Jang Ja Yeon’s Ex-Boyfriend: “I Have Never Heard Of Yoon Ji Ohâ€

May 23, 2019 by D. S.kim

The late actress Jang Ja Yeon’s ex-boyfriend has spoken up following the decision of the Ministry of Justice’s Committee of Past Affairs that no further investigation should be carried out regarding Jang Ja Yeon’s sexual abuse case.

A 39-year-old man identified as “Choi†stated that he dated Jang Ja Yeon for about a year until a month before her death in March 2009. Following her death, Choi participated in a series of questioning by the police as a testifier based on messages and call records that were exchanged between him and the actress.

On May 23, news outlet SBS funE released an interview that Choi recently participated in, during which he talked about the actress.

He stated that when Jang Ja Yeon died by suicide after telling him, “I’m sorry, I can only say that I’m sorry to you†the day before, he felt guilty for not being able to protect the actress. In addition, he shared that he did not want to mention the actress’s name in public out of respect for her family.

During the interview, Choi said, “I recently read an article about an actress who argues that she was good friends with [Jang Ja Yeon]. While hearing her say things like ‘I think [Jang Ja Yeon] was sexually abused’ and, ‘She may have been drugged,’ I thought she was crossing the line. The least I can do is prevent further defamation of [Jang] Ja Yeon.â€

Choi continued, “[Jang] Ja Yeon, who was the same age as me, had pride in herself and was bright. We met five times a week, went to each other’s houses, and I even met [Jang] Ja Yeon’s sister and brother at her house many times.â€

He added, “Around the time we broke up, [Jang] Ja Yeon was taking pills for sleep deprivation and frequently said things like, ‘I’m exhausted’ and, ‘I want to die.’ We met up and exchanged phone calls even after we broke up. When she asked, ‘Where should I die?’ I could only respond, ‘Don’t do that.’ I was shocked when I heard that she died at a location that she had previously mentioned [to me].â€

This is the first time Choi has publicly spoken up about the late actress. He continued to explain, “The [Jang] Ja Yeon that I knew would never sexually entertain anyone for money. She was better off than most people her age. She did have to immediately change into different clothes and leave for meetings with people at her company even when we were hanging out together, but [Jang] Ja Yeon considered that as part of her duty as an actress.â€

Choi elaborated, “I had taken her back home to Bundang after her meetings a few times. Other times, she texted me, ‘My manager is coming to pick me up. I’ll come to your house after the meeting.’ We exchanged simple conversations just like any other couples. I don’t remember a time our conversation was cut off for a long time. Our friends and I find it difficult to believe the statement ‘Jang Ja Yeon was high on drugs.'â€

Because they had been broken up, Choi stated that he did not know about Jang Ja Yeon’s whereabouts in the month prior to her death.

Choi shared, “Before we broke up, [Jang] Ja Yeon said that she was having a hard time because of some problems with her agency. I asked her if she needed help with finding a new agency, but she refused. [Jang] Ja Yeon had a big dream of wanting to grow as an actress. Many people who started their careers in the entertainment industry around the same time as her had already become stars, and when they took on good roles, [Jang Ja Yeon] expressed that she was upset.â€

Choi further stated, “She said that she was under a lot of pressure because she had to look for another role after ‘Boys Over Flowers.’ She was having a hard time due to sleep deprivation, and she called me and expressed her concerns while under the influence of her pills. Even then she said, ‘I love my sister and brother so much that I cannot die.'â€

While Choi said he would like to know the truth behind the death of the late actress more than anyone, he cannot trust the words of Yoon Ji Oh that are being published through news outlets.

“I couldn’t contact [Jang Ja Yeon’s family] after the funeral, but I’m sure they feel the same way I do,†continued “Choi.†“I can’t read an article if it mentions [Jang] Ja Yeon’s name because I get scared. But this person named Yoon Ji Oh, who has no idea of what was going around at the time, is making detrimental statements about Jang Ja Yeon such as [Jang Ja Yeon] being drugged and sexually abused and having to sexually entertain [figures] and by serving drinks.â€

Choi concluded, “I, as well as those who were very close to [Jang] Ja Yeon, have never heard of [Jang] Ja Yeon mentioning Yoon Ji Oh’s name before. But for Yoon Ji Oh to publish a book that mentions [Jang Ja Yeon’s] name and produce merchandise? That’s a cruel thing to do. Everyone who was close to Jang Ja Yeon and questioned as a testifier has never been threatened nor followed.â€

Jang Ja Yeon passed away in March 2009, and her death was ruled as a suicide. She is said to have left behind a final document revealing that she had been forced to sexually entertain powerful figures in the business and media industries. At the time, the police cleared about 10 names charged for sexual abuse that were mentioned in the actress’s list, and the case ended with only her agency CEO and manager being charged for assault and defamation.

The Investigative Team of Past Affairs began a reinvestigation into several suspicions surrounding her case on April 2, 2018. On May 13, the team’s final report was submitted to the Ministry of Justice’s Committee of Past Affairs.

On May 20, the Committee of Past Affairs concluded that it was difficult to confirm the existence of the final document of Jang Ja Yeon and that the lack of evidence and the statute of limitations were serious obstacles in the case to carry out further investigation.

