Uh actually Milli Vanilli faked their voices even in studio recordings it was actually two different people singing instead of the actual duo. Same with the lead vocalist of Boney M.

Lipsyncing live has never been a problem as long as you got talent to back it up.

Most singers get flack for lipsyncing because they're no actual singer perfomers: like a rapper lipsyncing or simply just a vocalist like Adele is completely unnecessary compared to singer-dancer-performers like SuperM or any kpop dance group.

In the mid 80s: When Billie Jean just got dropped, MJ used to lipsync Billie Jean when he danced because he was scared of his voice cracking during the higher notes.

Example: Motown 25

But the rest of the performance medley of Motown 25 he sang live. And as the years went he got more confident he started dancing and singing live to that song and other choreo heavy songs.

And clearly its no problem for Baekhyun and Kai to sing/rap live while dancing.

So them lipsyncing in some concerts, or first week recordings of music shows is no problem. As long as They're not lipsyncing because the they can't sing live: and they're lipsyncing to preserve their voice. Its ok. Like many professional singers and performers do. Every professional singer performer knows when it's necessary to lipsync on live performances and when not to.

but we don't know SuperM, they're a new group trying to make an impact, we don't know their talent.
its forgivable when MJ did it at MT25 and Beyonce at the inauguration, and Beyonce still 'defended' herself a week
later by singing the national anthem at the Spuer Bowl press conference just to shut people up.
its forgivable cause we already know. being the new kid in town and lip syncing kinda turns you into Ashley Simpson.
or Selena Gomez.

And never forget how everyone mocked Ashlee Simpson for it. Britney Spears always got dragged for lipsyncing.

remember last year it was a major headline that Britney DIDN'T lip sync
for a bit during her vegas show. albeit breifly, still she made a point.
i honestly think Brit is the only one who can get away with publicly
lip syncing. we just want the girl to be okay. just keep staying healthy
and bright and living your life Britney. 😔 work bitch.

Except it doesn't, not in this day and age where mainstream artists barely have any talent at all.

We aren't stuck in the 2000s lmao. Ashlee didn't get hate just for lipsinging the performance

This is why she got hate and essentially black listed. Its not of her lipsync it's basically the fact that almost every single time she performed she didn't put any energy into it and obviously lipsynced. Ex. her halftime performance.

And Beyonce gets hate for everything by the white mainstream media and tabloids, so using her as an example isn't wise. Beyonce has showed her entire career that she doesn't need lipsync and her singing live gets labeled as lipsync by the media when the whole inauguration thing wasn't even that big of a deal.

She said she sang along with a pre recorderd track which is totally different than stating she said she lip sync. Her mic was lowered. She never really lip sang so it wasnt that big of a deal.

Her voice echoed right around the timestamp, it only does that when you sing along live to a pre recorded song. Not when it's purely lip sung.

But anyways we are talking about lipsyncing today. Literally half of the mainstream pop artists you know today can't hold a note even while sitting down.

Nowadays social media and streaming has allowed people with barely any talent gain fame. Back then you had to have a lot of talent and/or extremely good looks.

So granted back then lipsyncing was super taboo (compared to today) to do during award shows or tv performances, unless you had status to shield that. But it's fact that almost 60 percent of singer from the 90s to early 2000s used to lipsync during their concerts and private shows. But it wasn't as severe as it is today, the reason why lipsinging isn't is because it's basically normalized.

SuperM is a group catered to western KPOP stans so yes, we know their talents. It's not like their showcase was aired on MTV or something.

Also Selena was never looked as an actual artist, so people hated her regardless for being a former disney star.
