On May 30, Sports Chosun reported that according to multiple industry sources, D.O. will be enlisting as an active duty soldier on July 1. The EXO member, who was born in 1993, still has time left before the deadline for his required enlistment. According to the current military service law, D.O. can defer his military enlistment for a total of five times and just has to enlist by 2021, when he is 28 years old. However, now that the military enlistment process has started for EXO with Xiumin’s recent enlistment, D.O. has expressed his will to complete his military duties as soon as possible. According to the report, after discussing with SM Entertainment and the EXO members, D.O. has decided to enter the military on active duty and will be the second EXO member to enlist following Xiumin. This is clearly a situation of "Oh well, I ain't doing nothing, might as well enlist". His enlistment aligns with the "Along With the Gods" movies. The franchise is one of the biggest in Korea, he starred in the last film and is confirmed for the next film, they start shooting in 2021 when he gets out, probably a factor in his enlistment. This is clearly a situation of "Oh well, I ain't doing nothing, might as well enlist". I doubt he enlisted just because he wasn't given work. He seemed to have thought it through and he is actually doing a smart move. He has a stable acting career but he still hasn't reached his peak so it is smarter to enlist now that way he wouldn't have to enlist while on the summum. With 1 month left, i do feel disappointed that we aren't getting any new drama or movie before he is enlisting in the army. I get that he might play a lead in AWTG so he's enlisting at this time but people need to stop defending that shit piece of company. They did nothing for him since he hit it big with 100DMP. Hit movies and drama but yet no promotion from SM at all and they have not allowed him to do any solo CFs etc. Anyone especially an idol who had had as much success and praise for their acting projects would have been blown up by their agencies. Let's not get started on the on the lack of singing activities despite being a MAIN VOCAL when he's always said he wants to do music. No solo songs ever, no sm stations or OST in the last 3 years - even when he is offered OSTs for his projects SM either rejected or dealt off to another member. They are rumoured to have about 2-3 years on their contract, so rather than wait and put up with more shitty management then enlist - it is so much smarter to enlist now cos by the time he comes out he won't have long left.