However, the Committee of Past Affairs recommended that prosecutors reinvestigate the former CEO of Jang Ja Yeon’s agency, Kim Jong Seung, on suspicions of false testimony.

Just going to make a few points so you all can have a broad view:

1) The sexual abuse and "selling" by his CEO have been probed in the last investigation.

2) He claims that he's close to Jang's family, he also claims that "he couldn't contact them since the funeral" (10 years ago), and on top of that talk on their names.

3) People who were close to Jang: her prior manager who was trying to get her out of her shity company (was publicly uncredited, tried to "commit suicide" and finally was charged and condemned in the 2009 investigation), other actress (I'm on phone so I can't search her name) who also was trying to help Jang and was way more close to her and known a lot more (said by Yoon herself), recently tried to testify again just to have her name dirtied by a news pointing her as the one who "force Jang to commit suicide" etc etc.

4) He claimed that she wasn't in the "giving sexual favors" circle but also claim that she continually leave after changing clothes to meet important people. I don't know if he's f**" blind or just plain idiot.

5) Yoon Ji Oh has never claimed to be super close to Jang, she said Jang was a nice sunbae to her, she witness one of her assaults taking place and when she died, Yoon was so affected that went and stay in the mourning place the whole time sitting next to her family, and that's when she learnt everything that happened to Jang and saw the list and the papers she wrote before dying. Jang's ex manager also confirm that he indeed show Jang's papers to her family during the mourning and burned in front of them by their request.

And that's all, I'm just gonna leave the obvious "if she was forced to be with others men's she would not have told her boyfriend" logic to you because that's something that you're already figured out but yourselves I think.

I read a comment that the interview with the ex was conducted by SBS FunE reporter Kang. I'm also questioning the timing of this interview and what purpose does it serve since Jang Ja Yeon's case is unlikely to continue. I doubt that the ex did not know the ongoings with the case. Waiting AFTER Yoon Ji Oh left is too convenient. This whole case is suspicious.

So, is reporter Kang digging Seungri's case to bury jang ja yeon's case? I'm not saying Seungri's case is not worth to expose but like you said the timing of this interview... Maybe they use Seungri's case as a cover up to Jjy's case because they know Seungri and gang would not get caught and there is higher people who back up Seungri... But this is just my opinion

Yes, is it. She signed the website interview new.

SBS 8PM news actually tried to revive the Jang case in 2011 with the letters of Jang to a friend that were ignored during the first investigation, quite obviously trying to reopen the case. The police totally destroyed the claims and oficial reported 10 days later claiming with a lot of details that they're fake. (Personally I find the claims quite oscure and there's a few things that don't understand like SBS already have done professional check in her writing, or that they were like 230 pages supposedly faked in the 2 months by a person in prison, or like initially the letters were presented by the prosecutor (it's in the judicial reports) - and korean prosecutors are really really carefoul of what proofs forward to the judge- but the defense denied the right to add them to the proofs, etc). Long history short, SBS MORNING news report apologies and accepted the oficial rule of fakeness

Forwading years, they didn't make any serious investigation again on the case, even if since June 2018 was reopened, and only when Yoon went back to Canada and the case was deathly wounded, we can read news from them: they make a series of interviews oriented to difame Yoon allegations and obscure the case's motivations to keep opened.

This case is really complicated for reporter Kang, because it's quite obvious that there's some SBS's high-up implicated in this mess or something, and I understand that.  Also maybe she has to choose between Burning Sun's case of this one, and I understand that the first is way more important because it's imply judicial system structural manipulation and it's vital to get the focus on that to achieve some kind of "cleaning". Because if the judicial system is not inviolable, then it'll not matter how many years we keep Jang's case or similars opened, because they will never get any justice done.

So I get it, but it still hurt like hell and I would have prefered some really investigation there coming from her.

SBS's Kang was selected by the whistleblower of Jung Joungyoung's phone to report the scandal, the main source of news and investigations from the Burning Sun's case come from it. Others news channel that actually pay attention to the Jang's case and interview Yoon, have being doing interviews and intensive reports on Burning Sun's case aswell.

So, no. I don't think that Kang is actively trying to bury Jang's case with Burning Sun's case, Cholsun Ilbo in the other hand...

I don't think Kang is.

I'm interested why the ex popped up all of a sudden, when all this time there was no peep from him. Who approached who? Did he come out himself and contacted SBS or Kang or did SBS or Kang sought out to him? If Yoon Ji Oh was spreading untruths about Jang Ja Yeon's case, it would have made more sense for him to come out and dispute her claims. Why wait until now? Ex Choi is also talking on behalf of other people who were "close" to Jang Ja Yeon. Can he not speak for only himself? Why bring other people up? Is it to make his statements more weighted and credible? The way things are happening is bizarre.

When this case (Jang Ja Yeon) came back to light, I was told how things were likely to go down. I'll just say that it's pretty close to how things have been going down so far. I guess when you're from Korea or live in Korea for years, you kind of just know. As for me, I still have hope that someday the truths will come out.
