Samsung to Give Away 1 Million Copies of Jay-Z’s New Album

As the Miami Heat faced off against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA finals Sunday night, a curious TV ad aired near the end of the second quarter featuring rap star Jay-Z in a studio, riffing with a cast of characters including producer Rick Rubin and artist Pharrell Williams. At one point, a member of the posse is shown taking notes on a tablet device. More than two minutes into the three-minute video Samsung ElectronicsCo. 005930.SE -0.22%’s tagline flashes across the screen: “The Next Big Thing.â€

The connection: Samsung has purchased 1 million copies of Jay-Z’s coming album, entitled “Magna Carta Holy Grail,†slated for release July 4, and plans to give them to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users for free – 72 hours ahead of the release. The users are to receive the music through an app they’ll receive later this month. (Recipients won’t be able to share it until the official release date.)

Samsung paid $5 apiece for the albums, according to a person familiar with the matter. It wasn’t immediately clear if Nielsen SoundScan will count Samsung’s purchases in its sales tallies.

The partnership could help Samsung compete with Apple Inc. AAPL -1.38%, which recently announced the launch of iTunes Radio – an online radio service bundled onto Apple devices that promises to offer listeners access to certain tracks before they’re available elsewhere.

For Jay-Z, the deal is a precious advertising opportunity and gives him $5 million in sales before the album is even released. The agreement signals the increasing importance of corporate sponsors to the music industry, which has seen sales tank over the past decade.

Jay-Z hinted at the partnership on Twitter two days ago with a photo of a Samsung smartphone displaying text telling fans to “tune in†to the game.

Neither Samsung nor Jay-Z could immediately be reached for comment.

i checked, only s3, s4 and note 2

Lame but oh well. It will probably leak earlier than the Samsung release and if not it will the hour it's released on there.

I hope they don't count these as sales and he/his team gets pissed off because they tried it.

If it's free i'm pretty sure it's impossible to get them counted.

They can't because it's being sold for less than $5 in its debut week. He could try to get it included in RIAA, but I'm pretty sure RIAA doesn't count business deals and free sales, either. He's basically putting a flop in his discography for the sake of a $5 million paycheck.

I hope Galaxy Note 8.0 falls under this.

But is Jay-Z's upcoming release a mixtape or album? I doubt it's the latter tbh.

It's an album.

They're not really free since Samsung paid for them.

GaGa's 99 cent copies of Born This Way from Amazon were counted. So were the free copies of Madonna's MDNA that were included with the tickets for her tour.

Madonna's albums were bundled with the tickets. People were paying between $50-$350 per album. Gaga's album was bundled with $20 for the cost of 99 cents. Afterwards, Billboard put in this rule: http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1160372/billboard-pricing-policy-effective-november-21-2011 because they were tired of people BSing their album sales. While I don't think Madonna's albums deserved to be counted, people were paying more than premium prices for them. Gaga's album came for free with a huge amount of space, much like Jay-Z's album will. I find it hard to believe Billboard would count his albums.

It's all the same.

Jay-Z's album is free and so was Lady Gaga's. Madonna's was bundling, where she jacked up the prices of her tickets so she could pretend she was giving her fans a deal with the album bundle. She did not have a third party buying tons of her albums and it's supposed to be against the law for a company to buy massive amounts of an album in order to inflate sales. Then again, payola used to be illegal and now radio does daily to weekly deals.

It's like when you look at Britney's "Ooh La La" single. When you buy it, it comes with GRL's song, too. While people are technically buying both, the intent of the consumer is for "Ooh La La" and so Nielsen Soundscan only counts those sales.

Plus, Nielsen Soundscan has never taken kindly to companies buying albums. They don't even count Sony BMG sales, and those generally sold for over $5.

Like I said, it's all the same. People were buying Madonna tickets, not an album, so the albums were free.

She jacked up her prices by like a $1 per ticket so in reality, everybody was paying for albums, she just didn't give them to everybody. I'm more shocked than anything that she sold so many tickets, yet only 185,000 people decided to take the album LOL

Billboard (kind of) explains their reasoning here: http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1098093/editors-note-what-role-did-bundling-and-exclusives-play-in-madonna-and

Madonna's a nostalgia act so I'm not surprised she sold so many tickets. People there to see Like A Virgin and Vogue, not Give Me All Your Loving and Celebration.
