside of Seoul. Lots to see and do so reach out if you want specific recommendations.

There are loads of opportunities for internships, volunteering, extracurriculars, etc. so I’d take advantage of that if you can. I myself interned at a non-profit, volunteered with an orphanage, among other things (available for Eng speakers although knowing language def helps) and it was a really worthwhile experience. I got to experience the process of integrating myself into Korean civil society and networking with locals/expats/other foreigners. It’s easy to subsume yourself in that study abroad bubble but you gain so much more by forcing yourself out of it. Ask about these opportunities to your program staff/ local students and I’m sure they’d be glad to help you.

Nightlife is huge for college students and I personally thought it added major value to my abroad experience. Countless nights my girl friends and I would turn up at our favorite club in Hongdae, going on 4am McDonald’s runs and having a good ass time until we took the first subway home and just crashed until the afternoon haha (past midnight — also a fun time to ride bikes around). But I’ve definitely seen some shady shit and heard horror stories from friends. It can get dangerous, particularly for women. Be careful and always travel with people you know and trust. I know some friends who didn’t purchase a SIM card and got away with using public WiFi the whole time but I strongly discourage that. Establish emergency contacts. Have fun but stay safe!

I have a lot of specific recommendations but I can answer those questions via DM if you are curious. :) Best of luck and safe travels!
